    1. [WVBERKEL] ZELLER KATTERMAN KIESECKER FETTER ANSPACH REITH BATDORFF PONTIUS
    2. Dan Fetters
    3. Hello Roger, I think I am close to gaining on those pesky Katterman in Berks County. Remember that Catherine Katterman 1781-1858 married to Sam Fetter 1777-1848 were married at Tulpehocken Trinity in 1800. I had been looking at Michael Katterman married to Elizabeth Batdorff, the son of Jacob and Anna Catherine Reith (Georg Anspach widow) Katterman. Even though the date of his daughter Catherine was 1771. I am sure she was married to Peter Bordner now. Michael died in 1781 at Washington County, MD. I did get a copy of his brother John Katterman's will. It took me a year or so to get it translated as it was German and difficult script. He married Margaret Zeller in 1778. In the will he mentions daughter Catherine as one of the first names, which makes me think she may have been born close to the marriage date, it isn't alphabetical. They lived at Stouchsburg, close to the church. Most of their children were baptized at the Christ Church of Stouchsburg. Don Moyer tells me that the Trinity Church is in sight of this one. I find on the Berks Rootsweb page that there is a Zeller cemetery across the street from Trinity and that church founders include Margaret Zeller's grandparents Heinrich and Anna Maria Briegal Zeller. Perhaps my Catherine was married in the church for this reason or that John and Margaret went to it as newlyweds until they got their own house just up the road. I find in the Zeller tree Anpsach, Batdorff, Katterman all the names I have been dancing with. I don't recall if I had mentioned any of the Jacob Katterman will information when we were emailing last year. It shows his son in law as Simon Kiesecker (misstated as Kersher on the internet) and my Catherine's son John Fetter married Simon's cousin Susannah Keesecker at West Virginia in 1828. The towns in the three counties include Brickerville, Cocalico, Stouchsburg and Schaefferstown, all quite close to each other. The Kiesecker were close to my Fetter in Warwick Twp, Lancaster County, I have heard the Zeller were near there before going to Tulpehocken. The Katterman went to Washington County, MD, where Simon and Elisabeth Katterman Kiesecker lived by his father Philip Kiesecker. Michael and Elizabeth might have lived close by too, though somebody recently said there were more Katterman there. When he died too young in 1781, I understand the widow and children went back to Berks County. I am also interested in the Pontius men in the Zeller and Katterman families. My best friend is named Pontious and he is related to the ancestors of those in Berks that I have seen in the trees on line. I do not know his 1800s forebears to connect them, but his were from Indiana and Ohio before. It would be about 8 generations for me to go back to Johann Heinrich Zeller if indeed he is my line. If you are interested in a translation of the John Katterman will of 1829 (death year), I will send it along. Best wishes, Dan Fetters Hope, MI

    1. Re: [WVBERKEL] German Lutheran churches
    2. Regarding German-Lutheran church records, I would consider the following sources: 1)Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia 7301 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119 2)Abdel Ross Wentz Library Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, PA 17325 Both contain significant collections of German congregational and pastoral records. 3)LDS Family History Library - check their on-line library catalog @ http://www.familysearch.org 4)Berkeley Co.WV Historical Society - Don Wood should know the accessibility of those records - I would actually start with this source first! 3. I am looking for informatin on my great grandfather William James Shimp (born aorund 1880) who we believe moved from Lewistown Pa. in the early 1900s (teens or twentys) He married Elsie Weaver (in Pa.) and they had about 11 children. Williams nickname was (Buffalo Shimp) They lived in Jones Spring Berkeley County WV. They moved to Kansas City Missouri in the 1930s, probably had family there. Elsie and some of the children moved back to Berkeley County but William and some of the children stayed on. William died there in some accident (not sure how) and is buried there and some of his line still live there to this day. Williams father was from Ohio. I believe his family owned a Carriage or wagon business in Lewistown Pa. somwhere near the mountain. Thanks very much my email is [email protected]

    2. Dear List This is my first post to this list. I have seen a number of references in the Library of Va. to David Hunter of Berkeley Co. who was the County Clerk during the early 1800s. If anyone has information on David Hunter of Berkeley Co. or his family please get in touch with me. thanks Tracy Hunter

    1. [WVBERKEL] Shepherdstown Dutch "Colony"
    2. Charles Vanorsdale
    3. I have recently done some research into the small Dutch colony which was located near present-day Shepherdstown, WV. Although some of these individuals had contact with the Conewago colony in south-central PA near present-day Gettysburg, almost all appear to have moved directly from New Jersey to the Shepherdstown area. For those interested, the surnames of the Dutch and those affiliated with the Dutch (as I have compiled them) include: BLUE CLAWSON COWENHOVEN DEMOSS (Dutch?) EOFF (Dutch?) HOAGLAND KANADAY NEWKIRK (Dutch?) QUICK SCHANK/SCHENK SNEDEKER SWEARINGEN (Van Swearingen - Dutch?) VAN ARSDALE VAN CLEEF VAN DERVEER VAN DOREN VANDROFF (?) VAN METER VAN PELT VANVECTOR (?) WESTERVELT WESTFALL WHITENECK (Dutch?) WYNKOOP and a few others I cannot figure out VANANHILLER/VANCENHELLER/VINCENTHELLER VANCELEY VANDORCH VANDORRIAS VANDUCER VERDEER Many of these old (1770s) families can be found in the records of 1760s Frederick County, VA. In fact, many of the individuals mentioned in the Berkeley County Minute Books from 1772-1774 and early landowners records 1784-1794 also appear on the "Old Frederick County Parish Record" dating from 1761-1763 as reported in Wilmer Kerns' "Frederick County VA Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley". Many of the Dutch names are badly mangled by the English-speaking record takers. In the event you have a "missing person", perhaps this is where they went. Charles R. Vanorsdale
