The Painter house that Julia referred to (actually it was a Manchester house - they married into the Painters) still stands in all its splendor on Pa. Rte. 231, abt. 3 miles south of Avella, in Independence Twp., Washington Co. It was built ca. 1820, modeled after houses in the Manchesters' old home of Newport, R. I. It's still occupied by members of the Painter family. Ken Mt. Lebanon, Pa.
