OBITUARIES BERKELEY COUNTY VIRGINIA (WEST VIRGINIA) 1791-1855 AND OTHER NEWS Berkeley County Historical Society Belle Boyd House 126 E. Race Street Martinsburg, WV 25401 Preface: The compilation of the obituaries from the Martinsburg Gazette was initially undertaken by John M. Wyndham, Jr. from microfilm made available by Francis Silver V, S.B.C., Surveyor of Berkeley County, West Virginia in 1974 and 1975. It appears from information gleaned from the Gazette that it was originally established and published in Martinsburg, VA in April 1799 by John Alburtus under the title of Berkeley Intelligence and Jefferson Intelligence after which it was titled the Martinsburg Gazette. Alburtus published the newspaper for 22 years then sold it to Editor Washington Evans, Esq. in 1821. It was known as the Martinsburg Gazette and Public Advertiser from 1828-1832, Matinsburg Gazette again from 1833-1836 and for a brief period as the Martinsburg Gazette and Republican. Edmund P. Hunter became associated with the newspaper in 1835. The newspapers on microfilm are from 1810-1855 with some issues missing as indicated herein. The years 1849-1850 are not available. Note: There are other local newspapers included from surrounding areas but I have not copied all of them as the above are the main ones listed. Ann Mohr Osisek > Does anyone own the following book?
