SHE WAS 106 YEARS OLD - Mrs. Hattie Gardner died Sunday morning - kept memory to the last - Until recently could walk to church unassisted. Mrs. Hattie Gardner, who had reached the remarkable age of 106 years and 1 month died at 2:10 Sunday morning at the home of her son, Henry Brownlee, 72 Railroad avenue. Mrs. Gardner’s maiden name was Hattie Walcott, and her father, John Wolcott, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Mrs. Gardner claimed when a girl she was employed in the household of General George Washington. She could tell many interesting things connected with colonial times. Her memory was remarkable good. She was born in Bourbon County O.,* in October 1792. She married William Brownlee in Kentucky, and with her husband moved to Indiana. At that time the Indians were very troublesome in Indiana, and a great portion of her life in that state was filled with hardships. They came to Illinois thirty-five years ago. Mr. Brownlee died in 1854. Some time later she married Lemuel Gardner, who also died many years ago. Mrs. Gardner has many descendants living in Illinois. She was the mother of twelve children. Those who are alive are Wyatt Brownlee, Mrs. James Burton, Mrs. Ann Schrantz, Henry Brownlee, James, Elizabeth and John Brownlee. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren number 300. On the occasion of the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of her birth she ate at a table at which sat five generations of her family. She was extraordinarily well preserved, and apparently enjoyed the best of health until within the past year or two, when she failed fast. She was a member of the First M.E. Church, and until recent years was able to attend regularly, walking to the church. She retained her mental faculties to the last. She knew that she had to die, and she called her children around her and told them goodbye. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon. The services will be conducted by Rev. FINLEY. The internment will be at Greenwood. From MACON COUNTY, IL DEATH RECORDS, Reg. 2 page 121, #4677 Hattie Gardner; female; white, age 105 yr 18 das; housewife; died Nov. 13, 1898; 2:10 p.m.; widow; American; born Ohio; resident of IL 44 years; Cause - Paralytic Dementia; ill several weeks; Undertaker -Peter Perl of Decatur; Physician - W.H. Surnames: GARDNER, EDGINGTON, RALSTON, SPEAKER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FCC.2ACE/1942.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Tom, Your GARDNERs may still have purchased land after that 1866 date when Jesse EDGINGTON died. That half moon area still had farming in the 1950s before it became an industrial site. I remember an old barn with that old Chew Tobacco sign on Freedom Way near the Fort Steuben Bridge. There is a local researcher descended from the SPEAKER family who lived and farmed there. The census shows many families on that land throughout the 1900s. As a suggestion, visit this Brooke Co., VA/WV site and look for your GARDNERS/GARDINERs in the census: http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/wv/brooke/brooke.htm On that site, the 1810 Census list two – Loyd & William GARDINERs. You see that surname through the indexes 1810 to 1850. I’m now thinking that early pioneer obit/article in my first message was about Lloyd GARDNER who died here locally. He might be the father of William and another generation for you. The site linked above also has the marriage indexes from 1797 to 1899 – but in alphabetical order for the groom only. You might do a search for your Belinda/Malinda GARDNERS – use the “Find In Page” feature of your browser and save time. Keep in mind you may need to research in Ohio Co., & Hancock Co., VA/WV besides Brooke Co., VA/WV. (Many of my ancestors in Brooke Co., VA/WV more or less walked across that river [when it was 6" to 3' deep in the summer] to Steubenville to marry and/or be buried in the newly opened (1855) Union Cemetery. So Jefferson Co., OH may have a paper trail for you as well.) That Half Moon farm is in Brooke, but very near Hancock land. Same with the area at Colliers Exit/Gardner Avenue. My gut feeling is the pioneer land owned by the GARDNERS extended into both counties – same as our city of Weirton. And remember anything predating 1797 would have it’s paper trail in Ohio Co.VA(WV) records. Keep us up-to-date on what you find. Julia

All of this searching is coming from the fact that my great-grandmother and great-grandfather were supposed to be first cousins. Trying to run down the ways that would come out led me to think that the only one that worked was for a woman named "Melinda Gardner" and one named "Belinda" were actually twin sisters (their ages on census are the same). They were linked to a William on Half Moon Farms...you know the rest. I looked up Gow in my database and I don't have any references to that name, so I guess we're either not related or haven't yet found the relationship! Surnames: Ralston, Gow, Gardner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FCC.2ACE/1942.2 Message Board Post: Hi Thomas& Julia, Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents also. I've seen the Gardner's name on a deed map of Hancock/Brooke, seems their land was right in the SW corner of Hancock & the line dividing the county to Brooke, right by the PA state line near my Ralston bunch. I'll check some of the deeds but I have them buried in a pile while I repainted the bedroom & have a file cabinet to clean out before I can get to sorting thur the Ralston stuff- I'm sure one of the land deeds mentioned a Gardner who owned land, just don't remember off the top of the head who it was- maybe a James? I also have a Belinda Ralston who's father listed her as Melinda, Malinda in his will but census listed her as Belinda, she married William Hays as his 3rd wife & buried at Three Springs. BUt what I'm looking for info on is my GG grandfathers sister Barbara Gow Gardner. So while your searching- if you run on anything about her- I'd love to find out more. What I have- 1850 census list her as 33 yrs old, living with parents Samuel & Elizabeth Ralston, only year I've found her in census so far so est her birth year about 1817 by the census info.. Samuel would have been abt 16 yrs old ? born abt 1801 & his next child wasn't born until 1825 so quite a gap of years between kids i think.. Her father Samuel's will in 1881 listed her as Barbara widow of William Gow. A cousin had info on her obit- but no date when it was in the newspaper- it reads & i include the mistakes for you- they spell the Ralston name 3 different ways- Dawlston takes the cake? ha, Harvest Cove ? should be Hollidays Cove- & she did have a brother named James Ralston b. 1836 & alive in 1881 will but I don't know what happened to him-but I'm wondering if the James listed could have been maybe a brother in law named James Gow? info in her obit says; Barbara Gow Gardner died at the home of C.Caleb in Bellair at 9 o'clock Sat evening in the 87th year of age, death being due to infirmities of old age. Mrs. Gardner was born in Hancock co later removed to Steubenville, she lived in this city about 6 years living in the Patterson addition to Elm Grove and 3 months prior taken to home of relatives in Bellair. Mrs. Gardner was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel DAWLSTON of Harvest Cove (?) her husband having proceeded her death about 4 yrs ago. The following brothers & Sister survive, Mrs Margaret SMITH of Harvest Cove (?), Mr Alexander RALSTON of Kings Creek (my GG) Mr. George RAWLSTON of Toronto, OH & William & Francus RAWLSTON both of Harvest Cove (?), one brother (? think it could have ment Brother in law?) James GOW of this city. No arrangements have been made for the funeral but the remains will be laid at rest near the old Homestead at Harvest Cove WV.(?) She had a sister Martha Jane who died in Oct 1910 she married Robert Osborne & was not listed in the obit so maybe the obit was written after 1910? Barbara isn't listed in the Three Springs cem list that I've seen so far so I can't confirm death date- maybe I should try for d cert in Jefferson co OH? I've been trying to find her in census but no luck so far. She was Barbara widow of William Gow in 1881 father's will so had to marry the Gardner man after that maybe in Jefferson co OH as I've not found a marriage record in Brooke or Hancock records yet. Will dig out the land deeds as soon as I can check for them & post it here for you when I can. Thanks, Good luck & Happy Trails in your searching, Kim Ralston Dresser

Years ago while browsing through some microfilm of Steubenville, Jefferson Co., OH newspapers, (at the Schiappa Library, Steubenville, OH) - I ran across a very interesting article of the passing of an well respected and early pioneer Gardener who lived in Kings Creek area. The time period of the article was in the 1880s. Unfortunately, I don't remember his given name or the year. Have always regretted not copying that article as I live in Weirton (both in Brooke & Hancock counties) and that article contained early Gardener generations and their pioneer settlement in our area. So many of these pioneers are lost in time. This would be a "must have document" for any Gardner researcher. While Weirton lacks early newspapers - microfilm newspapers for Steubenville begin in 1809 and features genealogical information on many residents into western PA, panhandle of WV, as well as touching counties of Jefferson, OH as! many were related to citizens in Steubenville. But the really detailed information from the surrounding counties begins in the 1880s with special little weekly articles. You would find Eldersville, PA or New Cumberland, or Wellsburg (Charleston) VA/WV community reports as to who was traveling to visit an elderly aunt, trip to the World's Fair, or a humorous and recent fishing trip by a local resident. A few years ago two individuals have abstracted names from 1809 - 1900 newspapers with the hopes of preparing an index to help researchers. Hopefully someday these will be in print or on-line for all to share and enjoy and you might find that GARDNER article with ease. As for Half Moon farm - . I don't see GARDNER in the early deeds unless he obtained the land at a much later date. That area of 800 acres belonged to (my ancestor) Thomas EDGINGTON from 1782 and was passed to his son Jesse EDGINGTON (obit - http://krutillaja.home.comcast.net/JEdgingtonObit.htm). Click here: http://krutillaja.home.comcast.net/GEdgingtonFamily.htm for info on this family that settled on Half Moon in 1778. After Jesse's death in 1866 - these are the abstracted deed transactions for that farm: Brooke Co.,VA/WV Inventory BK#7 - Harmon Creek farm, 29Aug1866 $5,207.55, $4,953.50, $2,622.30; Cove Farm 124 acres of Thomas EDGINGTON to Samuel ORR, Ezekiel GULLET $9,702.82; and 93 acres to Samuel VAUHN & James McBRIDE $5,631.34, 217 acres to Wm. KIRKPATRICK $17,637.75 Many of these surnames still have streets named after them - GULLET, ORR for example. For some reason I keep thinking the early GARDNERs lived nearer the PA line and near the current Weirton Medical Center at the Colliers Exit in Weirton, WV. (Don't quote me on this - as I see the name associated with property on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue in Weirton, WV and adjoining the extensive land of the RALTSONs along Kings Creek. And I believe the GARDNERs owned hundreds of acres of land as well right after 1800. Perhaps a RALSTON researcher can check their deeds for confirmation on this. There is also a Gardner Avenue connecting to this Colliers Exit - you might check Map Quest for the actual location. Love seeing those old pioneer names posted, as everyone thinks Weirton formed with E. T. WEIR's Steel Mill after 1900. Wishing you new found ancestor, Julia A. 1. Looking For - DOULING - PHILLIPS
    2. List, Anna Eliza or Eliza Anna DOULING was my Great Grandmother who stated ondifferent census that she and her parents were born in West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania. She was born c. 1846 - where? parents? She married Elijah PHILLIPS sometime in the late 1870's and on the 1880 census they were living in Chartiers Burough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. This was the second marriage for Elijah, his wife Anne Keller/Phillips died sometime early 1870's. On the 1870 census they were living in Brooke County, West Virginia. Anne's parents were living just a few doors from them. I have searched the census for DOULING but haven't located them. Anna Eliza doesn't come up in any of the indexes at all, anywhere. Elijah died in the 1890's and "Annie" is on the 1900 census in Carnegie, Pa. and in 1910 she was living with a Frank Heberle and his wife Maud (who we believe was a PHillips) and she was listed as mother-in-law in Midway, Washington County, P. After that, nothing. So, I assume she died sometime between 1910 and 1920 but that is not a certainty. If anyone has any knowledge of DOULING, PHILLIPS, KELLER or KELLAR please get in touch with me. As you can tell, there bits and pieces of information and I would like to continue on with this line of my family. I hope someone can help solve this mystery. Thank you. Alice California

Has the Brooke County Genealogy Society, Historical Society, or an individual read the cemeteries in Brooke County? Have any books been published? Jacob Foulk was in the pottery business in Morgantown, WV during the early 1800s.
