    1. [WVA] FRANCES MAE NICOLES, 1946 BUCKHANNON
    2. I am new to list as I am searching for a NICOLES family in the Buckhannon area. In checking recent phone directories I only find two people with this name (spelled N-I-C-O-L-E-S). Frances Mae Nicoles was born about 1946 in either Buckhannon or the surrounding area. She was in Hartford, Connecticut in 1968, probably going to school (she is listed on the city directory as living in at an address full of medical students). After 1968, I do not know where she went or if she married and to whom. It is important that I find her. If you have the availability to locate her actual birth date, that would certainly narrow down the search. I do not live close to WVirginia, so searching in person is not an option. If you know of any Nicoles families in the area, or if someone can check yearbooks for Buckhannon, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Fredrick Nicoles

    1. [WVA] Gleason/Cunningham connection
    2. Elizabeth Gleason, widow of John Gleason, was living in WV and is shown in the 1880 census there. Also in the home is a William Cunningham, age 50. In the 1870 VA census Elizabeth is there -- John having died in 1869. BUT William Cunningham is also there, both in the Amsterdam district of Botetourt County. William is shown as age 40 and lived in the same house with others named Cunningham: Mary E (F), age 46; Rose L. (F), age 15; Ann J., (F), age 13; James M. (M), age 8. Does anyone know anything about this family? In the 1900 Kanawha Co., WV census, Brownstown Precinct, William is living there and is shown as being born, Feb. 1830. He was married and had been for 9 years (ca. 1891). He was married to Elizabeth Cunningham, b. Jan 1861. This cannot be my Elizabeth since she was b.1832/33. But also in that family are Gleasons: John Gleason, age 28; William Gleason, age 13; and ____ Gleason, age 9. Each of their relationships to William is shown as "stepson". Does anyone have a thread which when pulled will unravel or begin to unravel this mixed up affair? I will so much appreciate any help. Thank you and my blessings, Love and Peace Ethel Adams Peace, EthlSAdams@aol.com Researching: Adams, Baker, Basham, Coleman, Ferrell, Gleason, McNairy, Oswalt, Pixley, Rogers, Runnells, Stone, Stover, Weaver

    1. [WVA] (no subject)
    2. I'll try to recap as briefly as I can: According to my present information: My grandmother was JESSICA VIRGINIA GLEASON who wasdaughter to JOHN GLEASON and ELIZABETH MOORE. This was in Botetourt Co., VA. The plot thickens: We can find absolutely nothing in the line of birth or death for Jessica. John Gleason whom we have always thought was her father died in 1869. This we know is true. We have always thought Jessica was born about 1870 so thought she may have been born AFTER her father's death. That happens. However: her mother, Elizabeth Gleason moves to WV at some point and is shown on the 1880 census in WV as being a widow. At this time there is a Robert, age 1 in the household and an Elizabeth, b. about 1873. There is also a William Cunningham, age 50 living in the household. Is he living "with" Elizabeth or is he a hired hand? He was born in VA and did he come to WV with her? The 1900 WV census shows Jessica as Jessacha and states she was born May 1872. Clearly if this is true, John Gleason cannot be her father! But WHO is she and WHERE did she come from? We are stumped. Any clues? 1. [WVA] Maps of WV...
    2. Patsy McDuffie
    3. Is there a place where you can order survey maps? In tracing my family line, it has become necessary to identify the rivers they lived on the determine their locations. There are quite a few in several different townships in different counties that I need to map. I bought Dr. Hively's book on plotting your ancestor's location through maps but am not ready for that yet. In his book he tells you how to take the detail description of the deeds and draw out the land where he lived. It is possible to recreate a whole community if one had the desire to do it. Very timely project but very interesting. Dr. Hively has done several townships in York Co. PA. I just need a good map of specific locations of townships in counties of WV. I like to Topo Zone maps but they limit the area you can view and are not transferable to my graphic program to print them. The Ginis maps are not quite detailed enough. I think I'll probably have to buy these maps so if you know of a place, please reply. You all have been most helpful and I do appreciate it. 1. [WVA] WV MCCALLISTER Civil War KIA?
    2. David J. McCallister
    3. One of the mysteries in my line is what happened to Richard McCallister of Putnam (part that is now Lincoln Co?) WV during the civil war. He was last seen on the 1860 Cabell County census at age 24 with wife Nancy. He then joined Gen Floyd's Virginia State Line Brigade. Was he killed in action or died as a POW? This unit was reported known as a "bunch of thugs" and were detested in WV after the war. His brother Perry also enlisted in Floyd's brigade and hid out in Lawrence Co KY after the war (1870 census) and waited until things cooled down before returning home. Some possible Richard McCallisters that could be him are: Richard T. McAllister 10th light arty. battery co D Enl. 3/11/62 McAlister, Richard Bat H 1st Reg Ref# WDC 11,5 McAlister, Richard (J.?) Bat D 10th Batt Ref# WDC 64,5 McAllister, R. Co. H 56th Reg Ref# V6, p. 241 McAllister, R. F. Co. D 10th Reg Ref# V1, p. 515 McAllister, R. (J.?) Bat D 10th Batt Ref# V18, p. 25 McAllister, Richard Southall's Bat Ref# V19, p. 41 "WDC" noted on some cards refers to the War Department Confederate material which is in the National Archives. References to volume numbers and page numbers are to the bound volumes which have been microfilmed and are at LVA. Anyone have any ideas? Regards, David McCallister mccallister1@home.com

    1. [WVA] RINGER Surname in various states and counties
    2. Dereck Dietz
    3. I'm trying to flesh out some RINGER information and try to open up some currently dead ends. I have two brothers, sons of a John RINGER (about 1723 - about 1789) married to an Anna Mary NISS/Anna Marie NYCE (1730 to about 1791) who both married 5th Great Aunts of mine and daughters of a Johann Jost DIETZ (1734 - ca 1799) and Anna Catherine SCHNEIDER (1737 - ?). Johann Adam RINGER (1756-1810) married Margaret DIETZ (ca 1755 - before 1829) 1781 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. His brother, George RINGER (ca 1772 - ca 1832) married Ann Elisabeth DIETZ (1766 - ca 1844) circa 1793 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. I have quite a number of names where the information stops at various points and places in time and I would like to gather as much information on my RINGER relatives as possible. I have been able to trace their migration paths through the following states and counties: Ohio Guernsey County Ross County Tuscarawas County Vinton County Pennsylvania Bedford County Fayette County Montgomery County Somerset County Virginia/West Virginia Monongalia County Preston County If you have any RINGER lines, or lines related to the RINGER surname, in or around any of the above counties I would really like to hear from you so we can compare names and see if there is a connection. Thanks very much. Dereck L. Dietz dietzdl@ameritech.net

    1. [WVA] New Postings to Northern Neck Families
    2. Virginia Hamrick
    3. We have posted 12 additional pages of the Northumberland Court Order Book 1678-99. Adam Garratt is given an IOU by the County for hosting local men 'up in arms to suppress the Rebels (Bacon's)'. Thomas Robbins and Richard Hales are detained as runaways and returned to Maryland. County residents are ordered to return to the Robert "The Great Man" of the Indian Town of Wicomico who will return them to their Indian owners. The high cost of courtship is demonstrated in the Case of Edward Jones vs. The County for a Breach of the Peace. 1. [WVA] Harry Thomas
    2. Kim
    3. I'm trying to find information on my G-Grandfather Harry or Henry Thomas. The only positive information I have is that he resided in Crum (Wayne Co.), Wv in 1915 at the time of my Grandmothers birth. Harry was married to Elsie. I remember my mother telling me that Elsie's mother was Polly Wilson, so I'm assuming Wilson would be Elsie's maiden name.
