William died abt. 1818 in Hardin County, KY. He married Elizabeth Johnston 8 Dec 1796 in Berkeley County, who I had inquired about. If you can't contact her, I will send you what she gave me. Give her my regards. Al Field Washington, D.C. P.S. If you were the Bond or Fayette County coordinator, I would take you up on your offer. They may have been described at one time as being "Pennsylvania Dutch" which doesn't mean they were from Holland but from Germany. "Dutch" is an anglicization of "Deutsch" which means German. I have ancestors who I am sure moved from Germany to PA, then to Berkeley County. One family tree has them being from Holland. Nancy Pundsack

    3. Oh, my gosh!! I expected a suggestion or two , but the response has been most heart-warming. I have received many wonderful suggestions, which I intend to follow up. The first criticism I got was not including the names. I really did not want you to do my leg work for me. Just some suggestions on what avenues I should pursue in my quest. But since you insist <Grin> here goes. Lewis BEAN was born approximately 1825 in Maryland to parents (unknown) whose origin was supposedly Holland. I have even written to a Bean in Holland, and he had not a clue of anyone who had migrated. So, the next record I have of Lewis BEAN is in Lee Township, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He marries HANNAH SHEETZ in 1852. Their oldest GEORGE M. BEAN is born in 1854.GEORGE M. has a liaison with CATHERINE WEAVER daughter of John and MAry Weaver of the same area which produces GEORGE THOMAS BEAN in 1873. GEORGE THOMAS is my grandfather. And, in the 1880 census, that poor child is not listed with either father George M., or mother, CATHERINE WEAVER.. GEORGE BEAN is already, by now, married to SARAH V. BARR, and they have started their own family. CATHERINE WEAVER is about to be married to ABRAHAM MILLER of Shenandoah Cty. Now, my problem is finding Lewis Bean's parents. In reading census reports from George BEAN from 1900, he states his father was born in Germany. Was Holland ever a part of Germany? And how would I find German BEANS? And, last and most important. Thank you, each and every one of you, for taking the time to respond. To have so many willing to help is just overwhelming. Carol

    3. I have posted this message to several sources, hoping someone has an answer. There seems to be a paper trail for those who have bought and sold land, made wills. etc. Where does one go to find a relative who probably was dirt poor, and never did any lthing that would involve paper work? Some people have researched their families so thoroughly, that they know what they had for breakfast. I can't even determine my g-g-g-grandfather's first name or where he is buried. I just can't believe they all lived up in the mountains, and never had any contact with the world. CAn someone point into which direction I should search? I'd be grateful for any pointers. Carol

    2. Charlotte, I see the Berkeley County reference for Stephen Barns whose will was written 27 July 1784 and probated 18 November 1784. His wife was Martha and his sons were Stephen and George; his daughter was Elizabeth Barns (Will Book 1, page 373). It mentions land purchased from John Hood, but does not say how much (in the extraction). John Hood had a tract of 1175 acres along the Potomac River, west side of Opequon Creek, patented 1735. It was subdivided and sold as several different tracts. There is Stephen Barns, in Ohio County in 1810, which sounds like your gggg grandfather (1767). Have you ruled out the Stephen Barns that is in Frederick County, Virginia? He married Eleanor Scarff 13 January 1807, daughter of John Scarff? He is probably not yours since he is still in Frederick County in 1810 and 1820. Harry
