Burnthouse is located in Ritchie County on Route 47, between Smithville and Weston. From Glenville you can take the Tanner road off route % and it brings you to where Route 47 is . There is where Burnthouse is. It got it's name from an Inn that was there when the settlerss would come from Parkersburg heading east. The Owner had a boy and two slaves that took care of the place. One was a african woman and the other was a man. During that time salesmen would come out From parkersburg and stay there and peddle their wares. Story has it that the boy would kill these salesman for their wares, and then they would take the bodies over into what they call dead mans holler. One night supposedly another boy there saw them cut the head off a salesman setting in front of the fire at the inn. They turned them in and the boy and his father fled and went to Texas I believe. They sold the inn and the slaves. Turns out the girl was in love with the owners boy and one sunday when the people were returning from church the inn was on fire. In the top of it there was a widow watch tower that the slave girl wasa in and dancing. The house burnt down with her in it. They say that every once in a while a flame comes up from the foundation and dances around then floats over to dead mans holler and goes out.. That is all I can remember of the story right now. There is a Goff woman that lives there who has the whole story on it. She wrote a paper about it and we have a camp on our uncles property there with the story . If there is someone in particular your looking for there I may be able to help or find out something for you.. John Adkins
