I saw your message in Roots Web and was wondering if your Charles Craft had a daughter Salina (or similar). In 1850 Salina was 22 and living in Brooke County, married to Shepley Wilson with one son, William. I also noticed that you are inquiring on Arney - I have Arney's in my family, from the East, I will check and see if there is a connection. Thank you - Patti

Surnames: Young, Cooper, Pinkerton, Robison, Robinson, Buchanan, Lain, Lane, Moreland, Hayes, Miles, Moore Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FCC.2ACE/1928 Message Board Post: After fifteen years of searching for lines on this ancestor I am posting to see if other Young family’s lines may have the same legends in their family history. James Young is thought to be born in Ireland between 1715 and 1726 to Scotch heritage, when he came to Pennsylvania is not known but that his wife is Elizabeth Cooper (Couper ?) and lived in the Lancaster/Cumberland/York Counties of PA. Believe he was married before the Revolution and had several children. Legend and some written records has it that he was a Wagon Master in the Quartermaster Supply for Valley Forge, other state that he was in different battles of the Revolution but have not been able to support these facts. All facts and other leads have point to other people or no doctumation at all. The strange part is that three diverse family lines that split up about time of the Civil War had the same story and did not get back together again until the 1960's. Legend continues with this James Young dying in Brooke County, West Virginia and also in Brown County Ohio in 1826. No evidence of his death has been found at either location, no pension records has been found ei! ther. James and John were to have been the older two sons and legend has it they were in the Indian Wars of Ohio, one killed and another never heard of again. Again no evidence has supported this. Daughter Margaret Young was reported to have married a Thomas Lain / Lane in Washington County PA, have found land deeds there before 1800 but nothing farther on this line. Elizabeth Moreland Young b: 1776, moved to Mercer / Lawrence County PA and married John Pinkerton, this is know and proven but many of the descendants of this family have not been identified. Youngest son William Young also moved to Mercer / Lawrence County PA and married Mary Robison / Robinson, daughter of Samuel Robison / Robinson. Mary died young after having two sons then William married Margaret Buchanan of whose parents are unknown but believe from early settlers in the New Wilmington area of Lawrence County. They had four sons and two of them moved west to Minnesota and Ohio into Missouri. All of these know li! nes are filled with Presbyterian ministers. After much mulling over information and consulting with other there appears to be a chance that some of the family verbal history may have slipped and some of us believe there may be a chance of a missing generation between James and the group of children listed above. Elizabeth Young's middle name of Moreland is a lead that may support the theory along with some information on the Buchanan lines. Some of these families had lines that were in Virginia then migrated back to Pennsylvania after the revolution into Washington County and some then up to the Mercer / Lawrence area. Would appreciate any feedback or information on similar sounding names or stories in your family.

I had an excellent response from both lists here for my question. It looks like Wheeling won out on where to search for the land and patent records that I asked about for Samuel Strain. We have three areas to search for the originals......something to keep us busy when we pass through the area. Thanks so much for helpful and detailed information. Jean

Am planning another next year and the new information you shared may be very useful. I have some questions about what you send, so if you can write me directly at, genealogybug@comcast.net, I would appreciate it. By the way, I spent a week in Pettorano and loved every minute of it, but wish I could have made contact with a few people who understood English. I need to take someone to interpret when I go to City Hall for family history. jo-ann
Hi Jean, <I have a land transaction that happened in 1785 in Harmons Creek and then that land was resold in 1796. We will be passing through the state and are wondering which county we could stop in to try and find the records of this transaction and where? Court house or library or where and what? Our time is limited and we are anxious to see the deed books that would have more information. > You really should stop by both the Brooke Co., and Ohio Co. Courthouses to look up the land deeds. But if I was pressed for time, I would go to the Brooke Co., WV courthouse in Wellsburg and obtain copies in particular from these two (three) books: Record Book of Surveys Made in Youghogania Co., VA 1780 by William Crawford, Surveyor (one is typewritten and there is a handwritten copy as well. Get copies from both. Copy both of any deed referring to that land transaction of 1796. These books are on the top shelf, back wall in the room where all the deed, wills are kept. You'll need the ladder which is near.) These surveys have visual area maps of the deed showing number of rods to the dogwood, etc. and on and on - and sometimes a small drawing of a house, stream, etc. Also listed are land owners of adjoining property - usually close friends and in-laws as John Jr. usually married the girl next door. ;) Another must get: Ohio County Lands Pertaining to Brooke Co., VA Record Book - This book contains land deeds in Ohio Co., VA which later became Brooke Co. VA in 1797. I consider these two books some of the most interesting sources in our area. So early!!! Happy Hunting, Julia

I'm currently working in Cairo (no, don't ask!) but my wife is in Pettorano most of the time. The best way to get there is via London Stansted airport to Pescara (cheap flights via Ryanair.com), then get the bus or taxi to Pescara centre, then train to Sulmona. Best to hire a car if you can, then it's only 40 minutes to Pettorano by autostrada. Stay at Hotel Santacroce in Sulmona, and ask for Sandi (Italian by birth, but fluent English with an American accent) who works there most evenings. Sandi knows everybody and everything in the area! She'll probably know most of your family names as well. Blame me for introducing you, and she'll probably take you to my house for a visit. Lots of good restaurants in the area, so no problems with food, but if I were you, I wouldn't eat at the hotel. If you can't get there via Pescara, it's about two hours by car from Rome Fiumicino, but at least 4 hours by train (stops at every village) and you have to go back into Rome to get the train. Any more questions, just email me and I'll try to answer. Best of luck Roy Starling

The 1920 Buffalo Dist. census, ED2, p11A, has a S. T. Waskey (surname from index) on Ohio River Road. Listed with him are his wife, Inez, and 9 children. Is the surname Waskey or what? I am a Waskey researcher and cannot place this man or his family. Are there city directories that would give more information? How could I verify that the surname is Waskey? Vicie Waskey Fowler

Both were born in Ohio in the 1830's. I have extensive information on Ann's descendants and am working on George's family. Circumstances indicate that they are children of Peter and Sarah Keller who lived in Carroll and Harrison counties in Ohio. I have no primary proof yet except names on the 1850 and 1860 census. The Phillips line lived in Jefferson County Ohio for several years. After Ann Kellar Phillips died, Elijah moved to Allegheny County PA. Anyone have knowledge of this family or questions about the children's names please contact me. Perhaps we have a fit on our famly trees. Thank you. Kathryn
I am a new member to the Brooke Co., WV mailing list. My surnames are Roberts, Pittman, and Hedges. The family I'm researching is my ggreatgrandfather, Otho H. Janet, <Have you worked with the Draper Manuscripts??? You can rent them on microfilm from AGLL. (Very difficult to read and transcribe.) They are owned by (I think) WI University, and there are several published indexes - some better than others. Julia, what is AGLL??? I have been trying to figure out the best way to access those manuscripts. . . are there any hard back copies I could get on interlibrary loan? Our LDS library is only open 1 1/2 days a week, so that would take forever. Thought I would call my county library today and also the university library in town.> A local library may be a participating member of AGLL or NARA. Or you also can pay a 1 year subscription and have the rolls snail mailed directly to your home. If you do not have a reader in your home, then take the rolls to a local library and use their readers. Here's more info on these wonderful services: AGLL - American Genealogical Lending Library - a part of Heritage Quest in 1998. Microfilmed genealogy records are available to borrow for one month's time for an inexpensive lending fee to cover postage and handling. Not sure if this service continues today. NARA - a similar service: http://www.archives.gov/publications/microfilm_catalogs/how_to_rent_microfilm.html The Draper Manuscripts http://library.truman.edu/microforms/draper_manuscripts.htm are such an extensive collection - only 500 volumes or so. Before you decide which volume/or roll of microfilm to rent - use a published index (and there are many different books to help) to find your ancestor's surname. You'll find them in the best of libraries. Some of the best genealogical libraries have all the microfilm of the Draper Manuscript or just the rolls that pertain to their particular area of the frontier. Perhaps someone can check to see if the LDS have the rights to this document - might be another avenue of convenience. Remember, this resource is considered a 1s rate "document" for any lineage society. Good luck, Julia °´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø URLs: Julia A.
