Colonel McCown was a successful merchant in New Manchester (then called Fairview or Pughtown) and was on the staff of the Governor of Virginia in 1852. I have a publication that contains the following information about people with the Goorley and Liggett names. "Historical Collections of Old School District No. 8, Gilead Township by John D. Foye, August 8, 1903. Times-Democrat Print, Lima, Ohio. "William Goorley, born in Pennsylvania, but moved from Virginia (to Gilead Twp., Morrow County, Ohio) into a round log cabin in 1843, afterwards built a hewed log one, where he lived with his family until he died, and which building is yet standing, now vacant but in good condition. This and the Vaughn-Hobson cabin east on the same road, are the only cabins now (in 1903) left in the original district. William Goorley having previously bought his farm of one George Lee Adams, while he lived in Virginia, sent his wife's nephew, Thomas Liggett, on to farm the land until he could move with his family, who on their arrival were called for a long time the "new-comers." (page 39) It also shows as head of the household William Goorley who was sending to school in the old school district No. 8 in Gilead Township the following children: Ebenezer, John, William, Samuel, Joseph, Thompson, George and Mary Ellen. It is noted that Hannah and Eliza did not attend school. Also during this time head of the household, Thomas Liggett sent to school Martha and Hannah.
