    3. Hello David and Pam - Here are the Belchers in Boone in 1870: 1. Harrison Belcher, age 27 - living with Francis Meadows - son of Micajah & Malinda (Ball) Belcher-Sherman district 2. John A. Belcher, age 39-son of Micajah and Malinda too - living in Sherman with wife Jemima, age 44 d/o Berry and Rhoda (?) Cauley; children are Green Chapman Belcher, Rhoda M., William Henry, Mary D., Berry M., Martha J. 3. John W. Belcher. age 31 -son of Henry and Annie Belcher of Mercer Co. with wife Rebecca W., age 25 d/o Thomas and Eleanor (Snodgrass) Payne and one child Catherine B. age 1, who died in 1885 - in Scott district 4. Micajah Belcher, age 66, son of Isham and Patsy (Hodges) Belcher who marr. 19 Feb 1828; his wife Malinda, age 61, d/o (?) and Sussannah Ball; Mary E., age 36; and Rebecca age 3 who later married Samuel H. Gillespie- Sherman dist. 5. Micajah Belcher Jr., age 21s/o Micajah and Malinda and wife Eliza d/o Simeon and Eva Bradley - Sherman dist. 6. Robert D. Belcher, age 50, and wife Rebecca, 42, d/o John and Jane Belcher - died 12 Aug 1877; 2nd marriage to Nancy Harvey; children from first marriage John W. age 25 and Martha J. age 20 It appears that half the Belchers in Va/WVa had a daughter Rebecca. My poor gg grandmother Rebecca Belcher Stewart - I wonder if I'll ever find her. Her husband was Elias Stewart. They were from Mercer Co. moving to Boone in mid-1860s. They had 13 children. Rebecca died in an automobile accident at Racine in 1900 at age 72. I have the 1900 Belchers in Boone as well. You all take care. 1. Toneys Branch
    2. My grandfather, James Burton Peters, lived on Toneys Branch in Bloomingrose. He attended the local Church of Christ. Does anyone have any information on the local Church of Christ? Would any of its members remember my grandfather? He went by the name of Burton. One of his Burton's sons, James A. Peters, also lived on Toneys Branch with his wife "Toody" and daughters Carolyn & Debbie. Debbie Peters married Bob Milam & lives in the house now. Debbie's son, Anthony Peters, lives just down the road with his wife & daughter Dakota. Hope some of this triggers some memories. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    3. Hello - Someone mentioned a newspaper called the Boone Democrat or something like that - it preceded the Coal Valley News. Are there archives for this paper? My gg grandmother, Rebecca Belcher Stewart, died in an automobile accident in Racine in 1900. I would think this might have been newsworthy. Both my Stewart and Belcher lines are dead ends at present. I know nothing about Rebecca other than her last name of Belcher and the fact she and husband Elias Stewart and children came from Mercer Co. to Boone in mid-1860s. Elias' parents are Robert and Mary Stewart of Mercer/Giles Va and NO relation to Ralph Stewart. Any info on the Democrat would be appreciated. Richard Stewart P.S. Happy Belated Birthday to Yvonne Booz.

    1. Mike's Meandering/The Conversation -- 8 November 2001
    2. Hello. Yes, it has been awhile. A little over 34 years, to be exact. That's the reason I wanted to talk. I thought I'd catch you up on what you've missed. For starters, I graduated college. Twice! Thank you for stressing education & for the discipline you instilled in me. That really helped. I don't know if I could have done it without you. Married? Yes sir! It happened on 20 July 1985. She's a beautiful girl. A very caring & giving person. I think you'd approve of Nancy. Children? Two lovely little girls, 10 and 7. We named the first one after you. Her grandmother thinks the naming was quite appropriate since little Shelby is as stubborn as big Shelby was. But you and I know Mom. She can hold her own in that department. The youngest is Katelyn. She looks just like me when I was little. Poor thing! We even call her "little Michael." She just smiles. Yes, I show the girls all the old pictures & tell them the stories. Mom? Oh she's a trooper. You'd be proud of her. After you left, she put herself through school & became a nurse. She's been nursing now for about 32 years. She loves it! Times were hard in the beginning. But we made it. And you know those early days were some of the best of my life. Each time I graduated, I gave her the diploma. She worked as hard or harder than I did to get there. She was well deserving. What am I doing with myself? Besides working, I've taken up a new hobby -- genealogy. Yes, family history. It can be very rewarding. Yes, I know I could have asked you. I thought there'd be more time. How did I get into that? I met Herbert's daughter online. What? That's computer lingo. When you're online, you can send someone a letter & they get it instantly. Anyway, Gracie infected me with the genealogy virus. It is great! I am constantly finding new cousins and friends. Hope they never find a cure for this ailment. By the way, how is Uncle Herbert? Good! Tell him, I said hello. Gracie then introduced me to some wonderful people who are members of what we call the Raleigh County list. There we discuss the mines & Coal River. We talk about places named Marfork, Edwight & Naoma. Yes, I know you told me about those places. I visited Grandpa Peters' old place last time I was in Boone County. It was right after Uncle James died. At Bloomingrose, I turned up Toneys Branch. Like always. But it just wasn't the same. Time does that, I guess. James' youngest daughter Debbie lives in the old house now. She married a Milam boy. I'd like to visit Whitesville next time I'm there. Yeah I know. Take Route 3 out of Raleigh. Found out that our family also lived in Wyoming County. The first permanent settlers there were the John Cook family followed shortly by the Ralph Stewart clan. We descend from both of these men. They were military men, each having fought in the Revolutionary War. Yes, I thought you'd like that. Jackson County? The woods are as beautiful as ever. Remember the time we went squirrel hunting there and you lost your sun glasses. Mom's sister "Dee" now owns the old Coleman homeplace. Her son, Clifford "Pete" Casto, shot a buck there last week with his bow. I got some of the venison in my freezer. It'll be gun season soon. How did he get his nickname? When he is a passenger in a car, he always falls asleep. Just like you did. So Grandma Coleman started calling him "Pete" and the name stuck. Oh, that's the dog barking. What kind? It's a dachshund, a brown miniature crew cut version. Named Wilt. I named him after the basketball player Wilt Chamberlain. I know it was you that got me started with the breed. He's the sixth one I've owned. And the girls love him. I've said it before. If the house was burning and the girls could save one thing, Dad and Mom would be tied for second, behind the dog. He is their protector. World Series? The Diamond Backs won. Who are they? They're a team out of Arizona. We'll discuss that next time. If you give everyone there my best, I'll do the same here for you. Dad? I miss you. Let's talk again soon. 1. Mike's Meandering/The Air Force Brat -- 6 November 2001
    2. We moved around like nomads or migrant workers. But our moving was not predicated by crops or season. We moved because of orders that trickled down the chain of command. My father was a career military man, a "lifer" as they are called. He realized that moving was part of his job, as did my mother. It was a little harder on their son. Just as fast as I would make friends, we would move on to other locales. But I adjusted. I had to. I was what they called an "Air Force brat." We lived in different states & on different continents. We traveled, heard new dialects & studied new cultures. I learned tolerance & to respect diversity. I didn't realize it then. But we always seemed to be stationed in a place where major news was breaking. The current events we experienced shaped the future of our family, our country & our world. And we were there on the front line. My father left his wife & 4-month-old baby boy at the Hopkinsville, KY base where we were stationed & went to Arkansas in September of 1957. He was part of a group of soldiers ordered by President Eisenhower to help 9 Black children integrate Little Rock's Central High School. My father came home repulsed by the insults & objects that were hurled at the children. He was ashamed that people in America, the America he had fought for & that his buddies had died for, acted in such a manner. He talked to my mother about one of those children. "All she wanted to do was go to school." >From Kentucky we traveled to Germany. We were there in 1961 when Russia erected the Berlin Wall between the freedom of West Berlin & the communism of East Berlin. I remember JFK's speech of 25 June 1963. Near the beginning of the speech he said, "There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the communist world. Let them come to Berlin! " He ended it to a roaring standing ovation and with the words, "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words Ich bin ein Berliner." I remember this because we memorized parts of his Berlin speech for school. It was his best speech since the 1961 inaugural address, the one with the famous, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." But that was just the opinion of an elementary school critic. >From Germany we went to Florida. We were there in 1962 when the "missiles of October" threatened to push the world off the cliff, where it hovered for a couple of weeks on the brink of nuclear destruction. I didn't know too much about Cuba then. I did know that I liked Cuban Desi Arnaz & wife Lucy a lot better than I did Fidel Castro & Khruschev. My father put my mother, a couple of suitcases & a 5-year-old son in a 1960 Opel station wagon. Florida was just too close to Havana & we didn't have a shelter to protect us from the mushroom clouds. Dad had to stay behind at Tampa's MacDill AFB, because the military was on high alert. He sent us north toward West Virginia, north to live with my maternal grandparents, for a while, in Jackson County. Maybe that wasn't out of harm's way either. But to my father, West Virginia was the answer to the equation of impending danger. It wasn't as difficult as algebra, nuclear physics or rocket science. It was a simple deduction. West Virginia was family. West Virginia was home. Therefore, West Virginia meant safety. >From Florida we went to Texas. We were there on 22 November 1963 when they killed President Kennedy in Dallas. I don't know if I ever have or ever will get over that. I've become a lot more skeptical since then. He was our president. He started the Peace Corps & the President's Physical Fitness Award for children. I had the most trouble with the chin-ups. But I persevered & got one of those treasured awards. I wish I knew where it was today. JFK backed the space program & predicted a man would walk on the moon before the decade ended. I loved the space program. I remember checking out a book form the school library about the original 7 Mercury astronauts. I can still recite their names -- Walter Schirra, Donald Slayton, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Alan Shepard, Virgil "Gus" Grissom & Gordon Cooper. I remember John Glenn riding a rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral and orbiting the earth. To travel so high! The only thing I could compare it to was a fungo hit off my Dad's baseball bat. The ball went up & up & never seemed to come down. Dyess AFB in Abilene Texas was the last place we were stationed. After my father's death there in 1967, my mother & I moved to Columbus, Ohio. We were close to Lockbourne AFB, where we could get the benefits of the commissary & the PX. We were also close to West Virginia & traveled home almost every weekend. We lived in Ohio when Neal Armstrong, a native of the state, fulfilled JFK's prophecy & walked on the moon on 20 July 1969. We also lived there in 1970, when students at Ohio's Kent State University died while protesting our country's involvement in the Viet Nam War. Some things never change. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

I was talking to my mother tonight and she said that "grandma Johnson's" 2nd husband was a photographer--looks like there would be several pictures out there somewhere. She said that my grandmother has some old pictures that I never knew about so I'm going to take a look at these when I go home which will probably be Thanksgiving, and hopefully get some copies of. Were you a part of those yearly dinners at Grandma Johnson's...were'nt they for ther birthday?--I remember the live blue grass etc. She had a old telephone on the wall that I used to envy. Do you have any idea what became of that?
