How far back do directories go for the city of Martinsburg? Susan Curelop researching GRIMM/KOGELSCHATZ/MATTHEAI/SNYDER in MD then Martinsburg
Isaac Newton Bain ( Bayne ) 1843-1918 a Confederate Veteran of Company E. of the Second Virginia Infantry in the Civil War was born in Berkeley County and died at Bedington, Berkeley County. According to Susan R. Crites book "Civil War Soldiers from Berkeley County West Virginia" published 1999, Isaac left a hand written letter describing his Civil War experience which was in the possession of the Berkeley County Historical Society in November 1999. I am trying to locate this letter as he is related to my family. According to the Historical Society they do not have this letter. Does anyone have an idea where it might be found at this time? Hi I am new to the list and I am trying to find a Brooks family that was on the 1787 Tax list. His name was Paul Brooks. I would like to trade info with anyone having any info on this family. Thanks, Bev Wyman
Is there a list of Revolutionary War veterans graves in Berkely Co. ? Dorrie in Lexington, Mass. [email protected]
The 1890 census was officially called the Union Veterans Census of the Civil War which included all surviving soldiers, sailors, marines or their widows. Even though the information is not as great as the standard 1890 U. S. Federal Census (which was destroyed in a fire with the exception of a few fragments), it is somewhat of a help to not only pinpoint the ancestor but also to determine his military information such as date of induction, date of discharge, length of service and information on regiment, etc. Although it is called the Union Veterans Census, there are actually some confederate soldiers listed, probably by accident when the census enumerator came to the door and asked "is there a Civil War Veteran" living here but was not specific about which side! I have seen many censuses where the census enumerator has simply crossed out or drawn a line through the information after finding himself listing a confederate veteran but then there are others where the census enumerator was probably not too happy and it is really scratched out so as not to be legible! Many metropolitan libraries with large genealogical collections such as ours here in Orlando, FL also have the indexes to these schedules (in hard cover books) which would short-cut the search. There is an excellent chapter on Census Records in "The Source Book", A Guide to American Genealogy that will also be helpful. Hope this helps you with your search. I have two questions: 1. Does this census include verterans from both sides? 2. Would SKS who has this cd possible do a lookup for me? I am looking for: Phillip F. Rimel born January 26, 1834 in Virginia. I have records for a Philip F. Rimel serving in the 58th VA Militia but can not confirm he is the same Phillip F. Rimel who lived in Berkeley County. Maybe this census may help. Thanks Bob Young --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - Send 10MB messages!

Trying very hard to find more information on my CUSTER connection. Franklin Pierce CUSTER wed a woman named Willa/Willy OTTY in Martinsburg. They had three children. One was Edith Virginia who wed a Benjamin Barger, another was a B. Frank Custer who relocated by 1911 to Ohio and the third was a daughter named Pearl. When I looked to the census records, I find "Pearl Elder". She married a David Samuel Catrow and lived in McKeesport, PA. She died in the 1960's and her obit names her as "Elder Pearl" Catrow. I've never seen the word "Elder" used as a given name. Hopeful that someone on this list will comment about the given name. Thanks, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

Have you contacted the Berkeley County Historical Society in Martinsburg, WV? They have materials for not only Berkeley but Jefferson & Morgan counties as well. Another source that I would try is the Charles Town Library. Ann Maitland, FL > Is there a listing of Shepherdstown cemeteries? I am looking for two > ancestors both listed as Rev War soldiers. > 1. Does anyone have a copy of the book that would be willing to look for the following 4 people? Abraham Brouwer Mary Wilt Brouwer Alexander Cameron Sophia Brouwer Cameron All I have for certain on them is that Mary and Abraham are supposed to be buried at the Bunker's Hill Cemetary and supposedly died after 1810. Is the book still available for purchase? or does anyone know which Libraries may have it? OBITUARIES BERKELEY COUNTY VIRGINIA (WEST VIRGINIA) 1791-1855 AND OTHER NEWS Berkeley County Historical Society Belle Boyd House 126 E. Race Street Martinsburg, WV 25401 Preface: The compilation of the obituaries from the Martinsburg Gazette was initially undertaken by John M. Wyndham, Jr. from microfilm made available by Francis Silver V, S.B.C., Surveyor of Berkeley County, West Virginia in 1974 and 1975. It appears from information gleaned from the Gazette that it was originally established and published in Martinsburg, VA in April 1799 by John Alburtus under the title of Berkeley Intelligence and Jefferson Intelligence after which it was titled the Martinsburg Gazette. Alburtus published the newspaper for 22 years then sold it to Editor Washington Evans, Esq. in 1821. It was known as the Martinsburg Gazette and Public Advertiser from 1828-1832, Matinsburg Gazette again from 1833-1836 and for a brief period as the Martinsburg Gazette and Republican. Edmund P. Hunter became associated with the newspaper in 1835. The newspapers on microfilm are from 1810-1855 with some issues missing as indicated herein. The years 1849-1850 are not available. Note: There are other local newspapers included from surrounding areas but I have not copied all of them as the above are the main ones listed. Ann Mohr Osisek > Does anyone own the following book? Sorry if this seems posted twice. I didn't see the original posting should there have been one. I still am in need of some help locating this family buried at Green Hill. Thanks, Karen -----Original Message----- From: Karen Hangsleben [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2004 7:42 AM To: '[email protected]' Subject: Green Hill Cemetery help locating unmarked grave In 1911, Franklin Pierce Custer was buried at Green Hill according to newspaper accounts of the day. His burial is not noted in the printed Green Hill Cem. abstract. I assume he was buried without benefit of a monument. I'm wondering who else might be buried on the "family" plot. He was married at the time of his death to a Willa (aka Nellie or Willie) Otty Custer. If I wrote to the Green Hill Cem on Burke St., what are the chances I would hear a reply? Is there another place where cem. records are kept to either call or write for information? I'd be happy to call or would welcome assistance from another list subscriber who lives in the local calling area. Thanks for any assistance. Karen Nelson Hangsleben
