    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Painter, Doughterty, Rains Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FCC.2ACE/2021.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Do you know if any of your Painters moved to Ohio before 1830? My great-great grandfather was Henry Painter and my great-grandfather was George Washington Painter who was born in 1835 in Warren County, Ohio. Henry married Masser Wells in 1830. Her maiden name was Dougherty but she married Isaac Wells in 1820. I'm assuming Isaac died but haven't found a death record. The Dougherty's came from Northunberland, PA and settled in Warren County, Ohio. I have been unable to get any further back than 1830 for Henry. If any of this sounds like it might connect with your Painter family, I would appreciate hearing from you. Jeane Stultz

    1. Criswell, O'dell, Lane, Gossage, Potter
    2. Hello All Brooke County Researchers! I am new to the group. Here are a few sunames in my research. I am researching Criswells: Richard:born about 1768 in MD; lived Brooke County VA; died either in Brook County, Ohio County or Marshall County. He married Elizabeth Lane and had the following children in the same areas mentioned. > Richard > Enoch > John > Lloyd > Unity > Mary > James (my direct line) (married Temperance Potter) (son, George is my GGF) > and more Researching O'dells:. My Ggrandmother was Mary Jane O'dell who married George S. Criswell in 1870 West Alexander, PA. Mary Jane was born in 1848-49 probably in Brooke County. He father was from NY or Canada, depending on which census you believe. Her father's name may have been "J.J.". Mother unknown. Researching Potter's: Temperance Potter married James Criswell after 1850 and before 1860. Her parents were Humphry and Martha and she had a sister, Jane. Researching the surname Gossage or Gorsuch. Nicholas & Suzanne were married in MD and moved to Brooke Co., where they lived in the 1800s. These were relatives of the Richard Criswell I mentioned first. Thank you for this group. -Donna Criswell Mollaun

    3. The Painter house that Julia referred to (actually it was a Manchester house - they married into the Painters) still stands in all its splendor on Pa. Rte. 231, abt. 3 miles south of Avella, in Independence Twp., Washington Co. It was built ca. 1820, modeled after houses in the Manchesters' old home of Newport, R. I. It's still occupied by members of the Painter family. Ken Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

The Brooke County Henry Painter seems >to fit the Henry I'm searching for. Thanks Hello! I faintly remember an early pioneer PAINTER family and homestead located on the other side of the Brooke/WV/VA line - in Washington Co., PA - and perhaps Independence Twp. Supposedly their mansion still exists or did so in the 1990s. There is a street address of the Painter name as well. Please don't quote me on that - as it could also be Jefferson Twp. Wash. Co., PA. Back in the 1990s local genealogy organizations had a descendant who spoke on the lives of these early settlers and he also had the PAINTER name. Good luck, Julia
