I agree with this subscriber to [email protected] this seems like an "infringement" on some privacy issues such as mother's maiden name & birthdate - what if our mother's are still living? Then it is definitely a privacy issue as it is information on "living" people - think about the questions asked on your credit cards! This is a nice idea, but I don't think it is appropriate for a genealogy mailing list. Most of us subscribe to several mailing lists and get a LOT of messages. Non-genealogy ones like this subject clutter up the mailbox and take up valuable time. There likely is a mailing list for this subject for those interested. I do urge everyone to write down memories of their mother and put this in their personal files as well as sharing it with their descendants, or put them on a family website if you have one. Too often, we neglect (or put off) writing down our own memories of our childhood and details of our own and our parents' lives in our quest for those early ancestors that are so elusive. We would love to know what games and toys our ancestors enjoyed - but we should also describe our own childhood activities for our descendants and anything our parents told us of theirs. I am looking for information about my grgrgrand parents. There may be siblings. George James Clark, m. Mary Ellen MacDonald. George shows up in the 1870 Census as George W. Clark, 34 years old, b. in Virginia. Mary was 31 years old and born in Virginia. Her burial record shows that she was born in Matiinsburg, WV. George had been a Confederate soldier. They had 2 children born in Martinsburg, Lilly F. and John W. John W. was supposedly carried as an infant as they walked the B & O Railroad to the Westernport Maryland area after the Civil War, however in the 1870 Census, John William is listed as 9 years old George and Mary are both buried in a Catholic Cemetery in Barton, Maryland and may have been married, (etc.) in St Josephs Church. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, ********************************************* Leon S Clark 4732 SE 25th Street Tecumseh KS 66542-9300 785-379-0269 E-mail: [email protected] *********************************************
I am interested in the story of three Lemon brothers who came to America in 1708 from Ireland They would have settled in and around Virginia (Berkeley County)... I have learned through other researchers about this but have not been able to get any more information about the families... thanks J __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The mention of Simon Kenton reminded me of reading Allan Eckert's book about him, "The Frontiersman". Eckert is a very thorough researcher and a good writer and anyone interested in learning about the early movement into the western frontier (anything west of Virginia at that time!) should read this book. A warning, however...he tells it like it was with no "sugar coating" and I found it difficult to read of some of the brutality. Susan
Some time ago, Dan Fetters inquired about migration routes from Berkeley County to Ohio. Here is one possiblity: Recently, I volunteered at a Genealogy Day in Urbana, Ohio. I bought a copy of the June 1905 Centennial edition of an Urbana newspaper. An article about the migration of an early Urbana settler gave me the source. An early Urbana settler was supposed to have migrated from Greenbrier County, West Virginia, plus his father was killed in the Revolutionary War at the battle of Point Pleasant on the Kanawha River (WV) in 1774; migrated by travel along the Kanawha River to the Ohio River near Point Pleasant, WV/Gallipolis, OH, then traveled along the Ohio River to Maysville, KY (Limestone, then; Mason Co.). The route from Maysville to Urbana was associated named after the well-known Ohioan Simon Kenton in that era. Other passage on the Ohio River was possible, and Maysville/Limestone could still have been a possible stopping point before migration to the Champaign/Logan County areas. I would like to contact someone who is researching James Dougherty who lived in the Sleepy Creek area of Berkeley County around 1775. [email protected] (Willa R.)

In the George Washington papers Series 4 dated May 7 1774 pg. 199 to 201. Valentine Crawford to Washington, Jacob's Creek, 1774: Dear Sir, I am sorry to inform you the Indians have stopped all the gentlemen from going down the river. In the first place, they killed one MURPHY, a trader, & wounded another, then robbed their canoe. Does anyone know who this Murphy was who the Indians killed? Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Becky Murphy Dahl
> Don Wood at the Berkeley Co. Historical > Society--he is very knowledgeable and I found him very helpful. The > Berkeley Co. Hist. Soc. has a lot of genealogical resources I will second that! Don Wood knows more about history/genealogy in Berkeley County than you would think is humanly possible. While about 75% of my research is elsewhere, I live in Berkeley County and have had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Don in person on numerous occasions. While Martinsburg Berkeley County Public Library is an excellent library in general (I work for a library automation company), the genealogy resources are ... sparse, but the historical society, just a few blocks away, more than makes up for that. I've never gone to the courthouse and asked for genealogical information, so I can't speak for them. To Lori Miller - You posted a query about Samuel Miller, b. 1787, on the WVBERKELEY mail group recently. While I don't have specific information on your Samuel Miller, there are some sources that you might want to check in Berkeley Co.... In Martinsburg, there is a Berkeley Co. Historical Society, which has a quite extensive donated genealogy file centering on the Miller family of Berkeley Co. The file is mostly in loose handwritten papers, is not very well organized, and not professionally documented, but is all contained in one big file cabinet, and the gentleman who manages the Historical society office is well familiar with the file. I too have a Miller (David Miller, b. ca 1725) ancestor in Berkeley Co., and was able to find some information about his ancestry while digging through that file.... From what I've been able to glean from various records, there appear to have been 2 brothers, Hugh and my ancestor, David, born in the early 1700's with connections to Berkeley, and there are numerous descendant branches from both... There is also a pretty extensive genealogical collection online, with many of the Berkeley Co. Millers in it.... It can be found at the following URL, and was created by Ronald McComb, who is also related to the Berkeley Co. Millers, and, as I recall, has visited this collection in Martinsburg as well: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=rmccomb However, a brief perusal of that genealogy record this evening did not turn up your Samuel Miller.... But there may be other clues in there. Hopefully, this will be of some help to you. Pat Ventura - researching in Berkeley Co: RUSH, STANLEY, BRANNON, LOWRY, MILLER
Pamela-- If you live in the vicinity of a Mormon Family History Center (hopefully one with congenial hours--they vary a good deal), you can order (borrow) the relevant will book on microfilm for $3.25, for viewing in the center. You can also order deeds on microfilm, which might show you whether your ancestor owned land (order the deed index first). There are a lot of Berkeley Co. records available on microfilm through the LDS--see http://www.familysearch.com/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitydetails&subject=189871&subject_disp=West_Virginia,_Berkeley&columns=*,180,0 (if this link is too long, try http://www.familysearch.com and click on Library and then Catalog). This is ultimately the cheapest (and to my mind most enjoyable) option, because you can usually find a number of records of interest on one microfilm. The Berkeley Co. courthouse does not have the resources to assist in genealogical quests (at least so I was told a few years ago), and they generally forward such requests to Don Wood at the Berkeley Co. Historical Society--he is very knowledgeable and I found him very helpful. The Berkeley Co. Hist. Soc. has a lot of genealogical resources--see http://www.bchs.org/genealogy.html A third option is to request a copy of the will and any other specific document (according to Ross Johnston's index *WV Estate Settlements* Frederick H. also had an estate account dated 9/17/1783) from West Virginia Archives. They charge a research fee of $10 which covers up to 10 (or? can't remember) pages of photocopies--copies over that cost 25 cents each or something--I don't remember the details, but they, too, were helpful, swift, and professional. See http://www.wvculture.org/history/ (it's a very interesting website, too). Good luck! I just found some information on line about my ancestor Frederick Hershfield/ Harshfield. He was from germany. Wife named Abulan. He died in Berkeley County. His will was proved 21 April 1778. Will Book 1, page 125. How would one get a copy of that will? Are there books showing if he owned land there? I am curious to know what part of Berkeley Co he resided in. How can I find that out? His son Henry was listed on ancestry.com as in the Rev War with Geo Washington at Valley Forge under the command of Capt Swansey. Notes say he left Berkeley Co VA in 1792. Why? Did they offer soldiers land in the "west?" thanks, pam
I have asked in several queries elsewhere but I don't think I posted it here, but if I did, please disregard! Was Berkeley County on some major migration trail? So far I have run into three of my family surnames that have lived there. What's the odds of that? Two of the families were first in PA then Berkeley County then by some fate all ended up in Kentucky. Pam
I am looking for information on Samuel Miller, born 25 Nov 1787 in either Berkeley or Pendelton County, married Mary/Maria Bedinger, daughter of Henry and Rachel (Strode) Bedinger, on 27 Mar 1816 They had 3 children Rebecca Miller, married John Gorrell ; Anna Miller married George Harris ; and my great, great, great grandfather George Washington Miller, married Mary Elizabeth Davis. I am looking for Samuel's parents if I could. I may be at the farthest I can go. I had searched the 1928 history in the Martinsburg Public Library in 1994 (only Milton S. Miller son of George Washington Miller was listed.) I have recently decided to revisit my research. Can anyone suggest any resources? I have yet to make a stop at the Court House. Their marriage is recorded in the IGI. Also anyone who is searching this line or the Burns family is welcome to ask questions. My great grandfather was Howard C. Miller (son of Milton S.) who married Mazie Rebecca Burns, daughter of John Burns and his 2nd wife Rebecca Garrett. Howard and Mazie moved up to Butler County Pennsylvania shortly after their son Roger was born (15 Feb 1903). They had 8 children. My grandfather was the third child, Clarence Martin Miller. Lori Miller Miller and John Burns families of Berkeley County WV(VA) [email protected] [email protected] You can also find me at the Reference desk of the Butler Area Public Library (http://butler.library-online.org)
Many thanks to those who replied to my query about the OFFERT/OFFUTT family of Berkeley Co. I have run across additional information, that the OFFERTs/OFFUTTs may have come to Berkley Co. from Maryland. Does anyone have any knowlege of this family? I know that there were OFFERTs/OFFUTTs in Hampshire Co. WV. Berkeley and Hampshire Cos. were once part of "Old " Frederick Co. VA. Best Wishes, Ann
