    3. Check your local public library or local genealogy library for "Handy Book for Genealogists" published by Everton (even my local library has an early edition, one of their few paltry genealogy resources). The 8th edition, which I keep by my computer for easy reference, has a series of migration trail maps. (An earlier edition I bought 25 years ago has fallen apart from use - Handy Book has state maps showing counties, plus data on county formation - dates, from what counties formed, county seat, etc. - to which I refer frequently.) One of the earliest routes west was from Baltimore across Maryland (close to Berkeley Co. VA) through the Cumberland Gap then up into the NW corner of PA to Pittsburgh. The National Road followed this route, then on to Wheeling WV and across OH and IN. Sometime around 1873 they decided to pack it up and head west. They wound up in a small town outside of Springfield, IL called Athens. Looking at the map, it looks like they headed straight west. I am sure the Civil War had an impact on their decision to move, but I find myself wondering what their life was like during that time. Carla

    2. All- Many researchers don't know the value of a small book published by Ancestry, Inc. title "Ancestry's Guide To Research" - Case Studies in American Genealogy by Johni Cerny & Arlene Eakle. Read Chapter 14 - Colonial Ancestors which describes in detail the Migration Routes of our early country. Also in this chapter are excellent maps showing time frames with canals, highways (of the time), etc. and should not be overlooked - excellent source! Ann M. 1. Re: [WVBERKEL] Migration routes?
    2. One account I've read, contained in a book called "Chronicles of Old Berkeley County" (I think that title's accurate) has a diary from a prominent early 1800's trader from Berkeley Co., who made regular trips to Kentucky by traveling through the extreme SW corner of PA and thence into the SE portion of Ohio, traveling mostly along the Ohio river until about Cincinatti before moving South down into KY. This appears to be a fairly logical route of travel for the time (ie following the route of the Ohio river).... Pat Ventura Researching, in Berkeley Co., STANLEY, RUSH, MILLER, LOWRY, and BRANNON

    3. Curious of Elias Gilpin whom was married to Susanna (Keesecker) Fetter in 1840 in Dekalb, Indiana. Apparently they married after death in 1838 of her first husband. Susanna had married in 1828 to John Fetter in Berkeley County. Family letter indicates she and Elias then moved to Virginia, where things did not work out, so she and Fetter children left for Indiana once again. Doubtful there were any children. 3. Dunkers or Dunkards are terms referring to what was sometimes called "German Baptist Brethren." There have been splits in this group. Grace Brethren is indeed one of the offshoots. The Church of the Brethren is the one I am most familiar with. The United Brethren are a totally different group. Carolyn

    1. [WVBERKEL] Re: Mountain Grove Church
    2. Hello Jayson, Make that DUNKER instead of Dunket. The Dunkers were German Protestants who practiced baptism by immersion. They had similar beliefs in common with other Calvinist groups. The Brethern would be a good mix. Do a search on Google for the United Brethern's web page. I believe they have pretty good historical records. There is also a Brethern mailing list on RootsWeb run by the church historian. I hope it is still active.
