Many from Chester & Delaware cntys, PA moved to the Berkeley cnty, WV area. I happen to have all the SELLARS/SELLER/SELLERS wills from FTM CD # 209 Pennsylvania Wills 1682-1834 pulled and into a file. If you think there is a chance that your SELLERS came from that area of PA I'd be happy to send the wills file on to you. Samuel was a common given name amongst the SELLERS in that area of PA.
Has anyone come across James W. Mensor (and its spelling variants) who was born approximately 1845 in Virginia and was living in Bunker HIll, Berkeley County, WV in 1880? He married my ancestor's sister, Margaret Mace, presumably in Washington Co., MD where she was born in 1848 to George Mace and Margaret Parks. Their children were Cora Ellen, Savilla A., James, Benjamin and Kate. I know virtually nothing about these children so any help on this family will be much appreciated. I have roots in Berkeley Co., WV as Margaret Mace Mensor's sister, Sarah, married my ancestor David Ramsburg Linton. He was born in Berkeley County, son of Zachariah Linton Jr. and Susannah Ramsburg. Responding to Bob Longbottom, I am not a SELLERS researcher, but thought I might help. It seems that Milton Sellers' parents are, indeed, Samuel and Elizabeth (Criswell) Sellers, who were married 16 February 1842 in Berkeley County. The 1850 Berkeley County census shows: Sellers, Samuel 38 Farmer $120 VA Elizabeth 33 Milton W. 5 Criswell, Elizabeth 19 You may have this: Jennie is Margaret Virginia (mnu) based on marriage records for children Samuel O. Sellers to Sarah E. Noll on 9 January 1906, Osella M. (Rozella) Sellers to Charles H. Freeze on 23 December 1896, and Elender E. (Ella B.) Sellers to Samuel E. Mohler on 13 March 1911; birth records for Ella B. Sellers on 28 September 1887 to Milton B. and Jennie Sellers, Joella M. (Rozella) Sellers on 1 October 1877 to Milton and Maggie Sellers, and Samuel Sellers on 20 August 1879 to Milton and Virginia Sellers. Harry Grossman
Hi List, I am hoping to connect with anyone researching the SELLERS surname in Berkeley County. My great grandmother was Rozella SELLERS who married Charles Hamilton FREEZE. Rozella's parents were Milton SELLERS and Jennie UNKNOWN. Miltons mother was Lizzie UNKNOWN. She was living in Milton's home in 1880. Lizzie UNKNOWN could possibly be Elizabeth CRISWELL who married Samuel SELLERS in 1842. Hoping to find some cousins and answers out there. Thanks Bob Longbottom Mogadore, Ohio
Robert Lott was married in Berkeley Co and a Guardianship paper was filed in Berkeley Co in 1793 regarding his children. I think at the time of the killing mentioned below, he was probably living in Berkeley Co. If the killing took place in Berkeley Co. and he was tried in Berkeley Co, where would be the best place to look for trial transcripts/records? "Virginia Gazette, or, The Winchester Advertiser - Died - Mr. John Kennedy, killed by Mr. Robert Lott one day last week as he attempted to serve an order on Lott." (p3, c3) - Wednesday, July 15, 1789 from the Henley Marriage & Obituary Database: Catalog card; The Library Of Virginia Film 283. They have a history room up on second floor which one must access from the elevator. Ask at the circulation desk. The Berkeley County Historical Society archives are located in the Belle Boyd House on Race and Spring Streets. This is in the railroad station area and across the tracks from the old round house. The hours are 10-4, Mon-Sat. Mollie Seibert Ziegler
Don't forget the Berkeley County Historical Society at the Belle Boyd House, on E. Race St., they are open at least 5 days per week with a 9am -4pm schedule. Their resources are enormous and the staff is great. There are many family research files available from the files contributed by a local genealogist. They also have many local newspapers on file with antique obituary and other notices. The Courthouse has a great deal but if you go you will have to transcribe the oldest records by hand and should be aware of the fact that it must be done standing and in crowded conditions. G. Courtney, Thanks for the information. Hope to be there this coming Saturday or Sunday Oct. 26 & 27 and then in the area on Monday. Robin Fife

And please could some kind soul (SKS) please inform me - on list - if the Berkeley Co. Library in Martinsburg is the library where one does genealogy research? Is there a historical society/genealogy society/club that has a library and if so, where is it located and what are its hours? Thanks in advance (TIA) Deborah in the Glenmont Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, USA
Rebecca, Thanks for the information, Robin Fife
Can anyone tell me if the Berkeley Co. Library in Martinsburg is open on Saturday or Sunday and if so what are the hours? Planning a trip there soon and my stay will involve one or both of those days as well as a Monday or Tuesday for Court House searching. Also can anyone tell me how to get to Johnsontown or Johnstown? There is a cemetery there that I would like to see. I have been told that I have Blamer relatives there. Thanks for any help. Robin Fife [email protected]

Looking for information about a John Bates who died abt 1684 in Essex county. He was married to a Margaret. they had two children Elizabeth who married Richard Roads in 1688 and William who was born about 1670-1673. After John Died Margaret married a John Seymour. Her children Elizabeth and William took John Seymour to court and each received a cow. Thank you, Harry! Another person also thought it was "Sleepy Creek", and also that there was a fort (or fortified camp) of some sort called Sleepy Creek in 1756 along the creek. This was a time of many Indian raids (some led by French officers) on the Virginia frontier, and many settlers fled to safety in PA or NC - some did not return. This was part of the French and Indian War. Thanks also for the Mendenhall family details. Another site says Aspen Hall built in Martinsburg ca 1776 by Edward Beeson II contains part of a house dates to 1754 built by the Mendenhall family. Can someone help me figure out where I should be looking for information? The counties changed alot but were formed from old Frederick County. I have a marriage for Joseph Essex and Nancy Mcclay in 1799 that is shown as being at Berkeley. This record is in Keesecker's :Early Marriages". I found records from Frederick county for an Ann Mcclay as being a witness to a marriage at Bullskin (Summit Point Wv.?) in 1793. Also from Frederick County records a reference to the Mcclay property "a little north of Winchester" in 1807. It sounds like these people lived close to the county line of modern Frederick and Berkeley but I have not been able to find any records in Wv. or Va. for the Mcclay's. Should I be looking in Winchester or Martinsburg. At one point it was all Frederick County. How can I tell what records may have gone where? Any help is appreciated. I am searching for James Mcclay. Nothing else known except he had a daughter Nancy born Oct. 1780 in Va. and she was married to Joseph Essex in Aug. 1799 at Berkeley. I hope someone can point me the right way. Thanks, Tim
In re: to Ruth's query about John Mendenhall. The creek in question, I would say, is Sleepy Creek. This water course runs from the South through the heart of Morgan County before emptying into the Potomac River. The main stream and the Middle Fork Sleepy Creek and other tributaries flow from Frederick County, Virginia. There is also a South Fork Sleepy Creek within Morgan County. All of these combine to be Sleepy Creek. Of course, the area that is Morgan County was Berkeley County (mostly) between 1772 and 1820. Prior to 1772 and in 1756, the area that is Berkeley County was Frederick County, Virginia. I suppose John Mendenhall's home place was in what is today the eastern portion of Berkeley County. His will was probated in Berkeley County 11 June 1773. It names his wife Martha, sons Mordecia, Stephen, Moses, and James; son in law(s), Jacob Hildebrand, Christian Hildebrand, Joseph Brain. There is a deed in Book 3, page 60 (Berkeley County) in which James and Margaret Brown sold 343 acres to Henry Miller 14 April 1774, on the West side of Opequon Creek adjacent to Richard Beeson, Andrew Campbell, John Wilson, George William Fairfax, and John Mendenhall. James Mendenhall is on the personal property tax list for the year 1787 for Berkeley County. Opequon Creek forms most of the boundary between Clark County and Frederick County (Virginia) and part of the boundary between Jefferson County and Berkeley County (WV). And, it is, almost 25 miles from there to Sleepy Creek. Hope this helps, Harry Grossman
I will be in Berkeley County for a very short time-maybe 1 1/2 days at the most, and would like to do a little research. I would like to be as productive as possible. Can someone give me a little guidance? My ancestors came to Berkeley County after the Revolutionary War, so many of the records would be earlier than 1800. Just in case, I am researching Shober and Bowers. I have some information, such as John Shober's Revolutionary Pension application and Henry Bowers' estate file, from 1788, marriage records. I would like to look at land records, and try to find some way to connect Susannah Bowers Shober to Henry Bowers. Thanks in advance. Ellen Rowan Taylor
Does anyone know anything about John Mendenhall (and his children) and where his land was ca 1756? Did he have a fortified home called Fort Mendenhall? My ancestor, Job Curtis, guided a militia party 25 miles "from Mendenhalls to (Slospy/Stespy/Hosfey/or???) Creek" in 1756. The creek - which I would like to identify - was probably out of what is now Berkeley County. Job Curtis named James Mendenhall his executor in his will of 1804. Ruth Dunlap
