He married a gal named Rachel and they had Albert Zink, my great-great-grandpa. I have been all through the census records and cannot find anything on Leonard between 1820 when he lived in Rapho Twp, PA and 1870 when he'd in Behtlehem Twp., OH. What I do know is: Leonard and Rachel Zink (ages 74 of PA and 55 of NY, respectively) are on the 1870 Bethleham Twp., Coshocton Co., OH census with children: (1) Harriet, age 20 of PA, (2) Albert age 18 of PA and (3) Susan age 16 of PA. Albert Zink married Margaret Lint, daughter of Conrad and Sarah Lint, born 1854 in Clark Twp., Coshocotn Co., OH. They had Frances Lovina Zink, my great-grandma, born 1875 in Clark Twp., Coshocton Co., OH. On the 1880 Coshocton Co., census Frances and her mom Margaret are living with Margaret's widowed mother Sarah Lint. Margaret is a widow, too, Albert having died between 1875 and 1880. Margaret went on to marry Theodore Murphy (I haven't found the marriage record, I presume it was there in Coshocton Co.) and moved the family to Toledo, Lucas Co., OH sometime prior to the 1900 OH census. On this census, Margaret is widowed and living with her daughter Melvina Murphy in her brother John Lint's house. Daughter Frances Zink married Edward Sampsel of Mill Creek, Coshcoton Co., OH and they went with Margaret & Theodore to Toledo, Lucas Co., OH where they had several children including my grandma Ameda Sampsel. Ameda Sampsel married Harvey Hartford of Oregon, Lucas Co., OH and they had many kids including my mom Catherine Hartford. Catherine Hartford married Joseph Williams (formerly of Speedwell, Claiborne Co., TN) there in Toledo, Ohio and had 3 kids...me, my sis Jean and my brohter Kevin. We moved to Oregon in 1978 and I've since moved to California with my husband. I was hoping someone had info on his siblings, parents, nieces, nephews, ect., that they'd be willing to share. I use family tree maker, so I can send out a ged.com files. Or I can print things out and mail them. Hope to hear from someone soon.
The following is a portion of a message from George Livingston, the President of the Ebenezer Zane Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution - regarding veteran graves in Brooke Co., WV. ---------- Hello all, Please pass this on to whom ever may be interested I would appreciate it. After 3PM Tuesday May 4 we will place the grave markers for Rev. War Vets. John Doddridge, Van Swearingen & George Cox in Brooke Cemetery. Bill Konkle of Brooke Cemetery is having them put in for us. I will deliver the markers and flag holders to him at the cemetery at that time. While talking to Bill a short time ago he gave me some sad news. The Wellsburg VFW & American Legion will no longer place Memorial Day flags on veterans graves in that cemetery of which there are probably about 200 from the Rev. War thru Vietnam. I guess it is a matter of money. Bill has Boy Scout Troops he can get to place the flags if he can get the flags. I have no idea how much 200 grave marking flags would cost. Bill Konkle can be reached at 304 737 0075. Easier to contact in the evenings. Don't know if the Brooke County Commissioners can help. Do any of you know any of them on a personal basis? You have to know that this upsets me no end. I will accept any suggestions and will do what I can to help. It is a sad state of affairs when we cannot honor our military veterans of the past 225 on one day of the year. Thanks for your help. George

I'm looking for an early marriage record from Brooke County between 1797-1800. Samuel HEDGES married Jane ? Several researchers have her maiden name as MORGAN. Samuel and Jane are buried in the Short Creek Cemetery, Samuel died in 1855 and Jane died in 1857. Census records that were available 1810-1850 show that Samuel and Jane were residing in Brooke County. Thank you in advance, Linda Kent Cave Junction, OR

Monday, April 12, 2004 · Last updated 4:18 p.m. PT Buried veterans records now on Web By SUZANNE GAMBOA WASHINGTON -- Sally Naporlee turned to the Department of Veterans Affairs to find out more about her grandfather, who served during World War I. After a few weeks wait for a response, Naporlee learned from the VA that Carmelo Castorina is buried at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y. Unexpectedly, she also learned from VA that her grandmother is buried with him, a privilege extended to veterans' spouses. VA has made it easier and faster for the public to get answers about family history, old war buddies or famous war heroes. The agency put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator, at http://www.cem.va.gov, also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. Joe Nosari, VA's deputy chief information officer for Memorial Affairs, said the records used to be on paper and microfilm. Private companies have put some of the information online and charged for it, but the VA information is free, he said. Naporlee, of Spokane, Wash., also learned her grandfather served with the Army's 161 DB unit, enlisting June 24, 1918. He was honorably discharged December 17, 1918. The VA's gravesite navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery. The VA will withhold some information, such as next of kin, for privacy purposes. The site will be updated daily. Annually, about 80,000 veterans are buried at national cemeteries. The VA also hopes to add records for veterans whose families requested grave markers from the VA. Those markers may go to private cemeteries or cemeteries overseas. --- On the Net: VA Nationwide Gravesite Locator: http://www.cem.va.gov
List, I don't know the county for certain where my Great Grandmother ANNA ELIZA DOWLING/DOULING was born but supposedly she was born in West Virginia, 1846. I just received her death certificate and her parents were father was DOWLING (no given name) mother (looks like) SARAH PARKS. No place of birth for either of them. My Great Grandmother married ELIJAH PHILLIPS in the late 1870's and were on the 1880 census living in Carnegie, Pa. with Elijah's children from first marriage to ANN KELLER/KELLAR. They were on the 1870 census living in Brooke County. Ann died sometime after that date, not certain when. If anyone is researching these names or has any information I would appreciate it if you would e-mail me. Thank you. Alice California

His book is still in print. I bought a copy of it at Barnes & Noble in paper for $15.95 last weekend. Makes great reading because he clarifies the relationships between world and local history. The reasons for happenings are there as well as the chronology of events. The book is a real eye-opener as far as behavior of the whites towards the Indians, etc. I am especially enjoying the book because I was born in central Pa., have worked all over WV, now live in the northern panhandle of WV near Steubenville OH. Eckert describes all the original settlement in the area and they are all place I am oft times extremely familiar with! Thanks for your reply and good luck with your search. There was a plethora of information there about Brady, and some good stuff about Peter Parchment and James Amberson, his brother-in-law. Also some good stuff about James' brother William Amberson. Draper's work is the most important source of information dealing with the early frontier -colonial, Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary period, and a must review by anyone doing research on that time in American history.

Eckert (about the settling of the Ohio River and the then frontier areas of Western Pa., Ohio, WV & Kentucky) there are references to these men. Amberson has 2 references, Parchment 12. Haven't read that far in the account. The book was originally published in 1995; I believe Eckert based it on original documentation, but already have a problem with Brady's death scene... I have a firm date of Christmas Day 1995 for his death, where he has him dying on New Year's Day 1800... I am not sure how much he has fictionalized for the sake of the story, but I also know I came across the 1800 date myself, but it was very vague. Also, there is something out there in historical collections called the DRAPER MANUSCRIPTS. Amongst other stuff about the history of the opening of the "old" northwest territories, they contain 16 volumes dealing with Samuel Brady. I have not seen them; I know they have been micorfilmed and that Marietta College in Marietta Ohio owns a microfilm copy. The originals are held by the Wisconsin Historical Society - you can view the details at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/military/draper/index.asp With that amount of material, you might find more about Parchment and Amberson. Hope this helps you.
