I do know that Samuel & Jane are buried in the Short Creek Cemetery along with some of their children. Samuel died April 15, 1855 & Jane died May 4, 1857. Some researchers have Jane's maiden name as MORGAN and I haven't been able to verify this information. I'm hoping someone might have some idea on Jane's maiden name. Two of Samuel & Jane's daughters married into the MORGAN line, Elizabeth Hedges married Edward Morgan (my direct line) and Emily Hedges married John Wheeler Morgan 2nd John Hanna(sic) 3rd ? Clark. John and Edward Morgan were the sons of Joseph & Rachel (Spahr) Morgan. Also, I have not found any information on these children of Samuel & Jane. Mary Hedges b abt. 1805 m. Is there anything I can help with? Have you been there before? If you can go back far enough, everyone in Pettorano is related. It is amazing there are only so many surnames of people who lived there and we all seem to have most of them in our family trees.

    1. BAXTERs - Look in all directions
    2. Julia A. (Heaton) Krutilla
    3. Hello Louise, I would suggest you follow the progression regarding the area of Brooke County to search for records on the BAXTERs and don't limit yourself to Brooke County. Here's a link to an early map: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvbrooke/WestAugusta.htm The records you are seeking to connect your BAXTERS may be in Ohio Co., VA; or perhaps even Yohogania, VA. Early BAXTERs also settled around the current New Cumberland, Hancock Co., WV area - and you never know if there might be a family history or document providing an early link. It's difficult working with these early pioneers in this valley as they sometimes ventured across the Ohio River as early as 1797 leaving a paper trail in Jefferson, Belmont and Columbiana Cos., OH. Mine (who first documents appear in 1779) did as much and it's a great paper chase to find them as they wander back and forth in these three local states of OH, PA, & WV/VA. Remember this panhandle is only 3 miles across and the river back then bonded the communities and served as transportation as the Ohio lands opened. Before the locks were installed in the early 1900s, that Ohio River in the summer months would sometimes measure only 6 inches in depth - low from it's usual 3 feet depth. It currently is maintained at the depth of 25 feet for navigation. Julia PS: To further confuse everyone, if your ancestors lived above Cross Creek (Brooke Co.) in the panhandle (where the northern line of Ohio Co. in the linked 1782 map above), that land was disputed by both PA & VA. You'll find documents on those settlers in Yohogania, PA' Washington Co., PA; and before that - Cumberland Co., PA. Those who served in the VA Militia in our panhandle during the revolution would sometimes apply for a pension through PA - as it provided a larger pension. >I'm still trying to trace the Baxters back to their arriving in Maryland >in about 1635.
