Dan, Check out this website - http://www.mcn.org/2/noel/Westmoreland/MigrationTrails.htm It refers to migration through Pennsylvania, but since Berkeley Co. is so close to the southern PA border, it might shed some light on your question. You might be able to trace the paths to current-day roads by comparing today's map to the one on this site.
