Earlier I posted about the marriage of Maria Roney and Jacob Carper. I have been having some serious "perplexitations" about them. Maria was 7 years older than Jacob. I am wondering if she was a Roney widow and married Jacob after in 1849. Any marriages out there in the Winchester Va area between a Roney and a woman named Maria earlier than 1849??? Also cannot find a listing of her in the 1870 census in Berkeley Co.WVA on ancestry.com. I am wondering if she had died and Jacob remarried. This could explain the children winding up in Ohio without parents. I know that the ancestry listings are far from complete- Does anyone out there have access to the 1870 Berkeley co.WVA census that could help me out?? An interesting side note- while reading about the American Revolution I ran into a passage that said Virginia marriages between very old women of means and much younger men were not at all uncommon. The particular passage spoke of a man in his 20's marrying a woman of 83! The newspaper marriage notice stated that she was "a lively old tit". I had a good laugh! thanks- pamela grant
