Although well aware of the limitations of both the IGI and AncestryFiles of the LDS collection, I've found they can provide opportunities that were long beyond my arm's reach. Those who are in the notes as having gone "West" may have gone as far as Lewis, Gilmer or Doddridge or to Missouri, Iowa or Oregon. And how can one find a single name among all the possibilities in all of those books or counties? Knowing a couple of Coffman's had gone to Missouri (or was it Iowa) from the Israel Coffman family of Rowe's Town, and of at least one Corley there too, I decided to tackle the search in the LDS files. I wasn't making great progress, but little by little I found some data sets that others had developed as a result of living "out west." At least it was a start even with many un-examined lines. After about exhausting one workers data, I found a juncture with another set of data that went backward about three generations to a Miller family said to be from Grafton with the oldest having been born in Germany in 1807 -- rather late to be of much interest. But I decided perhaps it would help someone working on the local Millers if I pulled out the data and assembled a pedigree. Interesting, but only in an abstract way. Then I tried to find the widow Miller in Taylor census records. No luck. Then tried to find her second husband she had apparently gone to Missouri with. Not a single Oliver in Taylor, and certainly not a John Oliver. What now? There was that one birth place given as near Fellowsville, Barbour Co., WV. For the year given there was not Barbour county, no West Virginia and who knows if there was a Fellowsville in the 1830s. But just maybe... Widow "Synthy Miller." Her first husband was said to have died in 1844. Could she have moved over to Barbour where perhaps that one child was born near Fellowsville, Barbour Co. Ah, a Cynthia Miller, born 1811 (well, that's a surprise, age 39 in August of 1850). And nine children, all the names match and all are the correct age except for one that is 20 rather than expected 21. Looks like we have something. I wonder if there could be an Oliver? Ah, just one Oliver family, headed by John Oliver (15 years older than Cynthia). Wife Elizabeth is still living, but looks pretty good. But he's not only in Barbour, but she is in the heart of Miller country with several recorded the same day and a few a day or two later or earlier. Ah, and there's a child name Levi (her late husband's name). And there's another with a 2 year old Cynthia. And Cynthia has an Andrew and severa others that carry names found in other Miller families in Cove district. Rather than avoiding confusion, perhaps this will be useful to someone working on the local Millers. But I didn't have children for most of Synthy's children that went west with her. Local records show one child having a daughter Virginia born in 1853. And one of the younger daughters is married to a "Carrel." That's a peculiar name for Barbour. Maybe Carle (as the 1850 census spelled the not very common name Carl locally)-- hey, his parents match the only Carle family her (and in the Coves). Perhaps I should go check the data base again. Perhaps I've overlooked some wives or husbands that will give clues to this family and perhaps some that married before leaving. Martin Miller, wife Mary Beavers. How did I miss that one. Hm? And little Virginia's mother was supposed to be Mary. Just one Beaver family in Barbour in 1850. There's no marriage for the first child i the family -- Mary, age 19. And Louie has a marriage date -- 1852, one of those years between the late 1840s and the start of the new record books in 1853. Beaver, that's a relative; of course, his first wife (deceased in 1850) was a Lesher and her maternal grandfather was George Coffman; George was the father of Israel. The circle through the Missouri, S. Sioux, and Sioux City, Iowa workers had returned me to a first cousin of one of the Coffmans I had started the journey with. Just never know where an interesting pathway will lead. How often the roaming has proved to be faster that trying a head on forced search. Oh, you'd like to see the Miller family? Okay, I'll tack it on. Perhaps there is something there for someone working on the Millers and had a dead end path to went nowhere. ============================================================ Descendants of Thomas Thomas 1 Thomas Thomas . +Rebecca ?? ........ 2 Sinthy Thomas b: July 20, 1811 in VA d: January 15, 1884 in Azen, Scotland Co., MO ............ +Levi Miller b: 1807 d: November 4, 1844 in Taylor or Barbour Co., VA m: October 16, 1828 in Prob. Hello, I'm happy to be part of your mailing list. I am originally from St. Marys in Pleasants County, went to West Virginia University and lived in Morgantown for about 23 years. Now we are in Indiana because of my husband's job at GE. I have been working hard to find anything on my gggrandfather, John Ruckman, Sr. He was supposedly born about 1832 in Rockingham County, VA. He eventually married Margaret Sarah Callahan (or Callihan) and they settled in the village of Racoon Run in Harrison County, near Clarksburg, WV. Margaret was born about 1836. When John was around 22 years old, he is listed in the 1850 Census of Barbour County as living with a family named Steaurt (perhaps spelled Stewart now?). At that time the Steaurt family consisted of John Steuart (age 38), Alcy Ann (29), Felix (14), Hugh (12), Margaret (7), Mary (80), John Ruckman (22), and Sarah Ann Steuart (11). I sure hope someone might have a clue about all this. I seem to have run into a wall on this. The Ruckman homeplace where John and Margaret lived was right on the Harrison/Barbour County line. I do not have any information on Margaret Callahan either. Maybe I can find some information on her also. Look forward to hearing from someone. Becky (Ruckman) Boggs
Found some information while surfing for Hovarter/Hovatter that might be a lead for someone working on England. The earliest Weaver member in the file went to Baltimore, MD which makes it unlikely for Barbour connection, but if the Baltimore is creating suggestion it might too be of interest since connected with Steubenville and Pittsburgh. I've reconstructed, but format is wide so it may be more easily read if extracted to a plain text file. The AFN numbers are LDS references.
