Hello, A. I'm sending for a marriage record and I want to make sure this is the correct address. Also, what is the fee? Probate Clerk's Office Berkeley County Courthouse 100 West King St Martinsvburg, W VA 25401 B. I am researching a marriage of Talitha Watson and Hiram Laizure who were married by Esquire Rumbaugh on Aug. 3, 1866. I used to think the girl was from WVA and that was why Hiram got married there. But now I know that Talitha and Hiram were both from Uhrichsville, Ohio. Both were born in Ohio. In fact, Hiram signed a deed to sell property on Aug. 2, 1866 in Uhrichsville. There is a train station a few miles from his home, so the happy couple could have taken a train to get married in Hard Scrabble. The question I have is WHY would someone go so far away to get married? Was it s popular vacation spot? Both parties were over 21 years of age, so they didn't need to go anywhere special to get married. Was Esquire Rumbaugh a person that any of you know about? Thanks for clues & opinions, Sharon Laizure Hofer
Hello Sharon, Here is the phone # for the Berkeley Co. Courthouse- 304-264-1927. You may also want to try the Berkeley Co. Historical Society at 126 East Race St. Martinsburg..Phone 304-267-4713. The Historical Society has a huge collection of records from at least a tri-county area. I can't imagine either why a couple would come here to get married during the year you mentioned..1866. That was but a little more that a year after the Civil War ended. It was not a very pretty place to be.
