Dear Sue: I have been to lots of cemeteries in Barbour County and there are as many there as you will find in other counties around the country. The questions being asked are rather general and difficult to answer. Yours can be answered, there are lots of cemeteries in Barbour that contain graves that have been there for well over 100 years. My experience in northcentral WV indicates that grave stones placed earlier than 1850 are somewhat rare although I have found some. I don't know of a concentrated effort to save cemeteries in Barbour Co. There is a group in Elkins WV that has recorded some of the cemeteries and have published a couple of books with plans to do more. The WPA back in the 30s recorded lots of cemeteries in WV; these are particularly valuable info since some of the markers have been destroyed or have become difficult to read. An excellent group to check on relatives from Barbour County is Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants ; it is the leading gen group in WV and perhaps surrounding states. If you want more info please let me know. Hope this helps some. Lyle Corder
