    3. Hi Jean, <I have a land transaction that happened in 1785 in Harmons Creek and then that land was resold in 1796. We will be passing through the state and are wondering which county we could stop in to try and find the records of this transaction and where? Court house or library or where and what? Our time is limited and we are anxious to see the deed books that would have more information. > You really should stop by both the Brooke Co., and Ohio Co. Courthouses to look up the land deeds. But if I was pressed for time, I would go to the Brooke Co., WV courthouse in Wellsburg and obtain copies in particular from these two (three) books: Record Book of Surveys Made in Youghogania Co., VA 1780 by William Crawford, Surveyor (one is typewritten and there is a handwritten copy as well. Get copies from both. Copy both of any deed referring to that land transaction of 1796. These books are on the top shelf, back wall in the room where all the deed, wills are kept. You'll need the ladder which is near.) These surveys have visual area maps of the deed showing number of rods to the dogwood, etc. and on and on - and sometimes a small drawing of a house, stream, etc. Also listed are land owners of adjoining property - usually close friends and in-laws as John Jr. usually married the girl next door. ;) Another must get: Ohio County Lands Pertaining to Brooke Co., VA Record Book - This book contains land deeds in Ohio Co., VA which later became Brooke Co. VA in 1797. I consider these two books some of the most interesting sources in our area. So early!!! Happy Hunting, Julia
