Can someone help me figure out where I should be looking for information? The counties changed alot but were formed from old Frederick County. I have a marriage for Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcclay in 1799 that is shown as being at Berkeley. This record is in Keesecker's :Early Marriages". I found records from Frederick county for an Ann Mcclay as being a witness to a marriage at Bullskin (Summit Point Wv.?) in 1793. Also from Frederick County records a reference to the Mcclay property "a little north of Winchester" in 1807. It sounds like these people lived close to the county line of modern Frederick and Berkeley but I have not been able to find any records in Wv. or Va. for the Mcclay's. Should I be looking in Winchester or Martinsburg. At one point it was all Frederick County. How can I tell what records may have gone where? Any help is appreciated. I am searching for James Mcclay. Nothing else known except he had a daughter Nancy born Oct. 1780 in Va. and she was married to Joseph Essex in Aug. 1799 at Berkeley. I hope someone can point me the right way. Thanks, Tim
