I am looking for a COCHRAN family who lived in Berkeley Co., Virginia in 1807. This is what I know about the family: George W. Cochran, Sr. was reportedly born in Virginia (he was "from the Old Dominion" acording to his descendants). He may have been born 1770 - 1780. His daughter Sarah was born 02/October/1799 in Virginia. His son George Jr. was born 07/August/1807 in Berkeley Co., Virginia. He was supposedly in the war of 1812-1815 between Britian and the U.S., but I have found no record of this. His daughter Nancy was born 1811-1812 in Pickaway Co., Ohio. His son Nathan was born about 1815 in Holmes County, Ohio. In my search I found this family (see my notes after the data): 1810 Census, Age ranges in household: 10300-5011100 This indicates tat the household had 1 male under the age of 10 (born 1800-1810) and 3 males aged 16 - 25 (born 1794-1785). There were 5 females under the age of 10 (born 1088-1810), 1 aged 16-25 (born 1794-1785), 1 aged 26-44 (born 1766-1784) and a last female aged 45 and over (born before 1765). It is possible that George lived with his brothers (?) and mother (?). The boy born 1800-1810 could be his 3 year old son, the female born 1794-1785 could be his wife, sister or even a sister-in-law. George's children always refered to his wife, Mary Sunderland, as their mother. Recently I found marriage data indicating that their marriage did not take place until he arrived in Ohio and his youngest son was a teenager. History of Allen County, Ohio, (Chicago: Wamer i.e. Warner, Beers & Co., 1885, 810 pgs), Page #255, 1836, January: George W. Cochran to Mary Sunderland; by Benjamin F. Cochran, J.P.. Does anyone know who this family in the 1810 census was? Is this *my* George or not? Has anyone come across data about this family? Any and all assistance would be appreciated. Can anyone identify the Cochran family living in Berkeley County when George Jr. was born? Terri Rene DaVar-Howard [email protected]

Hello Berkeley! I am new to this list as I trudge onward in search of my Wilson family. A new lead has brought me to you. My name is Janean and I started with my Wilson's in Loudoun Co. Va. Since I've exhausted my efforts there I'm going to start bugging you all, so here we go......... I am in search of this Wilson Family. William WILSON and his family are mentioned, but the author appears to not know his origin. The earliest document she has for him is dated 20 Jun. 1795, Martinsburg, W.Va. Court Records [Berkeley County]: "A[administration?] of the estate of William WILSON Jr. [sic] dec'd granted to Jane WILSON his widow and James KERNEY, they having complied with the law. (James KERNEY was a br[other] of m[other] of Jane KING WILSON. Her f[ather] Philip KING mar. Aug. 19, 1766 Mary KERNEY.) WILSON, John, Will, [probated] 4-16-1783. Dev[isees]: Jane, wife; Ed., Wm., Jacob, James, Jeremiah, John, Thom., Lather, Dan., Isaac, sons; Eliz. CLAWSON, Mary JONES, Sarah, dau[ghters]. Cecil O'Dell, Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia (Marceline, Mo.: Walsworth Pub. Co., 1995), p. 82-83: JOHN WILSON For fifty years, John Wilson lived on a 286-acre tract of land surveyed by Robert Brooke on 24 Dec 1734. "Situate on the west side of Opeckon Creek on the east side of a small branch" (Eagle Run) with a house at the head of the branch drawn by Brooke. Wilson recveived a patent from the Colony for this tract located 1/5 of a mile east of present-day U.S. Highway 11 on 12 November 1735. John and his wife Jean sold 138 acres on the 287-acre patent land to son William Wilson for 35 pounds on 20 March 1775; they then sold the remaining 148 acres to son Edward Wilson for 45 pounds on 21 March 1775. John's wife Jean evidently died shortly after 1775 and he remarried since his will, wirtten 3 March 1783 and proved 16 April 1783, listed his "wife Jane, young children after 21 sell land to be divided between sons and daughters Jeremiah, Jacob, Elizabeth Clawson, Mary Jane [sic = JONES?], Sarah Thomas [sic], Lather Daniel and Isaac." The children of John and Jean were probably three sons: Edward, William and James, and daughter Eleanor, who was deceased with heirs. [Berkeley Co. WV Will Book 1, p. 310] John's son William added a 264-acre Fairfax grant east of the south part of the patent land to his 138 acres on 3 Aug. 1780. He and his wife Jane (Duncan) sold this 264 acres to David Wolgamont on 19 Sept. 1780. John's son Edward Wilson sold his 148-acre north part of the 268-acre patent land to David Wolgamont for 2,500 pounds on 21 March 1780. John's wife Jane of Mason County, Kentucky through power of attorney given to Isaac Wilson and John Jones (executor of John Wilson's will) sold 80 acres of land to Thomas Turner for 720 pounds on 25 November 1796. John had purchased this 80-acre tract from Solomon Hedges, his wife Rachel and his son Silas on 13 August 1770. John Jones married Mary Wilson, heir of John Wilson, and moved to Fryatt County, Kenturcky. A John Wilson of Middleton Township, Monmouth County, East New Jersey sold land he had purchased in 1710 to his son James on 22 April 1727. this sale was recorded on 3 December 1729 with John Wilson personally acknowledging the act to the court. [I have omitted most footnotes, which give particular deed references.]

Dear All I am hoping that SKS will be able to help with this one. The Actor ROBERT HARRIOT BARRAT died 7 January 1970, and is buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Martinsburgh, Berkeley County, West Virginia. (His wife's home). He was born 10 July 1891 in New York City, NY. He was a character actor for more than 50 years who graduated from the Broadway stage to motion picture and television shows; he portrayed the late Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the films, "They Were Expendable" and "American Guerrilla in the Philippines;" in Hollywood. His last film appearance was in the rugged western "Tall Man Riding" (1955)." I am trying to find information about his parentage, as his names are very much 'family' for me (I have ROBERT Joseph BARRAT, born 15 March 1854, London, UK; mother HARRIOT; married 1877, London; died 27 January 1891, New York, USA). I believe that his wife, Mary Dean, is (or was?) a genealogist or historian, as Martinsburgh Berkeley County Public Library has a book by Mary Virginia Dean BARRAT entitled "Dean, Snodeal, Schill, Belt", dated 1993, which is about those four families. Can anyone help please? Reg Paine Oxford, UK

My grandfather worked as an accountant for this company in Martinsburg in the early 1930's. Can anyone point me to sources for information on this company or tell me if it is still in existence?
Mollie, Thanks for the information, most helpful! The 1898-99 is in the timeframe I'm looking at, do you think it lists spouses or just the head of the household? Susan
In answer to: "How far back do directories go for the city of Martinsburg? Susan Curelop researching GRIMM/KOGELSCHATZ/MATTHEAI/SNYDER in MD then Martinsburg" The Martinsburg Library has R.L. Polk's Martinsburg City Directory from 1913-date, which lists name, address, telephone and occupation of city residents. They also have Cumberland Valley Railroad Directory, 1877-78, containing a general directory of the citizens of Martinsburg, WV and Thompson Brothers' directory of Martinsburg, 1898-99; lists name, address, and occupation of town residents. The Berkeley County Historical Society has a very limited collection of the R.L. Polk directories. I think the earliest is in the 1930s. Mollie Seibert Ziegler
Hi, everyone! New to the list. I am looking for someone to lookup a Martinsburg city directory for 1884. I had a great aunt there who worked as a matron in a hotel I have learned. Her name was Catherine (Kate) SHORT. If anyone could give me a list of the hotels there in Martinsburg at that time or if she is listed in that book along with a Harry LARGENT, it would be appreciated and I certainly would exchange information that you might need me to look up. I am in PA. Thank you so very much. Patty
