    3. Can't find anything interesting to read in tonight's paper? Here are some abstracted articles from Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH's newspapers which feature Ohio Valley life in 1899-1900. (Friday, June 2, 1899 Steubenville Gazzette) MEMORIAL DAY - Fitting Ceremonies Observed in Steubenville. The annual custom of decorating the graves of soldiers was observed in Steubenville Tuesday. The weather during the afternoon was delightful and there was a good sized turnout. The Spanish American solders met in the Council chamber and marched to Fourth, near Washington and took position in the procession at the head of the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic). There were twenty-eight in all, and Rough Rider McKINLEY was one of the number taking a place as the parade started. He came from Richmond on his bicycle and was applauded as `he rode up Fourth street. The G. A. R. met at the post room and formed on Fourth near Washington, and there were 84 in line on foot. They were headed by six policemen and the G. A. R. drum corps led by Capt. SELAB. After those on foot came carriages with the aged soldiers and W. R. C. in them. They decorated 379 graves, one of them being Chas. WATKINS, the Confederate Black Horse Cavalry man, who died here. We are informed that in 1877, the first year the present G. A. R. assumed this duty, only 37 graves were decorated. (Friday, June 23, 1899 Steubenville Gazzette) $10 To The Seashore: Summer Excursion to Atlantic City via PA LINES. July 6th and 30th, August 3rd and 17th, just the time for your vacation trip, the $10 round trip excursion tickets will be sold from Steubenville to Atlantic City, Cape May and other popular seaside resorts; return limit on these tickets 15 days including date of sale. Trains run thorough City without change. For further info, please call upon or address J. M. REYNOLDS, ticket agent, Pennsylvania Line. Jas. GILL found a set of gold teeth plates in the sand at the old graveyard on South Fourth street. They are in connected by springs and are in good condition. Dentists regard them as a curiosity of over fifty years ago. The same work today would cost nearly $200. This morning Si MYERS was driving Paul CASTNER's delivery wagon up Fourth near Market and was passed by Al SHOUSE with two fire engine horses. One of the fire horses shied at a street car and started for Market street. MYER's horse started to back and pinned the horse SHOUSE was riding against a telephone pole, where in his frantic efforts to free himself, he slowed the wagon so hard a wheel broke. SHOUSE held to the other horse until the saddle girth broke and he was thrown off by the pole. Both horses were caught by bystanders. SHOUSE was not injured and neither of his horses hurt. Lightning struck the central school building at Toronto on Tuesday evening, damaging it slightly. The stack of the Minor brick works clay bank was blown down by the storm. The trestle leading to the King's creek stone quarry (an easy walk across the river in Hancock Co., WV) was considerably damaged by the heavy rain. The bronze fountain, which will supply water for man and beast is now on the site of the old stone trough put up by Mayor IRWIN years ago. While the new fountain is more artistic, it will never do more real good than the one put up by the ex-Mayor, for then there were no troughs in the city. (Friday, June 30, 1899 Steubenville Gazzette) The boating stage in the river is over for awhile at least and nearly all the boats have gone to the bank after a long and profitable season of navigation. At present (the Ohio River is) three feet seven inches and falling slowly with no prospect of a rise. The Keystone State stuck in the mud several times in getting to Pittsburg but finally with the aid of boats . . . . . there yesterday afternoon at 8 o'clock, and will remain until more water comes. The Ben Hur left Pittsburgh yesterday at noon and reached here this morning at 8 o'clock, twelve hours behind schedule time. She will proceed as far as Marietta and there tie up. No word has been received from the Virginia due up today and it is thought she will come no farther than Wheeling. His children's birth certificates give conflicting places of birth for him. One says Upshire County,(I know there is an Upshur) one says Arlington (which I know is in Upshur) and one says Parkersburg. He had at least two brothers.Benjamin was probably born around 1906,He still lived in W.Va in 1925 when his first child was born, then they moved to Stark County, Ohio. My mother thinks another brother's name was Enoch. Thanks to those who are trying to help me get past this brick wall.

They lived in Stark Co.Ohio, so I'm guessing that they probably went to W.Va. to get married. My grandfather was born in W.Va., in Upshur County. I would guess that they probably would just go somewhere just inside the state line. Hancock county would be the closest, though they could have gone to Brooke or Ohio Counties. How in the world would I locate their marriage license? I have not been able to find out who my grandfather's parents were, I was hoping their marriage license would tell me.

I am looking for any and all info on these Brooke Co Duvalls. What happened to all the brothers; where did they go???? What were the names of their wives and children? Who did the children marry? Of special interest to me is the family of Ben Duvall and Sarah Thompson. I think they might be the best bet to be parents of my Elizabeth (1803-1848) who married Robert McIntire Jr of the Buffalo Valley area of Wellsburg. I have not been able to find any information about Ben's or Sarah's death -- no will, no cemetery listing. Somewhere I have seen that Ben died the same year as Isaac--1828--but I have not come across any source for that date. So. . . I think if I collect data on all the brothers, that will give me a better idea of which brother was father of my Elizabeth. I also think that Elizabeth had a brother William who died at age 29 in 1844. He is buried in the McIntire plot next to Elizabeth and her husband in New Alexandria, Jefferson Co OH. Again, any info you have will help me figure out who my Duvall belongs to. Many Thanks and God Bless, Janet Currie

    1. Indian warfare 1773-93 a6t Weirton [Holliday's Cove] WV panhandle.
    2. HERMON B FAGLEY
    3. Allen Eckart has written a series of historical novals, that are often available even in paperback. They are reasonably accurate, and contain great footnotes for further research. His "The Frontiersman " gives a graphic account of July-Aug,1782 Col Wm Crawford's defeat. His "That Dark and Bloody River" accounts Crawford's defeat, but also other Indian warfare along the WV panhandle, where Edward Logsdon,Sr-Jr were. Dugal McQueen and George Brown[e] were adjoining neighbors at n e Westminster,mD, and John Brown and Edward Logsdon,Sr m Dugal's daughters, among others.John Sappinhton,Sr, Richard Wells,Sr,and John Baxter were Brown's sons-in-law Dugal's son, Thomas Sr,is said by someone [?] to have been killed by Indians in Nov ,1763,during Pontiac's War,in the Big Cove of mid southern,Pa,just north of Hancock,Md, Some portion of the Logsdon-Durbin-Mattingly-Sapp-Workman colony gave oaths in 1778 further west yet, neat Oldtown Md -Mt Savage,Md. Md is 1 1\2 mile wide at Hancock,Md,and WV is 6 miles wide at Harmon's Creek, Weirton-Hollidays Cove,WV. Early spring,1774,at Jousha Baker's cabin in the northern WV panhandle, the Mingo chief Logan's family was lured across the Ohio, and massacred by white men that included a Greathouse,John Sappington, and Baker's bro-in-law,Nathanial Tomlinson, and others. [ Jousha McQueen, grandson of Dugal, called Jousha Baker his "best friend" and floated to Natchez in 1780-81 with Nat Tomlinson. Chalkley's "Cronicles of the Scotch-Irish in Augusta Co,Va" has abstracts of a Va district land suit court suit re the 1773 squatting of Wm.West,Jousha McQueen, and John Sappington in Campbell's cabin at Holliday's Cove, and my George Brown,,and others, riding to their rescue. Spring,1782,after many white deaths by Indians, a whitemilitia rode from Mingo Boton into the "No Man's Zone"" between the warring tribes of Indians,in Ohio, and the white's.They rode 75-100 miles into Ohio to a village of Christian [Moravian] indians, who empty village had been used to shelter hostiles the past winter. Now reoccupied by the Christian Indians, but among them were found clothing items of whites recently killed. The Moravians were herded into ther church, and ,next am, led out,and made to kneel, and a few of the white milita walked behind them, bashing 90 plus heads. Another portionof the white militia joine a young ,white minister,at prayer while the massacre occured. Many of the same miltia, enlarged by others, joined Col Wm Crawford,in riding to defeat in late July of 1782,further west in mid-Ohio near Upper Sandusky. 1780 is the date I use for the 1st of our colony long hunting buffalo and genseng out of the 1775 Boonesboro fort in Madison Co,Ky. 1787 is the date I use for the colony moving their wifes to George Boones-Wm Hoy's fort 7 miles west of Boonesboro,Ky at Foxtown,or White Hall,Ky. Trading Hill,it was called. Foxtown is yards wst of I-75 south of Lexington,Ky,and south of the Kentucky Rivera very few miles. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. Pittsburgh(, PA) Snubbed by Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Party in 2003
    2. Julia A. (Heaton) Krutilla
    3. Did you know that: "Lewis chose Pittsburgh as the expedition's point of departure, not just for its fortuitous confluence of rivers, but because only in Pittsburgh and its environs could he find skilled workmen to build the keelboat he needed for a transcontinental voyage." City undaunted by historical snub They tried. They failed. And now, after being rebuffed by a St. Louis-based national commission, the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center http://www.pghhistory.org/ has called on some big names -- from the state House to Dan Rooney to former Gov. Tom Ridge to President Bush -- to help it stake Pittsburgh's claim as the place where the Lewis and Clark expedition began. Read more at: http://www.postgazette.com/nation/20021010lewisclarkp2.asp The Thursday, October 10, 2002 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a wonderful illustration of a keel boat on it's front page along with the headline link above. It's a shame the Lewis & Clark 2003 - http://www.lewisandclark200.org/ is overlooking the importance of Pittsburgh in this bicentennial celebration.
