I'm currently working in Cairo (no, don't ask!) but my wife is in Pettorano most of the time. The best way to get there is via London Stansted airport to Pescara (cheap flights via Ryanair.com), then get the bus or taxi to Pescara centre, then train to Sulmona. Best to hire a car if you can, then it's only 40 minutes to Pettorano by autostrada. Stay at Hotel Santacroce in Sulmona, and ask for Sandi (Italian by birth, but fluent English with an American accent) who works there most evenings. Sandi knows everybody and everything in the area! She'll probably know most of your family names as well. Blame me for introducing you, and she'll probably take you to my house for a visit. Lots of good restaurants in the area, so no problems with food, but if I were you, I wouldn't eat at the hotel. If you can't get there via Pescara, it's about two hours by car from Rome Fiumicino, but at least 4 hours by train (stops at every village) and you have to go back into Rome to get the train. Any more questions, just email me and I'll try to answer. Best of luck Roy Starling
