Check your local public library or local genealogy library for "Handy Book for Genealogists" published by Everton (even my local library has an early edition, one of their few paltry genealogy resources). The 8th edition, which I keep by my computer for easy reference, has a series of migration trail maps. (An earlier edition I bought 25 years ago has fallen apart from use - Handy Book has state maps showing counties, plus data on county formation - dates, from what counties formed, county seat, etc. - to which I refer frequently.) One of the earliest routes west was from Baltimore across Maryland (close to Berkeley Co. VA) through the Cumberland Gap then up into the NW corner of PA to Pittsburgh. The National Road followed this route, then on to Wheeling WV and across OH and IN.
