    3. Heirloom dresser returned to original owner's descendants http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06142/692071-51.stm Monday, May 22, 2006 By Bob Batz Jr., Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Highberger dresser finally is back with a Highberger. The clunky old Empire dresser was in the Post-Gazette last June, when its Philadelphia-area owners, Suzanne Davis and her son Randal Davis, shared its story. After removing it from the family homestead in Wilkinsburg, Randal Davis had found inside an old note written by a late relative explaining, "This dresser was made of wild cherry wood, which grew on the farm of Daniel Funk in Westmoreland Co." The letter writer explained that when Mr. Funk's daughter, Mary, married one Jacob Highberger, the chest was built to be part of Mary's wedding trousseau. With the note, Mr. Davis found framed tintypes identified as "Jacob H. and his wife." Mrs. Davis, who is related to the Highbergers only by marriage, wasn't fond of the dresser, but rather than get rid of it, she decided to try to return it to the family and so placed an ad in the Post-Gazette: "SEEKING descendants of Jacob Highberger & Mary Funk of Westmoreland County. Married circa early 1800s concerning/to return family heirloom cherrywood dresser. ..." After seeing the story, dozens of readers contacted the newspaper, many of them seeking to claim the dresser and others just hoping to help with clues. The latter will be happy to know that, nearly a year later, the Davises have delivered the dresser to a direct descendant: Paul Highberger, and his wife, Thelma, of Greensburg. Mrs. Davis had (with a local cousin's help) found and had hoped to deliver the dresser to Mr. Highberger's father, but he subsequently died in an accident. She and her son delivered the dresser to the couple on May 14, on the drive here to close on the sale of the Wilkinsburg home. They also gave the couple the note and photos. Mr. Highberger, whose family tree shows that Jacob was the brother of his father's father -- his great-uncle -- says Jacob "does look like my dad." He and his wife are quite tickled to have the dresser, which their family plans to fix up. It has inspired them to try to find the location of the Funk farm and do more research into their roots. Mrs. Davis says she and her son are "ecstatic that the chest got back to direct descendants" and called them "wonderful people." Mrs. Highberger agrees they had a lovely visit and is amazed that the dresser "came home," where it will stay. "It's just a nice good history to have and to keep going."

Surnames: Pugh, Wright, Greer, Davis, Duncan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FCC.2ACE/479.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I recently posted a message on the PUGH board seeking information on Pughs in Brooke County. I will paste the message below because it relates to this thread as well. In particular, I would like to know more about Peter and his family as his family was close to Aaron Pugh's family and I believe Aaron is in my direct line. Thank you and here is the message: I am seeking help from anyone with knowledge of Pughs in the Brooke County, VA (now Hancock County, WV) area during the period of 1800-1850. The specific area is New Manchester (also known as Pughtown or Fairview). I have been working on sorting out all of the Pughs in that area, at that time, for the past two weeks and it seems as though at least two separate groups of Pughs arrived on the scene at approximately the same time (Abt. 1800). One line appears to have descended from Hugh Pugh (b. Abt. 1712 in Smithfield, Fayette County, PA). The second group appears to have come from North Carolina. I would like to compare notes with anyone working in this area. I am not concentrating only on Pughtown since many Pughs lived across the Ohio River in Jefferson County, OH and others lived in nearby Beaver County, PA. I have traced my line back to Lewis Pugh (b. Abt. 1811). He was either born near Pughtown, Brooke County VA or in Jefferson County, OH. He spent his early working life in Greene Township, Beaver County, PA working as a laborer. He then moved (back) to VA and was a farmer there before moving to Indiana. While I only have bits of evidence at this point, the puzzle seems to be coming together. I am currently exploring the possibility of Lewis belonging to Aaron Pugh (b. Abt. 1775, d. Abt. 1834). Aaron was the son of Hugh Pugh (b. August 1746 in Walpack Township, Sussex County, NJ). This is the Hugh that purchased 400 acres of land near Fairview, VA from William Randolph on February 10, 1806. It has been documented that Hugh Pugh and Elizabeth Davis had six sons and two daughters. Hugh transferred ownership of (sold?) 76 ½ acres to his fifth son, David (b. Abt. 1779) sometime before 1810. David then laid out 113 lots and called the town “New Manchester.” Two of Hugh’s sons, Peter Pugh (b. Abt. 1770) and Moses Pugh (b. March 5, 1778), were living near him in Brooke County at the time of the 1810 Census. Aaron, who I believe may be my Lewis’ father, was living across the river in Springfield Township, Jefferson County, OH at the time of the 1820 Census. Reviewing subsequent Census data, it appears as though the families of Aaron and Peter were very close. I have not found good documentation on the children of Peter and Aaron but I will share what I have. I believe that Aaron had a first wife but I do not have a name. I believe they had three sons but this needs to be proven. The names I have for the three sons are Hugh Pugh (b. Abt. 1799 in OH), William Pugh (b. Abt 1810) and Lewis Pugh (b. Abt. 1811). It has been documented that Aaron married (his second wife?) Mary Greer (b. ???) on February 10, 1820. Four children have been listed for Aaron and Mary: Nancy Ann Pugh (b. July 7, 1820 in OH), Belinda Pugh (b. December 23 1824 in Jefferson County, OH), Rebecca Pugh (b. September 10, 1828 in Carroll County, OH) and Aaron Pugh (b. January 21, 1833 in Carroll County, OH). Peter Pugh and Anne (or Anna) Duncan may have had eight or more children. The 1820 Census for Brooke County shows five males and six females, who could have been their children, living with them. Names that I have for their children include: Lena Pugh (b. ???), Sarah Ann Pugh (b. ???), Hugh Pugh (b. Abt. 1795), Alexander Duncan Pugh (b. Abt. 1801), Mary Polly Pugh (b. Abt. 1802), David Pugh (b. Abt. 1805), John B. Pugh (b. January 1805), Nancy Pugh (b. Abt. 1812). While specific information on brothers Peter and Aaron along with their spouses and children would be wonderful, I am at the point that any information on any Pughs in the vicinity of Brooke County during the period 1800-1850 would be most helpful. I am trying to construct the Pugh lines present in that area at that time to help me determine who my Lewis belongs to. Thanks much. Jeff Pugh

    1. 1841 UK Census On-Line
    2. Julia A. Krutilla
    3. Bronte and Dickens caught napping in 1841 census Stephen Bates surveys the Britain revealed in the earliest modern census to go online Stephen Bates Tuesday April 25, 2006 Guardian Unlimited In the early summer of 1841, Queen Victoria had been on the throne for only four years, the government was led by a long-serving prime minister, Lord Melbourne, whose administration was crumbling, JMW Turner was painting, Thomas Cook was preparing to open his first travel agency, Schumann's first symphony was being played, Charles Dickens was wowing the reading public with The Old Curiosity Shop - and Britain's nascent civil service sent teams of what were called enumerators round the country to see where everyone lived. It was the first systematic bureaucractic census to be compiled since the Domesday Book. Yesterday in an invention that they could never have imagined 165 years ago, the officials' copper-plated entries and dusty ledgers went online for the first time. In theory, everyone whose ancestors were living in Britain that summer will now be able to track down what they were doing, at least so long as they can decipher the writing. With only a little hyperbole, Sarah Richardson, a senior lecturer in history at Warwick University, said: "1841 is the first census of Victorian Britain, which heralded a new age of democracy, progressive society, literary and cultural advancement and imperial conquest." Well, yes. What the documents actually show is who was spending the night where on the evening of June 6. Householders were asked to fill in their house number and street and the name of every person in the house, with their age, sex and sometimes their occupation. There had been censuses before, since 1801, but they had relied on local vicars and poor law overseers and were accordingly much less detailed or reliable. The enumerators collected the forms, compiled the information in pencil, and then destroyed the originals. What is left, therefore, is a snapshot of that night, neatly docketed and filed - and, of course, a picture of a society whose more affluent households were stuffed with servants. At Buckingham Palace, the young Queen was tucked up with Prince Albert, her six month-old daughter, the Princess Royal, and 47 servants including four valets, five footmen, two dressers, two wardrobe maids, 12 ladies' maids, two pages of the backstairs, the Earl of Aboyne, Baroness Lehzen and someone called George Keppel, described as a groom-in-waiting, who may well be an ancestor of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall - in which case the family has certainly come up in the world, though a precise link may have to wait until royal genealogists have discovered it. Across London at Devonshire Terrace in the parish of St Marylebone, 29-year-old Dickens, already a bestselling author but ever sensitive to his origins, was describing himself simply as "Gent". He shared his house with his wife, Catherine, his four year-old son, also Charles, two baby daughters, four female servants and one 19-year-old male servant, Thomas Hornsby. Up in Yorkshire in the parish of Guiseley, 20-year-old Charlotte Brontë was living in Upper Road as a governess. At Parsonage House, Newton-by-Daresbury near Warrington, nine-year-old Charles Dodgson - later to find fame as Lewis Carroll - was living with his parents, four sisters, two brothers, one gentleman, three private pupils and five servants. At 13 Charlton Terrace in London, a rising young politician, William Gladstone, was living with his wife and baby son and eight servants, including one boy called George Lee, who was 10. Bizarrely, the online company that purchased the licence to reprint the census from the National Archive - MyFamily.com, Inc - is based in Provo, Utah, somewhere that was undiscovered by white men in 1841, the year that the first wagon train set out from Missouri to try to reach California. Those taking out a subscription to trace their ancestors will have to pay £69.50 for the privilege. The archive, which is the latest, and earliest, census the company has put online is not entirely easy to navigate. The enumerators rounded down the ages of adults in the survey to the nearest five years - Queen Victoria is listed as being 20 years old when she was actually 23 - but were also inadvertently able to fool the website search engine by abbreviating first names: Dickens is listed as Chas and the scientist Michael Faraday resides under the name of Michl at his house in Mayfair. Josh Hanna, marketing director of Ancestry in Europe, parent company of the website, said: "We've invested time and resources to scan and transcribe the 40,000 hard to read images written in pencil. This is a milestone in online family history research." The enumerators were evidently felt to have been successful in their task: there has been a census every 10 years ever since. The archive - at www.ancestry.co.uk - now claims to have 4 billion names online. Guardian Unlimited © Guardian Newspapers Limited 2006

    3. Historic Charleston Saturday, April 22, 2006 The Associated Press CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston's downtown historic district has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Keeper of the National Register approved the district's nomination on March 24 and state officials plan to formally announce the listing at a historic preservation conference in May, said Susan Pierce, director of the State Historic Preservation Office. Susie Salisbury of the Charleston Area Alliance said the listing will bolster efforts to market the city to tourists interested in cultural heritage. There are more than 100 buildings in the district, and they comprise a veritable three-dimensional guide to the evolution of American architectural style between the 1870s and the 1940s. The buildings range from late 19th- and early 20th-century stone-and-brick Neo-Classical, Renaissance Revival and Italianate styles, with columns, arched windows and decorative cornices, to office buildings from the late 1930s and early 1940s in Art Deco and other modernist styles. One of the grandest buildings in the district is the Kanawha Valley Bank Building, a 20-story "skyscraper" built in the late 1920s. The city's oldest church, the Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, was built in the 1870s and 1880s and is considered an excellent example of High Victoran Gothic architecture. Several buildings -- like the Daniel Boone Hotel, a 10-story building completed in 1928 -- were already individually listed on the National Register. Homes range from an 1897 Queen Anne brick house to examples of simple boxy American Foursquare homes.
