    1. [WVBERKEL] Rev. John Gerrard
    2. Sara Patton
    3. I'm new to this list and to research on Rev. John Gerrard who died in Berkeley Co in 1787. I have a transcription of his will but would like to know more about this early Baptist minister. Is anyone doing research on this family or on early ministers in the area? Can you point me to some good books or other sources where I might learn more? Thanks, Sara in VA

    1. [WVBERKEL] Cookus family
    2. Isabel M. Carter
    3. Hi Berkeley People: I have been learning a lot recently about McClearys, and they have led me to the Cookus family. I have Cookuses coming at me from two different directions, and I am trying not only to find a connection between the two families, but find others related to them. All of my Cookuses were in Berkeley and Jefferson Counties, West Virginia. Angelina McCleary, sister of my third great grandfather, John W. McCleary, married Peter H. Cookus Apr 9, 1821. I have gathered the names of their children from census and cemetery records: John T. (or L?), Mary H., Margaret A., Cordelia, Martha, Elizabeth Ellen, and an unnamed daughter. Rachel Louise Snyder, sister of my great grandmother Ella Snyder McCleary, married Joseph Lambright Cookus before 1875. Their children, as listed by a great aunt and confirmed by census records, were Rachel M., Joseph R., Mary L., Ella R., Albert B., and John William Snyder Cookus. Are any of these names familiar to you? I have purchased the books containing obituaries from Berkeley County, and cemetery records from Berkeley and Jefferson Counties. I also have a CD with will abstracts. There are very few matches, and I am running out of resources. Can anyone help? Thanks! Isabel Carter

    1. [WVBERKEL] Andersonville Civil War POW site
    2. Kevin Frye
    3. Greetings veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. I would like tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 417 prisoners on record from your state and more than 256 West Virginia or Virginia Union who died here, I thought I would send my offer. As Virginia was one of the states that was torn apart and was truley brother against brother,,I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. 3. Hello Sharon, Here is the phone # for the Berkeley Co. Courthouse- 304-264-1927. You may also want to try the Berkeley Co. Historical Society at 126 East Race St. Martinsburg..Phone 304-267-4713. The Historical Society has a huge collection of records from at least a tri-county area. I can't imagine either why a couple would come here to get married during the year you mentioned..1866. That was but a little more that a year after the Civil War ended. It was not a very pretty place to be. Probate Clerk's Office Berkeley County Courthouse 100 West King St Martinsvburg, W VA 25401 B. I am researching a marriage of Talitha Watson and Hiram Laizure who were married by Esquire Rumbaugh on Aug. 3, 1866. I used to think the girl was from WVA and that was why Hiram got married there. But now I know that Talitha and Hiram were both from Uhrichsville, Ohio. Both were born in Ohio. In fact, Hiram signed a deed to sell property on Aug. 2, 1866 in Uhrichsville. There is a train station a few miles from his home, so the happy couple could have taken a train to get married in Hard Scrabble. The question I have is WHY would someone go so far away to get married? Was it s popular vacation spot? Both parties were over 21 years of age, so they didn't need to go anywhere special to get married. Was Esquire Rumbaugh a person that any of you know about? 3. Isabel A posting on another forum - [email protected] - for 29 March 2002 states that instructions to the enumerator were to list persons resident as of the official census date - not the date at which the enumeration was taken. In 1850 that date was 1 June. Thus Rosanna would have been listed since her date of death was after the census date. Pete ----- Original Message ----- From: "Isabel M. I question this because Rosanna is listed in the 1850 census, living in a boarding house with Sarah J. Locke, 22 (daughter?), and 59 years old. The date of the census is July 23, 1850, three days after Rosanna's "death." > > Rosanna is not listed in the 1860 census, so must have died before then, possibly in 1858 if she died at the age of 67. I suspect that the tombstone inscription was hard to read, or perhaps a typographical error was made in the book.
