Hi Peggy, Kasson still exists and I found it on route 92, it is in the northeastern corner of Barbour County near the borders of Preston and Tucker counties. I found a reference to John Saylor in the Hu Maxwell "History of Barbour County" : "The Minears, and their descendants, became related with many of the people, not only of Tucker County, but of Barbour also. Of John Minear's children, Mary Ann married John Saylor in 1795. He is supposed to have perished in the woods while hunting. A small stream near St. George, where he was last seen alive, is still known as Saylor's Run." I also found two early Harrison Co. marriages of Saylors: David Minear & Catherine Sailor 24 Apr 1787 Frederick Saylor & Barbara Strader 8 Mar 1791 There were no official records of birth kept in VA/WV until 1853. Do you know the origins of the Saylor family? My Reger family which left Basel, Switzerland in 1737 has Seilor connections there. Hi Nick, > I recentely had a communication from an individual working on the > Clevenger family. I've loast the e-address. If anyone knows the > party will you call the attachement to this message to their > attention. It contains a very early reference to a Clevenger in New > Jersey. Thanks for sending the information, it would have been better to send the URL or e-mail address. I don't know if everyone on the list can read the html and I couldn't tell how to contact the researcher(s) who put the gedcom together. This gedcom site sounds pretty interesting, I have found that some of my lines had lived in and near New Jersey before coming to WV (BOZARTH, WESTFALL and perhaps others which I forget now). I wouldn't even tell you this on the public list but wanted to remind EVERYONE that attachments are generally not 'legal' on these lists. I believe the reason for that is to keep the mail load smaller. If any of you have something that you want to share, however, please do and send a general announcement to the list. Thanks! I hope that Clevenger researcher does turn up.... hello to all....could someone please help me. Have just been told that a very elusive ancestor Hannah Saylor/Sailor was born in Kassen (Cassen) VA in 1785. I realize this would be WV now.....in the Barbour County area. In 1785 it would not have been Barbour County though I don't think....what county would it have been? If I am reading my notes correctly....I think it would have been Harrison County. Is that correct? But where is/was Kassen? I have tried the town locator sites and come up with nothing. Being that it was a village in 1785 it is possibly no longer even there......can someone tell me about where it was? Any chance of finding birth records for this area for this time period? What about churches of the area? Any and all ideas, suggestions most welcome. Thank you! Peggy [email protected]
A little more on details: From Barbour Marriage Book 1 1/2 Elizabeth Bolyard, age 20, single, b. Barbour, dau. Jacob and Sally to John Gainer, age 23, single, b. Randolph, s. G. W. and Phebe by A. Lister. It would have been Randolph east of Tygart in 1835-36 when Elizabeth was born. George W. Gainer was in Randolph Census for 1850, only Gainer family recorded there that year. In Randolph 1860 George W. Gainer and Phebe were listed in the household of "Horms H." (Harms) Gainer, with their two youngest children. This was actually Sturms Gainer. (That given name seems to confirm that George W. was of the same family as Elizabeth Gainer [or her brother]). Unsure of source of Phebe's maiden name. Probable date suggest checking Randolph marriages, but for that period some were recorded in Harrison and Monongalia or perhaps even Preston that should have been Randolph (depended on where the preach next stopped it appears). Maxwell has biography of Jacob Bolyard family so name might have been there. Above marriage data courtesy of my sister Catherine Lew Sturm. Found another little item today during random wandering that probably relates to the Aaron Duckworth, father of the early Henry Duckworth of Barbour County. In C. Tatterson's "Poling/Poland Family" there is quoted a deed of Peter Poland (and wife Hannah who was unable to travel from Randolph County -- probably Brushy Fork of Teter's Creek -- to Harrison to sign the deed) to an Aaron Duckworth. My quick reading suggests that Peter Poland and Aaron Duckworth had jointly puchased a tract in Harrison County on Elk Creek. This deed apparently was transferring Peter's interest (Peter as resident of Randolph County) to Aaron Duckworth (whose residence was not specified). Within the deed there was a reference to Allegheny county, Maryland, quite possible where Henry lived before coming to (now) Barbour county. Since most (all?) of Henry's children were born in Maryland, this would appear to be one of those common early absentee purchases for later use or as a simple investment. This location is not where Henry, William and George were living in 1850. In 1805 the younger Aaron Duckworth (of Henry) either was not yet born or was too young to be purchasing property. We do not know yet if Henry had a brother who might have been an early traveler to Elk Creek. Nick Sturm
----------------- I've been working on the Lesher family in Barbour (one of the lost family names) recently. I've found one challending problem. Isaac B. Marsh was married twice. His second wife was a child, one of seven siblings that survived their father Jacob Lesher and Ann Mary Coffman to become heirs of 1/7 each of a farm of about 100 acres on Little Cove Run. (Mary Lesher was living with what appears to be her daughter and son-in-law in Taylor county in 1850, two other daughters and their husbands lived next door.) We have found a brief history of the Marsh family that speaks rather extensively of Isaac B.'s first wife and sons, but seems quite unaware of Isaac B.'s marrige to Jacob's daughter sometime before 1850 (she is the wife listed in the census). Were all of Isaac's children of his first wife? Did she died before he came to Barbour? Or after arriving? There may be a marriage record in Randolph, but I've not found it. There is no record of marriage of marriage bond in the appropriate period (i.e., before 1850) in Barbour county. Nick

I recently found John Sturm, Peter Sturm and Jacob Sturm, probably three brothers in records in Maryland for service about 1754. I've wonder if they receive more than their pay for days of service in what I take to be the French & Indian Wars. At least two of them seem to have migrated into (and stayed at least a while) in WV. It might be there. There was a Peter Bruner (probably a brother-in-law on the same page) and descendants, if not he seem to have reached WV. I believe that was Vol. 9 of a Maryland History & Genealogical Society publ. -- a transcript of about a year and a half of records of pay to soldiers and citizens. Anyone with ancestors that arrived by 1750 and lived for a while in the Frederick County, Md area might want to check that item. I believe it is now in the Broderbund on-line library. Nick
Thanks Nick, I will add this Duckworth information to the Family Album on the web page for those who have missed your post. To you ALL: I have not prepared any topics for discussion 8-) so please do jump in with what you may have. Have you got a brickwall somewhere in your research? Have you managed to break through one? Let us help, or give us a tip! Welcome! I'd like to send this more personal welcome to you who have subscribed to the Barbour County discussion list. The automatically generated one that you have already received gives you the technical directions but probably makes you feel as if a machine were greeting you. Though it is suggested to new list subscribers to lurk (read without posting) and see how the discussion is going before jumping in I'd say forget it this time and write a short introduction to tell us what families you are researching or just a little about yourself. A little about me If you have visited the Barbour County Genealogy web page you may recognize me as the page manager. After looking at what others in the USGenWeb Project were doing for counties around the USA I knew I had to get involved. It has been the perfect way to expand on several of my interests which are genealogy, history, computers, research and writing. A special bonus has been the opportunity to meet people like yourselves. I've always liked "old things" and have some fond memories of visiting my grandparents' farm in Lewis County, exploring the past that was still there, stored in the trunks in the summer kitchen and the little graveyard on the hill. About ten years ago my mother received a package of papers on the family history which had been left by her brother. Getting an unfinished work was too much of a temptation for me to resist so I have been at it ever since, verifying, adding, eliminating and enjoying it thoroughly. My Reger, Lorentz, Martin, Wood, Forinash and related families were in Barbour or nearby from the late 18th century. Some came over from the South Branch in Hardy County, others from Fauquier/Culpeper County, Pendleton County and some from places yet to be discovered. I look forward to hearing from you all and sharing your interests in genealogy, history and Barbour County. Thanks for signing on, Margaret C.
