----- Original Message ----- From: dorothy vasvary To: Virginia ; S. Carolina ; N.Carolina ; Louisiana ; Jefferson ; Georgia ; Autauga County ; Alabama Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2000 3:38 PM Subject: Compilation of Information on Filing System The following is a compilation of information on filing systems received from many persons interested in the subject and is not necessarily a recommendation but is for information only. Many persons contributed to this compilation and they all receive our sincere thanks. We have had many requests, since this pertains to genealogy, to post to the lists so here goes. 1. Genealogy is not safe in only a computer. Person should trust the written word using notebooks, home made books, and other written files. Disasters occur so give your genealogy work away to whoever wants it. Print and handout to other members of the family what you have accumulated. Be sure to backup all your genealogy stored on your computer to floppy disks or other storage means. 2. Many suggested to use Family Tree Maker 6.0 or 7.0 for Windows 95 or 98. Comments suggest that this is an excellent filing system for all your genealogy, but back it up on disks or CDs for protection should your system fail. 3. There were many suggestions to use file folders either under the "My Documents" in Windows using a surname for each folder. If not sure of name as being part of the family, file that name under a "Maybe" folder for further use if necessary. 4. It was suggested by many to use large manila folders for each surname. In each folder are stored other folders filed by first names. Those that you are not sure of are labeled "Maybe". Birth Certificates and other legal papers are filed in each surname folder to which the papers refer. 5. Several suggestions were to use three-ring binders with tab dividers noting the name of the ancestor. Each ancestor represents a generation. Any information on their siblings goes into the generation's tabbed section. Notes and other information goes in a top-loading pocket page and is stored directly behind the person referred to in the binder. A three-ring binder is used for those persons you are not sure belong to the your line. This binder is named the "Unknown" and is tabbed with State names such as, Alabama, Georgia, etc. The binders are easy to take along to research facilities, choosing the family name you are researching. 6. Others suggested purchasing an inexpensive filing cabinet and using hanging file folders in the drawers. A surname section is created in alphabetical order using folder tabs for each family member. Transparent pages are used for small items and stored under the surname. On the outside front of each folder is pasted a form listing the contents of the Surname Folder such as: census research, legal papers, family group sheets, correspondence, e-mail, floppy disks, and other computer information on that surname, etc. A Misc. folder is kept for each surname with names of persons not yet proven to be part of the family. This folder is usually a red folder for easy identification. A section in the cabinet is kelp for forms, books, instructions, catalogs, pictures, computer passwords, CDs, and floppy disk as backups. This is called a Resource drawer. Most persons recommended file folders with pockets on each side, red folders for "Maybes" and three-ring binders stored in bookcases and properly marked with the surname readable. Also, many recommended identifying each male by generation such as 2nd generation, 3rd generation, etc. We hope this information is helpful and that all persons requesting a copy have by now received one. Many, many thanks to all participants. Dorothy Durden
Hello All! I just wanted to share a little excitement with all of you. Tomorrow, at my mother's house, there will be about 6-10 ARTHUR family members that my mother, my aunt(which are ARTHUR'S by birth) & I have never met. My aunt comes down from up north once a yr, so we planned this while she was here. My mother and aunt are the only two children to my grandparents.[Cecil T. ARTHUR & Anna Bertha ACKERMANN Arthur] The ARTHUR side to the family which includes my grandfather, his parents and his siblings have always been such a mystery. My aunt had brought many photographs with her that I have never seen in my life time. Hopefully, someone that will come tomorrow can look through them and let us know who these pictures of the past could be of. I am also going to try and scan some of the pictures before she leaves to up north and put online and maybe some of us ARTHUR family members can connect. I have several questions regarding especially two of the pictures my aunt has brought. (1)One of them is a woman and a man standing next to an ox c! onnected to a covered wagon. The man is wearing what appears to me might be a civil war uniform. (2)The other picture with several people in it has a man wearing a uniform that might be from WWI or WWII - not to sure on the history part with the uniforms, but I do know they don't look like that today. I am hoping with this new information, I can check into another path of my search, which would be the military search. I will keep everyone posted to my search as tomorrow will hopefully bring me to a lot more answers and I'm sure a lot more questions in my genealogy search of the ARTHUR family. Hello All, I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding Richard ARTHUR married to Isabella (?) Arthur listed with son: William, daughter: Kate, and daughter: Maggie. Richard is listed as a Minister. Would anyone have any information to the fact of what kind of Minister or what religion or what church he might have been a minister of? Richard was b. 1849 He is the brother of Mary Margaret ARTHUR b. 1842 d. 1930 My hopes to this question would be to find some answers to my direct line through the church he was a minister to. I'm sure the church would have kept records. Please let me know if anyone has any clues to any of the information listed above regarding any of the names. Richard lived in Webster County to my knowledge. Thank you in advance for any information I receive. Faith blount@digital.net

Hello All! Looking for any information on Mary Margaret ARTHUR d/o William Randolph ARTHUR & Mary Margaret "Mamie" BAXTER Arthur. Siblings include: Nathaniel C., George L, William Anderson & Richard. Also noted: Arters spelling according to some research. Looking for the father of Lee Anderson ARTHUR s/o Mary Margaret ARTHUR. Was she ever married? Any other kids? I am thinking that it is possible that she was close the brother named William Anderson due to the middle name connection with his and her son Lee. Any help, suggestions, comments, rumors or the least bit of info even if you don't think it is relevant will help in my search. On Lee's death certificate is says father unknown. The Webster Co. Court House burned in 1888, so I am having trouble locating a birth certificate. Was he really a illegitimate child or not? Hopefully I will find out one day. Thanks, Faith blount@digital.net
Please be advised that the owner of these pictures is listed at the bottom....please contact her at the e-mail address listed at end of message. I DO NOT HAVE these pictures I subscribe to Rootsweb, this was on the mailing today: My grandfather, John Lloyd Markley, born in 1891, died in 1961, broke horses as a young man in Montana and was very interested in rodeos and riders. He had a small collection of pictures, probably acquired at some rodeo. All of the cards are sepia toned. They are the size of postcards, but the backs are blank or have the logo of the photographer, Anderson Photographer, 785 Broadway, New York, New York. My estimate of the era is between 1890 and 1920. Five of the people are identified in my grandmother's light handwriting on the back of the picture: Jim KID, Billy BULLOCK, Dick JOHNSON, ? BAKER, Buck TAYLOR, all by ANDERSON Photographer. Others are: -- Buck TAYLOR, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, not an Anderson print, says Sarony, copyright 1886 by Napoleon SARONY, New York. -- Eight braves identified on the back as Pawnee, by Anderson -- Eight chiefs in ceremonial dress, identified on back as Chiefs, by Anderson -- Eight men in ceremonial dress, identified on back as Sioux, by Anderson -- Seven men, six in Indian dress, one in a suit, identified on back as Sioux, by Anderson. The man in the suit does not appear to be a full blood Indian. I would be happy to share these pictures with anyone who thinks they are related to the identified men, or might be related to someone in the unidentified groups. We think we can scan them and attach to an e-mail. My best guess is that all of these people were part of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show that traveled around the country and all over Europe. There is a very interesting research project on Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show at the University of Virginia. <http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/HNS/BUFFALOBILL/home.html> Merrie Lee Weiss <merrimac@northlink _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp
Hello all, Looking for any and all suggestions. My ggm, Margaret Elmira Nicol/Nichol, b. in the 1860's, was the daughter of a woman named Hicks from WV, (who supposedly died several days after childbirth) and a man named Nicol/Nichol (possibly John) from "down south"-possibly GA. Family stories sketchy, vague and variable for unknown reasons. Margaret was either born in NJ or brought here at an unknown age by her father who was supposedly a CW soldier. He was (supposedly) either killed in battle, executed as a spy for the north or died during the war. Margaret was raised in the Morris County NJ area by an unknown family (possibly Vanderhoofs or Jeffreys), m. William J. Ayres prior to 1886 and had children: Lovdy Madge; Clara; Mulford William; Hazel; Ivan Therle or Thurwood.;Harriet Elmira; Mildred Amelia; Robert Jackson; Merle Elizabeth; Nelson Joseph. The only, albeit remote, possibility of making a family connection is the fact that Margaret, William and children used to visit he! r family, including a cousin named Louise (?Hicks) in Moundsville and possibly Wheeling in the early 1900's. Does anything seem to "fit in" with anyone out there?
Could anyone tell me if there is an online listing of people buried in the Coal City Community Church Cemetery in Coal City, WV? It's in Raleigh Cnty., WV If not online how I might find this info? Thanks in advance Tina
