I am inquiring about the David Miller family i.e...David Miller 1725-1782 and Sarah Agnes Callander Miller from Berkeley Co. Va. I am descended from one of their sons, Joseph and Margaret Hamilton, his wife. Their son DAVID A. MILLER, settled in Missouri in 1835; married Fannie Boley around 1838/39 in Audrain Co., Missouri. I have not been able to find proof of their marriage nor the true name of Fannie E. Miller. She was born in 1818/1817 in Va according to the Census records taken in 1850, Missouri. I realize that there are many, many Miller families in Berkeley Co. However, my Miller family settled in and around Arden, North Mountain and established the apple orchards in Berkeley Co. From an earlier post, it was stated that the families with the last name of Miller, mostly descended from James Miller, the second oldest son of David and Sarah. Children of Joseph and Margaret Miller: Joseph H., David A., William G., Nancy E. (who married James Wm. Henshaw) and Mary Jane who married Benjamin Davis (they settled in Hannibal, Mo. where Benjamin was an editor of a newspaper). Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Donna Duwe
Hello folks, and welcome back to RootsWeb's newly upgraded list system. If you are receiving this post it is because you are still a subscriber to this list, even though things have been pretty quiet due to a number of issues lately. The lists are back now, and I believe you will like the improvements that have been made. The most obvious improvement is a new RootsWeb login system, which you will find at the following link: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Only one account per person is needed, and once you have created it you will be able to organize and manage all of your list subscriptions in one handy location. Like anything new there will be something of a learning curve in the beginning, but I really think you will like it for the new security and personalization features for your list subscriptions. And last but not least, please note my email address as List Owner immediately below this message and following my name. Also note the "List information" link below that, which will take you to the information page for this list, where you will find information to help you subscribe, unsubscribe, and some other things based on the current status of your new log in account. I welcome you back to the list, and look forward to working with you in the future tracking down our elusive ancestors. David E. I've "rescued" and old photograph of Maude Louise STRAYER which was taken at the Nast Studio in Denver, CO. The Berkeley County VA personal property tax lists, 1787-1792, are divided in two, a list for the First Battalion and a list for the Second Battalion. Can any knowledgeable person tell me which part the two battalions encompassed? Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you. Looking for information on a William C. Owens born 1923 and died 1976. Also his wife Virginia H. born 1922 and died 1992. Both are buried in the Payne's Chapel Cemetery in Mill Creek District. I am related to them but I can't find anything else about them. I can't find a marriage record for them or the complete birth or death date. William C. Owens lived just down the road for the Chapel as a kid. His father was James H. Owens. They lived close to the Virginia Line so I don't know where to find information on him. I looked for his death in the Martinsburg Court house and it wasn't there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Craig Gregory

And I am still looking for the father of William W. Watts who married Nancy Ware in Berkeley Co. I believe, but cannot prove, that his middle name was Washington. He moved to Kentucky and became a career soldier, rising to the rank of sergeant major. I believe his wife and youngest children were in Giles Co., TN during the period of his deployment to MS and New Orleans. -----Original Message----- From: Diana via Sent: Friday, July 18, 2014 3:58 PM To: wvberkel@rootsweb.com Subject: [Berkeley Co WV] Watts family I am still looking for James Watts Jr and his father. John, As noted in the taglines at the bottom of this and all other list posts, this list covers Berkeley County at any time in its history. This would include when it was part of Virginia and during colonial times. I hope this answers your question. David E. Please DO NOT reply to this on the list I'm the Admin of this list, and I would like to ask for your help if I may. This pertains to digest subscribers ONLY, so folks subscribed in list mode please completely disregard it. The current default format on this list for digest posts is called "MIME," which means you will receive each digest as a single post usually once a day with each individual post for that day appearing as an attachment. This is the one exception to what you may have heard about no attachments on RW lists, but these are quite safe to open. To read or reply to one of the attached posts, you simply double-click it to open it, after which you can reply to it if you choose to. Generally, replying to it will require little or no editing or trimming as was needed with previous digests here. I have recently become aware that reportedly A FEW service providers do not receive this type of digests very well, although the large majority of them do. If you are not able to double-click on an attachment and read it properly, then it is possible that your service provider may be one of the very few unable to receive and deliver them correctly. If so, please drop me a line OFF LIST AT MY ADMIN ADDRESS BELOW, and I will return your subscription to what is called "plain text" format as before. Likewise, if you are able to use these digests without difficulty but simply prefer the plain text format used before, then drop me a line OFF LIST using the same address below and ask me to return your digest to "plain text" format. As another option you may want to try list mode, and receive your list posts immediately as they come in rather than wait for your digest up to 24 hours later. If you are having no difficulty reading or using the current digests this way, then there is no need to reply or let me know. I try very hard to reply to all correspondence from subscribers, but sometimes replying to everyone is simply not always feasible. David E. I am interested in Berkeley County's role in the Gettysburg campaign. Bunker Hill is described by a southern soldier as having only four houses. Martinsburg included a large building with a brick floor - possibly a marketplace - where soldiers were billeted; the Methodist Church, which was used as a hospital; at least one hotel; and of course the railroad shops where one battery remounted its guns using the furnace and rail iron. What was the population of Martinsburg in 1863? From soldier accounts, I calculate that about 60 percent of Martinsburg citizens were Union loyalists, while 40 percent sympathized with the Confederacy. A southern artillery battery bivouacked on the farm of Hon. Charles James Faulkner. Southern loyalists in the town of Martinsburg included a Dr. Hunter; Mrs. Buchanan, who nursed the wounded Colonel Collett Leventhorpe; Mr. and Mrs. Conrad (along their daughters Jane and Nannie); and Dr. Pendleton - what else is known about these individuals? Thanks, Tom Elmore
