Lois, I think this may help you, maybe you have seen it already, but there is a series of articles on the "Brady Brothers" A Pennsylvania Historical Romance. It is in the "Williamsport Grit", 1885. I hope I can lead you to the article. First go to the James V. Brown Library at www.jvbrown.edu/ from there go to Info Center at top of page, click on digital Archives, click on Paper of Record, click on Search the Archives, go down to Williamsport Grit and click, when you get there type in Samuel Brady, or go to August 30, 1885. I sure hope I gave the right directions, let me know if you have a problem. It tells alot on Samuel Brady and also the father and all the brothers, very interesting. Please let me know if you found it. Here is something I found, which I am pasting on here. Druscilla Swearingen is one of my ancestors. WEST LIBERTY First organized town in the Ohio Valley. Formed in 1787. First court of Ohio County met at Black's Cabin here in 1777. Nearby is grave of Captain Samuel Brady, hero of the Pennsylvania and Virginia frontiers

John, Wellsburg was a marriage capital for a while. Instant marriage, - no waiting. Taxis anxiously await at the train station to whisk you away for the ceremony and celebration afterwards. It was a booming business. Some of my relatives who lived across the river in OH - ventured into WV for marriage and then onto the trains to Pittsburgh and beyond for the honeymoon. What possible reasoning would prompt a couple from Blacklick and Homer City PA to travel Wellsburg WV in December 1923 to be married? Their marriage certificate shows the witnesses as being a Presbyterian minister and his wife but doesn't state that the ceremony was performed in a church. As far as I know, there were no relatives in the area. Did Pennsylvania have restrictions that West Virginia did not? Any help most appreciated. John
Julie, Thank you. I thought that was it. That would explain why my Great Grandmother was confused maybe about Virginia and West Virginia, but why Pennsylvania? I am begining to get a picture of the area in my mind and realize its all pretty close, so that must be it. Poor thing, I have a feeling that maybe she had never really thought about any of that until she was confronted by the census taker. I have no idea how educated she was. I am still hoping that someone in the Phillips, Keller or Douling might still be around and remember a relative talking about family and who married who. I am a optimist. Thank you again, I appreciate your help. Alice
<Is there an Independence Cem. in Brook County? I'm looking for Angelina Brown Lee. Martha> Martha, Independence Cemetery is just across the border (from Brooke Co.) into Independence Twp., Washington Co., PA. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/pa/county/washin/usgs/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/pa/county/washin/usgs/indep.jpg It's only a 5 minute drive from Franklin Cemetery, Brooke Co., WV on the Wellsburg-Washington Pike. If it wasn't for that Welcome to PA sign, you'd never know you crossed the state line. Julia
Alice, <She was born in 1846 and I am wondering if WV was still just Virginia at that time? > WV didn't become a state until the civil war in 1863. So yes, Brooke Co was still VA in 1846 and extended and included the current area of Hancock Co., until it separated in 1848. Julia
Would anyone on the list know of anyone who might have photos of gravestones from the old Chapman family cemetery in New Cumberland? I've been told the old stones are now gone, fallen to the ground (or plowed under, or whatever, by the property owner). These would be graves of early settlers, "Captain" George Chapman (died 1812) and his wife, Johannah Lemaster Chapman (died 1843). Thank you for any assistance. Pat Pulasky

I am trying to determine what happened to the children of James Marshall, Esq. (not Col. James Marshel) who died in Brooke Co. after May 24, 1814. Those named in his Will were: James, John, Elizabeth, wife of Henry Jeffers, Rebecca, Samuel, Mary wife of JacobSlagle and Agnes wife of Gabriel Duvall. Any information would be appreciated. Sincerely, Debbie Harrison, Terrebonne, OR
List, I know that Elijah Phillips and his wife in 1870 were living in Brooke County. A few doors from was the Keller family. Probably Ann's family. Ann died in the early 1870's and Elijah married my Great Grandmother Anna Eliza DOULING. In the 1880 census they were living in Chartiers Borough, Pa with his children by Ann and a son Albert with 'Annie". I really need to find out any information I can on Annie's family. I really don't know which state she was born, she put Pa - WV - V on three different census. and on one of her childrens death certificate was Mother - Anna Douling - b. Pa. It really is a puzzle. She was born in 1846 and I am wondering if WV was still just Virginia at that time? Anyway, I thought maybe a descendent of the KELLER family still be around and maybe shed some lite on the situation. I have been searching for two long years and have found nothing, not even the year she died or where she is buried. So, please, I hope someone can help. Alice California

West Liberty is in Ohio County and the STEWARTS in our northern panhandle lived in the current area of New Manchester, Hancock Co., WV. (That area was Ohio Co., VA until 1797, then Brooke Co., VA until 1848. You might post your original query with the Ohio Co. List and state the name of the cemetery to direct interested parties who may have your answer. Julia < I don't have documentation showing where they lived, but I do know John and Lucinda are listed in the Brooke Co. census I believe in 1840 and 1850, and next door is an Elizabeth Stewart with daughter Caroline, both listed in the family Bible. This Elizabeth I believe is John's sister.. . . There is also an Elizabeth Stewart in West Liberty Cemetery who died Jan. 1, 1855, aged 77 yrs....possibly John's mother? >
