    1. [WVBERKEL] New to the List
    2. Stephen Lewin Dba Black lewin
    3. Hello List Members, My name is Charlotte Barns Lewin. I am new to the list and hoping someone on the list can help. Also, I want to apologize in advance for the length of this query. My gggg grandfather, Stephen Barns is a puzzle. No one knows where he came from or where he was born. He first appears in 1803 buying property in Ohio County, (West) Virginia. From then forward, I have tons of information. Stephen was a miller. He operated mills in (West) Virginia, Ohio and Indiana simultaneously. Clearly, he used the Ohio River as a super highway. He owned at least 2 mills (saw and grist) in Owen County, Indiana. One was located on Rattlesnake Creek. He had at least one mill on Barnes Run, Monroe County, Ohio and another on Buffalo Run in what is now Tyler County, West Virginia. He can be found paying taxes on these properties in the same years. I believe his wealth of sons-in-law made the number of mill operations possible. Anyway, when Stephen bought property he bought large tracts. This brings me to my questions. According to information I have found, there was a Stephen Barns in Berkeley County who had at least two sons, Stephen and George. Does anyone have any information regarding the elder or junior Berkeley County Stephen Barns which might help confirm or eliminate the younger Stephen as my gggg grandfather? (It would appear the time frame of the elder's death would fit.) I know little else about the Berkeley County Barns/Barnes family. For instance: Would the younger Stephen Barns inheritance be substantial? Did the younger Stephen Barns survive long after his father's probate? Are there any tax records available for the years 1782 through 1805? Are there marriage records for either father or son? Any information, positive or negative, would be most helpful. Below are a few brief particulars about my gggg grandfather. Only two children survived to 1880. My ggg grandfather Isaac Barns, 1880 census, said he couldn't remember where is father was born (nice going granddad!). His sister, Priscilla Barns Landrum said Kentucky. Stephen's oldest daughter claimed her birthplace as Maryland. The other children, born between 1795 through 1804, said they were born in Virginia. The rest were born in Ohio or Indiana. Stephen BARNS was born about 1767. He most likely married Margaret (LNU) about 1791. Margaret was born about 1773. Margaret died 07 June 1837 in Owen County, Indiana. She was buried at Barnes Cemetery, Franklin Township, Owen County, Indiana. Stephen died 24 September 1843 in Owen County, Indiana. He was buried at Barnes Cemetery, Franklin Township, Owen County, Indiana. Children of Stephen BARNS and Margaret (LNU): i. Mary (Polly) BARNS (1792-1864). Polly claimed to have been born in Maryland. Married William Wells ii. Nancy (Ann) BARNS (1794-1849) Married Isaac Brown iii. Martha BARNS (1795-). Martha claimed to have been born in Virginia. Married Alexander Scott iv. Sarah (Sally) BARNS (1800-1862) Sarah claimed to have been born in Virginia. Married Ambrose Foster v. Ephraim BARNS was born about 1802. He most likely died, childless, before 1843 as he is not listed (nor his offspring) among the heirs of Stephen Barns. vi. Isaac BARNS (1804-1888) vii. John BARNS (1807-1848) viii. Priscilla BARNS (1811-1885) Married Edward Landrum 1.9 ix. George BARNS (1813-before 1860) 1.10 x. Margaret (Peggy) BARNS (1815-1877) Married William Leak. Married Daniel Price, Jr. Any help...suggestions....advice would be gratefully appreciated!!! Thanks for your patience with a newcomer. Charlotte [email protected]

    1. [WVBERKEL] Bohrer family - deeds, land records, wills and probate records
    2. djaquiss
    3. I am interested in and researching the Bohrer family who were in old Frederick Counties VA & MD from the 1720s - to the present. Of course many of the descendants have scattered to many places around the planet. It is our understanding that Abraham and his son, John Adam Bohrer, with wife, Lucinda J. unknown and family were in and owned property in what is now Virginia and West Virginia in the 1700s and that many of their descendents are still there at the present time. We have found many of them but we are still looking. Abraham had two other sons, John Peter and John George and a daughter, Anna Maria that we are also researching. We have considerable information on many of John Peter's descendants but would appreciate any and all information on any and all Bohrer's. Does some kind soul (SKS) know anything about this family? Please send me any Bohrer or descendant information on or off list. If not, could SKS please tell me if there is anyone that is willing to go to the courthouse and/or elsewhere to look for deeds, land records, old news articles, wills and probate records, etc.? I should be happy to pay copying costs and postage for hard copies. If SKS has any information or is interested in finding land records and/or probate records please contact me. Does SKS know if there is anyone doing Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK http://www.raogk.org/) in or near Washington County, MD? Thanks in advance (TIA) D. JAQUISS

    2. Hi I am searching for a family of Brooks. They were listed on the 1787 Tax List in Berkely County, VIrginia. I will gladly trade info or pay for copies for anyone having info on this family. Paul Brooks married in Newtown Penn January 15th, 1784 and then shows up on the tax list of Berkley. Then on to Shelby County, Kentucky. Was this a migration route for early settlers? Thanks Bev Wyman

    3. Hi, I am looking for information on a Peter or John Cooley that may have lived in Virginia. Peter Cooley would have been there between the late 1600s to approximately 1725. John Cooley would have been there sometime around 1725 or after. If anyone has any information on one of these men or any other Cooleys (Coley, Cowly, Colley or any other variation) around that time. Please share. Kassie (Cooley) Obelleiro

There is also a son Lewis born abt 1861. Most of this Sencindiver family were living in Martinsburg,Berkeley Co but I believe Lewis is listed with his uncle George Sincindiver in 1880 in Mill Creek, Berkeley Co. I am trying to locate this Lewis 1835 to determine his parent's names. I know this line & can't find clear data to prove who his parents were. It is my belief that his parents may have been Elisha Sencindiver & Elizabeth Lewis Sencindiver who reportedly had only 1 unknown child. 3. Jo You need to change a setting in Outlook Express 1. With Outlook Express open go to 2. Tools/Options/Security 3. Under security make sure to uncheck the selection for "Do Not allow attachments to open......" That will solve your problem. Of course you want to be running a current updated antivirus program all the time so nasty stuff won't make its way into your computer. 2. Carol Digby
    3. I am looking for information on Lewis Bean. He was born in Marland. His parents supposedly emigrated from Holland. Lewis married Hannah Sheetz in 1852 in the Shenandoah county of Virginia. Their first born, George M.Bean is the lineage I am seeking. George had a romantic interlude with Catharine Weaver which resulted in my grandfather being born.I believe, that once Lewis reached the Shenandoah Valley ,he stayed there until his death. I am trying to find anything I can on Lewis Beans parents. So far I have been unsuccessful. Any scrap would be a greatly appreciated. Thanks, Carol.

    2. I am researching my mother's family - DODSON of Frederick Co VA. Have been looking for anything on a cousin by name of Lewis Franklin Dodson son of William Dodson and Lucy Dodson Bywaters. Have recently been told he is buried in Yellow Springs, WVA. Not sure where this is and have not found much info. Lewis was a POW during WWII; came home and married and moved west - not sure where his wife was from. They did have a daughter. I think he might have lived in Kansas. I do not know how or when he returned to VA/WVA. Any info will be very special to me. Thanks!

    2. In a message dated 8/12/03 6:03:04 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I would suggest you try the Morgan Society which is located in the UK. They should have a website. Where did Edward Morgan live in 1670? USA or the UK? Unless he is the immigrant, it should not be that hard to get back to his parents. Even if he was immigrant, have you checked Peter Wilson Coldham's books on immigrants? ALso the Bristol Register - these are all books in major libraries within the USA. If he was the immigrant, where was he born? Please do not try to force the pedigree to connect up the Edward Morgan living in 1670 with the guy living in the 14th century - you would be surprised at how many people try to do that. Be aware that you are working with Welsh patronymics and Philip ap Morgan might be a problem. Who was Philip ap Morgan's father and who was Philip ap Morgan's child - what name did that child possess? The very early day Welsh pedigrees were not written down on paper - they were memorized and recited by Bards, who were men who worked for gentry and recited their pedigree to them. Only later were the pedigrees written down. I have Morgans but mine are in Wales and I'm not certain what name I will end up with - again because of Welsh patronymcis. We are back to the Hearth Tax.
