    1. [WVBERKEL] Suretor
    2. A Suretor was a person who stood surety. This means that this person guaranteed that the people marrying were above the age of consent and did not already have a living spouse. In other words, they guaranteed that the persons were eligible to marry. This person was very often a relative because the amount could be very large.

    1. [WVBERKEL] Missing
    2. Snowman
    3. My uncle told me this interesting story about a man named John Mcarty (not sure of the spelling of his last name) He said that around 1940 he died (in Berkeley County)while living at the home of a man named Spencer Marpole...Spencer had not known him long and did not even know where he was from ...I am not sure why he was staying at Spencers home...but when he died his body was kept for several weeks while local athorities searched to try and find some next of kin but no one was ever found...He was thought to possibly be from somewhere in Virginia... He was finally buried at the Mountainside Tabernacle Church on the Poor House Road near Martinsburg...(he was the first person buried in that cemetery)... Is anyone out there looking for any Mcartys or know of any relative that came up missing...I know its a long shot but I thought Id post this and see what happens... thanks J

    1. [WVBERKEL] O'Dells "Pioneers of Old Frederick Co."
    2. Kathryn Weiss
    3. I received my copy today, from BCHS, and am pleased to have it for a reference; meanwhile looking forward to my book-kitty replenishing enough to order Mr. Kerns' book. Looking at the contents page of "Pioneers", it shows 3 loose maps included. I received the two Jefferson maps (front & back), but there wasn't one of "Old Frederick Co., VA" by Galtjo Geertsema. Does anyone know if this was supposed to be included with the book as well?? Would I write to BCHS or to Mr. O'Dell to get a copy of that map? Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Kathryn

    1. [WVBERKEL] Microfilm Records. Early Data
    2. Charles Vanorsdale
    3. I am trying to determine the source of some microfilm records I used several years ago (before I started recording such vital items). They were 3 microfilm reels someone else had obtained through interlibrary loan. All I know about them is: 1.) "V150-188: Morgan County Wills 1820-1900; Births 1820-1900; Deaths 1866-1899; Marriages 1820-1899" 2.) "V150-8: Berkeley County Court Records, 1772-1774; Landowners 1784-1794" 3.) "V150-60: Hampshire County Court Minutes, Bonds 1788; Inventories & Wills 1750-1899; Births 1865-1880; Deaths 1866-1894; Marriages 1824-1899" All three start with "V150-". This doesn't look like LDS reels. I would sure like to get these through I.L.L. again, well actually for the first time since I "borrowed" someone else's microfilm order off the shelf. PLEASE help if you can! Charles R. Vanorsdale

    3. Yes, it is available by interlibrary loan--I had it out earlier this year (a copy from the Timberland Regional Library in Olympia, WA, of all places!), and found it extremely informative. It lists all the elders, deacons, etc. and details the history of the Presbyterian congregations in each region. 2. Tim and Chris Whalen
    3. The church rolls (not subscription lists!) would be with the present congregations if the still the congregations are still active. If the churches have been closed, they could be in either of three places. If the congregation merged with another, the church records from the closed church would be with the church they have merge with. If the rerecords are not there, or the church did not merge with another congregation, the church records would be held the Presbytery that covers that area (off hand I do not know which Presbytery that is, but a call to a Presbyterian church in Berkely Co. should provide you with this information. Last but least you could check the archives in Philadelphia - but they will want you to have checked with the local churches first. When writing or calling a church it would be best to get in touch with the Clerk of Session (for a local church) or the Stated Clerk (for the Presbytery) as he or she is responsible for the records and is usually of more help than the secretary at the church. The Pastor can be of a great help also, but he would probably refer you to the Clerk for a search of the actual records.
