We recently learned that George H. Robinson Corporal 11th VA Cav. d. April 24, 1864 age 19 was a Confederate soldier who died at the POW camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was buried at the Tomahawk Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A picture of the headstone is here: http://homestead.juno.com/tomahawkpc/files/cempics.htm The Point Lookout society http://members.tripod.com/~PLPOW/plpow.htm did not have him listed in their records until now. The society would like to know if there are any relatives of this young soldier. They would be honored to have them join their Descendants Org. This is my first post to this list. I hope it will be of some use to someone. I want to thank Chuck Walker, Commander, Turner Ashby Camp 1567 Winchester, Virginia for bringing this to our attention. I found a David Dillon in the 1870 Berkeley Co. WV Census but no district listed. There was no David Dillon in the 1870 Morgan Co. WV Census but I found him listed in a Morgan Co. cemetery near the Berkeley/Morgan County line. The stone indicates: David Dillon died: Winter 1871-72. I believe this David Dillon married Elizabeth Moxley ca. 1868. Would anyone have access to marriage books or a CD giving the marriages for Berkeley Co. that could help me out? I am trying to find a marriage for David Dillon/Elizabeth Moxley ca 1868 and it isn't listed in Morgan Co. It would be greatly appreciated. Sharon
This reminds me that I "heard" that a Maryland County was publishing early church records for MD and WV and were including many never previously published. I obviously don't know the source or anything further about this. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone else heard about these? I am kind of down to last hope which is church records. Wondered if anyone has a copy of Ohio Co. WV Index, Index to County Court Order Books 1777 - 1881, by Kenneth Craft, Jr. May well have be volumes 1-6. This book, vol 6 is suppose to cover surnames N to S. What I am interested in is the Vol that would have G in it. Time frame would have been period when Ohio Co. was part of VA. If you do have vol with G surnames, please contact me at [email protected] Thanks for any help. Beth Shields
I don't know where you saw the specific films that you are referring to, but they are available through your local FHC. It sometimes happens that FHC's use an inventory number instead of the catalog number. But if you have a FHC available it doesn't matter where you originally saw them because you can get the films there. I'm looking for information on a Maria Elizabeth Spielman born 19 Dec. 1756 in Pikeland Township, Philadelphia Co. Pa. Her parents were Johann Peter Spielman and Mary Magdalena. Maria Elizabeth married George Schmid Feb 6, 1783. Peter Spielman (Speelman, Spealman) born 11 Aug. 1783 in Boonsboro Maryland and died 17 Oct. 1867 in Berkeley Springs, Morgan County, W.V. Supposedly he owned 10,000 acres in Rockgap Township, Morgan County, W Va. between Berkeley Springs and Martinsburg. Since we have a repeat of names in our family, we wonder is this Peter Spielman, Maria Elizabeth's son or brother. We are also trying to confirm the marriage between her and George Schmid. Other children of Maria Elizabeth might be Johann George Schmid born 16 Feb. 1782, Jacob Spielman (Peter's twin brother), Anna Elizabeth Spielman born 10 Sept. 1785, David Spielman born aft June 1786 and Solomon Spielman born 1788. Some say Maria Elizabeth might have been a woman of the street, from the number of her children and they're date of birth, no way. She may have been a kept woman or she may have remarried, even marrying another Spielman. If we can find information on Peter Spielman, that may solve all of our problems. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Carol Spielman
They may have been borrowed from AGLL (the film numbers sound familiar) - American Genealogical Lending Library. Ask your library if they have the AGLL catalog - or can get the information on their interlibrary loan network. I asked my local library to look into it some years ago (membership is free to libraries) and they got the AGLL catalog. Borrower usually has to pay for film shipping. You might browse through GENEALOGICAL HELPER or other genealogical publications if available for an AGLL ad and information. Individuals can also subscribe for a fee and get microfilm loans. There are a couple other lending libraries (order through local library interlibrary loan) that I know of - Shawnee Library System (Illinois) and Mid-Continent Public Library Genealogy Circulating Collection (Missouri) - I have the Mid-Continent's 1990 catalog, and Virginia books are numbered V1 through V14, but no doubt their holdings have expanded since 1990, so that is possibly the source of the films. I think we all did not copy/document sufficiently at first. And years ago, copy machines were not as readily available and microfilm printers seldom available. I would vote copy machines and white-out as the most useful inventions of recent times! Charles, I don't really know the original source but if you go to Heritage Quest at http://www.heritagequest.com/ and put these "volume" numbers in the search you will get further info. Dear genealogists, I have recently found out that my ancestor John Revenaugh, also spelled Ravenaugh, Ravenough, Reavenaugh, etc. lived in the Halltown area of now Jefferson County, then Berkeley County, in 1785 and 1786. Does someone have information or could someone tell me where I could find information about Halltown and possibly John? Later in 1796, John lived on property owned by William Little. Does anyone have information on where in Berkeley County that might be? By 1800, John lived in Martinsburg. As an aside, John married a Catherine(Katie) Barnhart, born 1758 in Maryland. I noticed that there is a Peter Bearnhardt (Barnhart) listed in the 1787 Berkeley County Personal Property Tax Lists. Perhaps Katie is a daughter of Peter. Does anyone have any information on the Barnhart family or her? Thankk you for your help. Lance Revennaugh [email protected]
