I've recently learned that Burgesses and Berrys settled in Barbados in the Caribbean Sea possibly as early as the 1500s. Burgess is still a surname common there. People assume that their ancestors came directly to the colonies from Europe - Va and NC in most of our cases. Some went to island nations and South America before coming to Va and NC. My Burgess line dead ends at William and Susannah (Unknown) Burgess in Albemarle Co., Va in the 1740s. I intend to attempt a search of Barbados in particular (British colony) as well as other nations in the Carribean and South America. Rick Stewart
Rick, While chasing around the Caribbean, don't be surprised if you meet some of your Stewart relatives also. But beware of being drawn back into your insatiable quest for those with given name Robert. On Jan. 25, 1769, Robert Stewart wrote George Washington from Jamaica, where he was serving as Comptroller of Customs. I understand, however, that this frustrated ancestor of ours (presumably our gg? uncle) never married.
