    1. [WVA] Places to Stay in WV
    2. Huyers
    3. Hello list members. Some of you already know that I've been planning a trip to central WV...if I could make it. Well, the day of departure is tomorrow and I have no choice but to go because I have to take my son to Conservation Camp in Webster Springs on Monday by Noon and I have to pick him up on Friday. Since I haven't been in the central part of the state in 18 years, other than a drive through on I-79 when moving; and since if I tried to do two quick turn-around trips to take and fetch him, my time in between would only be trying to recover physically for the 2nd trip, I figure it's my "golden opportunity" to finally get to do some hardcore hands-on research...as much as my body will tolerate! I expect to visit with an aunt in Gassaway for at least a night or two. Visiting her was the primary purpose of my last trip 18 years ago and she has offered that I stay with her the entire week. I'm a little concerned about the burden that may place on her for that long though because of her age and health...and my health concerns. Quite frankly, at nearly twice my age, I think she's in better physical shape than me...but that isn't necessarily good enough to have someone in my condition around for a full week, so I'd like to be prepared to go and stay elsewhere part of the week if it appears to be in one or both of our best interests. In that event, I will be armed with a laptop full of all of my gen files (database, email, and text files) so I can take my research in any direction in the broadly general area around central WV or Webster Springs areas. To that end, I would greatly appreciate any recommendations you may have in the region as a place to stay...preferably someplace cozy/homey and convenient with "value for dollar"...maybe even with a fridge and microwave available so I won't have to eat out all the time and can spend more on photos and documentation. Since I am not the least bit adequately prepared or organized (not having been able to review my files in about 7 months now), nor do I know how much time I'll "hang out" with my aunt, I'm not at all sure of where I'll end up researching or for how long; so your recommendations in that regard would also be appreciated...especially along the line of "If you can make it to only one place in the region, you should go ....". I have some connection or another to just about every county in WV. I know I won't make it everywhere I'd like and I know my physical limitations will make it slower than for most to get things done...but I'm in that virtual "now or maybe never" place and will just have to do what I can do. If anyone is in need of a particular look-up in one of the likely counties, I'll be happy to do it if at all possible but I can't guarantee I'll even get there. I'll let everyone know how it all went when I get back. Thanks much everyone. Please send your responses to me individually, unless there are a number of others who request answers to the list. Diane p.s. Restaurant recommendations also appreciated.

    1. [WVA] Parents of ELI WINTERS b. 1803, Jefferson Co., OH
    2. margaret ruth shank
    3. Just before she died in March, my mother told me she had learned ( but didn't tell me WHERE) that our WINTERS family who are documented in Jefferson Co., OH wiwth the birth of my 3ggrandfather ELI b. 14 March 1803 had been "...squires in VA who lost their money and moved to OH" As I feel I have exhausted all the Abraham WINTER/WINTERS born in Pa between 1760-80, I am now trying to check out her "hypothesis" that the family originated in VA/WVA. In the 1820 census for Jefferson Co., OH ( the first) an ABRAHAM WINTERS is listed with a son who would have been older than Eli, 2 sons Eli's age, and three under 10 years. In the 1830 census, the person listed just above Eli's household ( Eli m. Annis ANDREWS b. 1801 Chester, PA on 2/1/1821 in Jefferson Co) is an abbreviation for W'm or Ab'm. We believe Eli's father was Abraham as he and Annis named their second son ( b. 1822) as Abraham, the first son being James, probably for her father. In Jefferson Co in 1805, an Abraham WINTERS was paid $1 for a grey woilf skin. In 1826, Abraham Sr and Jr were founding members of a "Christian" Church .. no denomination given. By 1840, Eli and Annis were in Crawford Co., OH where she died in 1879 and he in 1883/4. Some of the maternal lines marrying into this family, besides Annis Andrews, the daughter of James and Margaret Clendennin, were Elarton/Allerton ( John, William, Joseph) and Crites. Thank you all in advance for any time you can give in searching your databases and/or in offering me further suggestions for research. Margaret Shank ( Arvada, CO)

    2. Carl Ward
    3. Hi folks, I've just recently updated my family tree webpages for my WARD,MAXSON,ENO,MORGAN and BURKE,KESSLER,VERMILLION family lines (and many more, of course). The web address for the home page is: <http://members.home.net/carlwward1/ward_genealogy.html> (NOTE: Between the word "ward" and "genealogy", there's an underscore character "_" Sometimes that's a little hard to see if you're re-typing that internet address.) I might add that on my home page you can find an index of all the names in my family tree (on the web pages) and a surname list as well. All family pages have links that you can click on to proceed to the children or parents (if known). My new email address is also on the home page. Would sure appreciate hearing from anyone that might find a connection. Thanks, Carl WARD

    1. [WVA] New Posting Northern Neck Families
    2. Virginia Hamrick
    3. We have posted 17 additional pages of the Northumberland Court Order Book 1678-99. Some of the interesting records are: John Fisher's Bills of Exchange (which he drew for the partial purchase of the Ship *Constant Matthews* of London Derry) are protested and returned to the Court for collection. The costs of protested bills are quite punitive: four pounds 15 shillings sterling on a 30 pound Bill of Exchange.(i.e. ca. 16%) plus the costs of the Court itself. A 'complete' list of Tithables is provided on pages 037 [ key name CHARLES SHIRLY] and 038 [key name GEORGE PICKINS] The various bailiwicks of Constables in the County are redrawn and ordered recorded on page 32 [key name: JOHN HUGHLETT, Jr.] The infamous "Capt WARD" [key name WILLIAM WOODGATE] is order flogged for stealing 'diverse small things' from THOMAS WINTER, and, for his 'many robberies' in Maryland, delivered to Col. NICHOLAS SPENCER for transfer to Maryland authorities 'if thought convenient.' GEORGE KNIGHT, the Miller, wins a Suit for assault and battery upon his wife by RICHARD PEMBERTON, but receives the "Kings Penny" for damages.
