    1. McBee's of Barbour Co.
    2. Hello to all, I am new to the list and have been reading your posts for the last couple of weeks. I have recognized many names in the postings, from my research in the area, so I am beginning to feel at ease in writing. I am searching for my g-g-g grandparents, William and Elizabeth (Shafer/Shaver) McBee, who lived in Philippi from about 1850 until their deaths in 1887 and ~1907 respectively. William was born around 1814, although various documents put his birth year anywhere between 1810 and 1824. William and Elizabeth were married in Monongalia Co., WV., in 1850, but do not show up on the census there. By 1860, they are listed on the census in Philippi. Both William and Elizabeth are buried at Mary's Chapel Cemetery in Barbour Co., but I have yet to find a death certificate for either one of them, and there are no cemetery records. Together, William and Elizabeth had 8 children; William Porter (my g-g grandfather, married Aritha Corbin), Mary E. (never married), Nancy Jane (married Asa Thompson), Winfield Scott (married Mary E. Armstrong), Lee Roy (married Ida Mouser), Sarah E. (married Jacob Thompson) and Eliza J. (d. at age 15). I am in search of the parents of both William and Elizabeth. I have given all the above names in the hope that someone will recognize them. Information, passed down thru the generations, suggest William was descended from Zadock McBee (Macbee) of MD., then Monongalia Co. WV., however, I have been unable to make the connection. I noticed an obit posting, referencing the Philippi Republican. Can someone tell me what year this paper came into existence or what papers were around in 1887 thru the early 1900's? I would like to try to find if there might have been an obituary for either William or Elizabeth. I made a trip to WV last August specifically to search for any information on them and the rest of my ancestors. I found a great deal of information in the county clerks offices, cemeteries, libraries, etc...but came up empty on William and Elizabeth. I have pretty much exhausted all avenues of search for them and hope that maybe, there might be mention of their parents. I must say that after our trip, my husband and I are considering moving there...everyone was so helpful and so genuinely nice....we absolutely loved it. I am sorry for the long post, but I am truly hoping someone sees a familiar name and responds. Thank you all for your patience. Jill Bolton Riverside, Ca.

    3. Bridgett, I'm sure Levi is of the same family, just need to tie him together with his great grandfather. He was son of John G. Johnson, but not sure which one. I have 3 or 4 John G. Johnsons, 3 of them, including Levi's father, were born between 1815-1820, but I don't know which son of Robert and Mary is the father of John G, and grandfather of this Levi. What a convoluted sentence. How much easier it would be if families would use different names in the various branches. I have either 8 or 9 Levis Also, this obituary should be a model for ALL obituaries. 3. Hi all, copied this at Morgantown, Colson Hall, Believe Robert Johnson mentioned is same Robert we connect to.. let me know what you think Thursday May 13, 1920 Philippi Republican Meadowville, WV May 10-- It was a great shock to the people of this community, when on last Saturday morning at 10 o'clock the sad news was flashed over the local telephone lines that Mrs. Helen Angeline Johnson, wife of Levi Johnson, had died very suddenly at her home, Sunnyside two miles east of Meadowville. Saturday morning her husband went on an errand to the house of a neighbor nearby and when he returned she told him she had everything in readiness to make a contemplated visit to their two youngest sons, who moved to Dauphin, Canada, last month, except to have a line placed in the house upon which to hang some clothing during their absence to keep the rats a nd mice from cutting them. Mr. Johnson told her he would place it when he returned from fixing a water gap, which needed his attention. When he returned after being from the house a short time he found her lying upon the door dead from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were just concluding all arrangements to spend the summer with their sons in Canada, starting in early June and returning in the fall to Elkins where they expected to make their future home. Mrs. Johnson was the oldest daughter of Emory and Catherine GAINER) POLING and was born on June 5, 1854 on a farm on the waters of Teter's Creek adjoining that upon which she died and therefore 65y 11 months and 3 days old. Her father died when she was 12 years old and it devolved upon her to help her mother in raising her younger brothers and sisters, who were James S. who married Louisa Workman and is a prosperous farmer living at Valley Furnace in Cove District; Salathiel, who lives on the old homestead and is one of the best farmers in this vicinity, married Jeanette Ferguson, of Randolph County; Anzina, married Stewart Wilmoth, who sold his property in Cove District to James S. Poling and bought the Daniels farm near Elkins, where he made extensive improvements and a few years since moved to Dauphin, Canada, where he purchased a large tract of land; Augusta, married Robert F. Johnson, who owns a large tract of land at the foot of Laurel Hill, the property upon which his great grand father Robert Johnson, the first settler of that name in this vicinity located. Solomon T. youngest brother is deceased. Her mother, Mrs. Catherine Poling, now 88 years old survives her. She was married to Levi Johnson March 4, 1873, by Rev. Lambert and shortly after their marriage moved in the old homestead, where Mr. Johnson's grandfather, Levi and his wife Rebecca (Cross) Johnson settled in their early married life and lived until his death entertaining many a weary traveler during the night as they made their way from western counties of Virginia over mountains into eastern counties. The children born to this union were Senator Herman G. Johnson, of Elkins, who married Mary R. Barnes, and is editor of the Inter Mountain. Bernice, who married Charter A. Parks; Stuart who married Ethel, youngest daughter of the late James B. Elliott; these two sons and their families live in Dauphin, Canada; Helen, the youngest daughter, married Wesley C. Hedrick, and lives in Frostburg, MD. On last Thanksgiving the sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson gathered with their children at the old homestead- 21 in all-- an unusual gathering, for until that time only two boys above mentioned who died in infancy and a little son of Mr. and Mrs. Hedrick who died in infancy were missing from the family circle. Brief services were held at the family residence after which the body was conveyed to Central Chapel. where funeral services was conducted by the Rev. A. B. Moore, assisted by the pastor the Rev. E. 3. Pat, I have two GAINER foremothers. One of my gg grandmothers was Elizabeth Gainer, daughter of George and Sarah (Vannoy) Gainer. She married John Fling in Randolph Co., and they raised a large family in Gilmer Co., where they died. Their daughter Mary Jane (Polly) Fling married my great grandfather, David Potter Ayers. My second line is from Margaret Gainer, daughter of Bryan Gainer. She married my 4th great grandfather Samuel Ayers. You have them listed in the 2nd Generation on p. 2 of your descendancy chart. I have a lot of information you have and some you don't have, but I haven't had a chance to check anything except the first page. I notice you don't have anything other than Margaret's marriage, so I'll send my information for her descendants. I hope my chart will come through as well as yours did. It's late now so I'll try to post it over the weekend. Lillian ==================== On Wed, 9 Feb 2000 13:30:14 EST [email protected] writes: > Yes Lil I know what you mean. 1. Capt Newton Poling- Obit
    2. Bridgette Osz
    3. Thursday Aug 3, 1922 Philippi Republican page 8 CAPT. NEWTON POLING GONE We publish the following from the Phillipsburg News, of Phillipsburg, Kans., in reference to the death of a native of this county. Mr. Poling was a brother of A. W. Poling and Mrs. L. W. Shaffer of this place. On Thursday evening, July 20, 1922 Capt. Newton Poling, the oldest man in Phillipsburg, passed away after a very eventful life. He came from a very long lifed family, having a sister, the oldest of the family, who reached the age 91 years and six months and a sister and 3 brothers whose ages averaged 86 years. Mr. Poling lived to the ripe old age of 91 years 4 months and 15 days, thereby carrying out the tradition of the Poling family. He possessed a family tree record showing that his great grand father on his mother's side was born in Ireland in 1722, just two hundred years ago. His father was born in 1787, only eleven years after the declaration of independence was signed. Capt. Poling was born near Philippi, Barbour County, Virginia, now West Virginia, March 5, 1831, the youngest of a family of ten children. December 12, 1850, he was united in marriage to Catherine MARKLEY, also of Barbour County, WV. To this union were born four children, John M. Hannibal S., Henry A. W. Poling and Mrs. Mary McKown. Mrs. Poling have passed away in 1858, Mr. Poling contracted his second marriage at Ripley, WV on April 24, 1861, his bride being Miss Harriet Staats. Their children are Naomi Pettierew, Minnie York, and Oella Bair. On April 12, 1883, he was united in marriage to Vianna Glaze, of Hopkins County, Ohio. No children were born to this union. Mrs. Poling preceded him to the Great beyond ten years ago. Newton Poling volunteered for service on the union side of the great cause of freedom as settled on the battle field. He was first Lieutenant of Co. K, 11th Reg. WV Inf. July 14, 1862. It was not long till the company was surrounded by the confederate forces at night and captain ordered a retreat, but Lieutenant Poling refused to obey the order, rallied the company, charged the enemy and won the engagement. For this he was promoted to a captaincy. He continued to serve his country in this capacity and was present at the surrender of Lee under the now famous apple tree. A few years ago he presented his oldest grandson bearing the name of Poling a watch charm made of the wood of this tree, mounted in silver and gold stars for each engagement. In March 1874 he emigrated from WV to Lowell, Nebr., and from there traveled overland to a farm near Long Island, Kansas. In the spring of 1883 he moved to Phillipsburg, where he since resided, serving his country in the office of Probate Judge for a time. He leaves to mourn his loss on son, three daughters, nineteen grand children and twenty-eight great grand children. together with a host of friends and acquaintances. Funeral services were held in the forum, conducted by L. A. Kerr, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. L. E. Griffith of the Baptist church, and interment was made in Fairview. At the funeral service members of the G.A.R. acted as honorary pall bearers and members of the American Legion representing the Masonic Order, to which the deceased belonged were the active pall bearers.

    2. Lyle: Per Iven Haddix's book, William was most likely the son of John and Mary Taylor Haddox, but no document to support the claim. Iven may have found more since he published his book. If you write me, I will send his email if you do not have it. He connects Mary to the estate of Charles Taylor, and then to John. Possible siblings are Samuel, John, Nimrod, and Elizabeth. This is all from "The Garden of Iven: 16756-1996, published by Iven Gene Haddix of DeSoto MO. You and I have corresponded in the past when you introduced me to Midge.
