He spoke of her in appreciation of information she supplied the Confederacy and had been brought to him. Belle was an eighteen year old young woman who made consid- erable intelligence contributions to the Confederate States of America during the War for Southern Independence. Belle often braved enemy fire which put holes in her skirt to get current intelligence to the southern armies. One year before this meeting with Jackson, Belle had killed a drunken yankee who was trying to raise this American flag over her house in Martinsburg, Virginia. She was arrested and tried for his murder, but was acquitted on a defense of justifiable homicide.
