Hi, Be sure you schedule an appt. with the Wellsburg Library as they have some great resources but the genealogy section is not always open. You have to have an appt. I met with Gwen Hubbard and she was great. I would start there BEFORE going to the courthouse. You will save yourself a lot of time. If you haven't already, please check out http://www.brookecountywvgenealogy.org/ Tell her I said hi. My ancestor, Samuel H. Morgan, death records indicated that he was born in Ohio Co., WV, approximately January 1822. A marriage took place in Brooke Co between Edward Morgan and Elizabeth Hedges on January 13, 1820. The 1820 census for Ohio Co., WV listed an Edward, wife and no children and I believe this to be the same Edward and Elizabeth who were married in Brooke Co. In the 1830, Brooke Co, I found Edward and wife with three children (Samuel fits the age bracket (5-10) for a male child) The 1840 census indicated the wife of Edward Morgan was listed in another age bracket, which I'm assuming Edward's first wife (Elizabeth) could have died prior to 1840, or there was an error in the census. (Samuel fits in the age bracket (15-20) for a male child). In the 1850 census in Ohio Co (believe to be the same Edward in the 1830-1840 census in Brooke Co. His wife is listed as Margaret. There is a span between the ages of the children, a gap of seven years, which could indicate the 1st wife (Elizabeth) might have died. Samuel Morgan marriage records were found in Belmont Co. Ohio. He had married Mary Elizabeth Gilliland on February 13, 1844. Mary's father, Thomas Gilliland, was born in Ohio Co and in the early 1800's removed to Belmont Co. It has been said, that Thomas's father had married a Morgan. So there might be a connection as why Samuel was in Belmont Co. Samuel and Mary are in Morgan Co., Ohio in the 1850-1860 census and in 1870 census in Washington Co., Ohio. Samuel died in 1873 and Mary in 1879 and both are buried in the Beverly Cemetery in Washington Co., Ohio. If there is any one who might have information on Edward and Elizabeth, I would appreciate the help. My research for the Morgan family has been a slow process since my grandfather had died at an early age and my grandmother knew little about his family. She lived in California and her father's family lived in Ohio, so there was little contact with family members. Again, any help with this family will be much appreciated. Linda Kent Cave Junction, OR

This Elizabeth I believe is John's sister. Lucinda died Dec. 8, 1861 and John died July 9, 1871. There is also an Elizabeth Stewart in West Liberty Cemetery who died Jan. 1, 1855, aged 77 yrs....possibly John's mother? Is there possibly someone who has records of this cemetery or any way to locate an unmarked grave? John and Lucinda's son, William Harry Stewart Sr., is also buried there but there is no marker. If I could locate their graves, it would be my goal to someday have some sort of marker put up for them. Thanks again! Barb

Does anyone know what asylums were around Bethany, WV, in 1849? Robert Buchanan worked for the Campbells, who founded Bethany College, in their printing shop and James A. Campbell was declared the guardian for the under age children. I have found nothing on Julia after 1849. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Just thought I'd add this Brashear who lived in many parts of our little area of the Ohio Valley: http://krutillaja.home.comcast.net/BBrashear.htm He was born in Wellsburg, WV - but lived on the PA/WV(VA) border around Frogtown. Yeah, Frogtown - it's in Independence Twp., Wash. Co., PA. His Civil War Veteran records also shown residence in Adena, Dillonvale, & Coleraine, Jefferson Co., OH. And he returned to Wellsburg to die. These early residents traveled as much as we do now. At 05:25 PM 2/27/2004 -0500, you wrote: >I do not know anyone with this last name.

Callendin (Callendine), who appears on 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Hamilton County, TN, with wife Annie, daughter also named Annie, son-in-law T.J. Walker, and two grandchildren, Mabel and T. Guss Walker. J.D. lists his and both his parents' place of birth as West Virginia. The surname is definitely spelled Callendin on the census, but I have not been able to find any lists that use that spelling. Callendine seems to be one of several spelling options. Very much appreciate any and all assistance. Richard
