My great-great aunt, Elizabeth McWilliams, married Stephen Reed. Elizabeth died in 1852, and Stephen may have married again, unsure at this time. We are guessing that Stephen and Elizabeth had 2 sons, Albert and Abner, possibly twins. We have found these twins living with John and Christina McWilliams, Elizabeth's sister and brother-in-law I believe in the 1860 census. Please if you find any mention of Stephen and Elizabeth, please let me know. Hi listmembers: I am new to the mailing list. I am looking for contacts who are also researching JOHN WILSON, a hotel keeper who was living in Phillipi, Barbour County, WV in 1910. He was living with his son, HAYDEN WILSON, who appears to have stayed on in the area and married (on 1920 census). Also living with him are his daughter WILLIE WILSON OWENS and her husband. John was born and raised in Hardy County, WV, had a hotel in Moorefield with his wife, HANNAH FRANCES BEAN WILSON (Mullin Hotel) before moving to Elkins, Randolph Co., where he also had a hotel. Marriage records often begin when or soon after counties are formed in (W)VA. Same for deeds and wills. Some have been lost in fires, etc. Births and Deaths generally began in 1853. The following list can be helpful in finding when a county was formed. IF you know what counties were partitioned to give a county the second list can be helpful in finding whether earlier records might exist for an area. We have an interesting puzzle here. So far, I don't have any other information on any Elmore REED other than this marriage to Phoebe REED, daughter of Josiah REED, Sr. I have no idea as to his parents or even his birthdate, other than his age given at the time of this marriage being 21 (or born c. 1859). Elmore (whichever or both) is/are probably descended from a REED line other than Josiah. Have you documented his parents yet? You might take a look at Gib REED's post of March 18, 1999 for lines of possible siblings of Josiah REED. I presume when you say you "know" the facts presented as to the descendants of your gr-grandfather, Elmore Vincent REED, that you have soundly documented those facts with primary evidence (birth, death, marriage records, etc.) every step of the way. If not, you might want to go back and do so. I just recently sent for the birth certificate of my husband's grandmother "Anna", who just died last month and who's birthday "everybody always knew" was 1 April 1912. I got back the birth certificate for her sister "Mary", who was supposedly born 10 years later according to the family! I've also found under other surnames cases where someone was called by one name but were in fact named otherwise! Believe me, it pays to document it all. It isn't all that unusual for more than one cousin to have shared the same first name, and that could be the case here. As I mentioned before, there's also always the possibility of errors occurring when someone else does a lookup and transcribes the information. There's also a possibility of an error in the reference book itself, as it's information was transcribed from the County records. Again, the best bet is to go as much as close as possible to original primary sources. Can anyone else out there shed more light on Elmore REED? Don, My family line includes some POLINGs who lived, at least for a time, in Barbour Co, near Phillipi. Phebe Poling (b. 1810 in [now] Barbour Co] married Joseph SHAW about 1833, but they promptly moved to Fairfield Co OH along with (or following) several of Phebe's brothers or cousins: (at least: Richard, Benjamin, & Samuel Poling). Phebe, apparently, was the oldest child of Martin B Poling and Mary Wilson. Any connection? Bert Shaw
