The 1890 census was officially called the Union Veterans Census of the Civil War which included all surviving soldiers, sailors, marines or their widows. Even though the information is not as great as the standard 1890 U. S. Federal Census (which was destroyed in a fire with the exception of a few fragments), it is somewhat of a help to not only pinpoint the ancestor but also to determine his military information such as date of induction, date of discharge, length of service and information on regiment, etc. Although it is called the Union Veterans Census, there are actually some confederate soldiers listed, probably by accident when the census enumerator came to the door and asked "is there a Civil War Veteran" living here but was not specific about which side! I have seen many censuses where the census enumerator has simply crossed out or drawn a line through the information after finding himself listing a confederate veteran but then there are others where the census enumerator was probably not too happy and it is really scratched out so as not to be legible! Many metropolitan libraries with large genealogical collections such as ours here in Orlando, FL also have the indexes to these schedules (in hard cover books) which would short-cut the search. There is an excellent chapter on Census Records in "The Source Book", A Guide to American Genealogy that will also be helpful. Hope this helps you with your search.
