Surnames: Pugh Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FCC.2ACE/801.806.823 Message Board Post: According to a letter written by my grandfather's (Thomas Jefferson Pugh b. 1890), sister Laura Edie Pugh b. 7/19, 1894, their father who was George Jackson Pugh was the great-grandson of Hugh Pugh. Also, according to her letter: "John Edie signed a land grant in Brooks Co. which Hugh Pugh purchased from William Randolph of Washington Co., Pa., in 1808. Hugh Pugh had purchased the land where Pughtown, earlier known as Fairview, W. Va., is now situated and was running an inn there before 1800. Hugh Pugh I was the grandfather of my (Laura Edie Pugh) father." George Jackson Pugh and Martha B. Anderson were married 5/14/1884 and had 6 boys and 5 girls who lived to maturity. My grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Pugh (always called Jeff) was the third oldest. You mention in your posting that David Pugh also owned land in Pughtown. Was he a brother of Hugh, or his son? I'm not absolutely positive, but I think the father of George Jackson Pugh was named Thomas Jefferson (the same as my grandfather). If you have any more information, I'd be very interested. Thank you, Linda Cook
Anyone related to the Henry family of Brooke Co? I am looking for a John Henry family who I find in court records taking in Margaret McIntire, an orphan girl. "Indenture of apprenticeship between William Thorp and Henry Henry overseer of the poor within this County to John Henry binding Margaret McIntire an orphan girl is acknowledged in Court by the parties thereto and ordered to be recorded" Any help tracking this family would be appreciated. Many Thanks, Janet Currie

From an article written in 1902 by Isaac McIntire of Muskingum Co OH, g grandson of Robert McIntire of Brooke Co(1761-1837): "In the year 1782 John McIntire, Robert McIntire, Absalom Wells, Joseph Treasure and his son, Jeremiah, with some others, located farms and settled in Brooke County, Virginia. John McIntire's farm was 'tomahawked' for four hundred acres but it really consisted of 450 acres." . . . "After the boundary had been fixed John McIntire sent to the government one cent for every acre embraced in his parcel and in return the government gave him a deed for the land. John McIntire sold the land later on to a man named Samuel Wilson because of his desire to move farther west. It was a beautiful farm and is really a historical landmark. On it were interred the remains of the first white person to be buried in that county. The body was that of a young white girl who, having gone to the spring for water, was attacked by Indians, killed and scalped. Her body was found at the base of a white oak tree and was buried where it was found. Since then a graveyard has been established there and is the known to this day as the White Girl graveyard. The tree is still standing but has been dead for several years. The members of the family of Robert McIntire, brother of John McIntire, peacefully sleep in this cemetery." I believe this cemetery is now known as the McIntire-Wilson cemetery and can be found on McCord road. Janet Currie

They also say James died there in 1856. The rest of the family left for IA in 1853 so... unless he was too sick to travel and stayed behind with married kids, we must have an incorrect death date. I'd like to know when he died and where he's buried. Eleanor moved to IA in 1853 with a wagon train of about 90 people. They stopped at Montezuma, IA for several months then moved on to Madison County. Two of her married children came all the way to Madison County with her: John Cassiday Porter and Susanna Porter Reed. Eleanor Scott Porter was born 5/1/1780 in Donegal County Ireland and died 7/2/1857. As far as I can tell she is the oldest caucasian buried in Madison County, IA. She is buried at Sayre Cemetary. The stone marking her grave is still easy to read. Rob
