I have recently done some research into the small Dutch colony which was located near present-day Shepherdstown, WV. Although some of these individuals had contact with the Conewago colony in south-central PA near present-day Gettysburg, almost all appear to have moved directly from New Jersey to the Shepherdstown area. For those interested, the surnames of the Dutch and those affiliated with the Dutch (as I have compiled them) include: BLUE CLAWSON COWENHOVEN DEMOSS (Dutch?) EOFF (Dutch?) HOAGLAND KANADAY NEWKIRK (Dutch?) QUICK SCHANK/SCHENK SNEDEKER SWEARINGEN (Van Swearingen - Dutch?) VAN ARSDALE VAN CLEEF VAN DERVEER VAN DOREN VANDROFF (?) VAN METER VAN PELT VANVECTOR (?) WESTERVELT WESTFALL WHITENECK (Dutch?) WYNKOOP and a few others I cannot figure out VANANHILLER/VANCENHELLER/VINCENTHELLER VANCELEY VANDORCH VANDORRIAS VANDUCER VERDEER Many of these old (1770s) families can be found in the records of 1760s Frederick County, VA. In fact, many of the individuals mentioned in the Berkeley County Minute Books from 1772-1774 and early landowners records 1784-1794 also appear on the "Old Frederick County Parish Record" dating from 1761-1763 as reported in Wilmer Kerns' "Frederick County VA Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley". Many of the Dutch names are badly mangled by the English-speaking record takers. In the event you have a "missing person", perhaps this is where they went. Charles R. Vanorsdale
