Many of the early families of West Virginia came from the Northern Neck. We believe those families were present in many of the source records beginning in the late 1600-1700's, that we are currently transcribing. Since we post new material to this database frequently, we instituted a very successful Alert System that informs you by e-mail of the appearance of any surnames that are of particular interest in your research. After a thorough and successful six-month test of this system, we now invite you to participate in the TOP10 Alert. To do this go to: http://www.northernneckfmailies.com Then go to the "TOP10 Subscription Form" and follow the instructions. You may then visit our Website and do a free "Surname Search" for your TOP10 names that we alerted you to as well as other surnames in the Northern Neck. We will also advise you where you may view a précis of the pages, how to obtain the transcribed page, how to find out how you may receive a graphic image of the actual court record from which the transcript was made and all of this can be delivered to you by e-mail. Please do not respond to the "List" as it will overburden it, but enter the Surnames that you are researching in the form 'TOP10 Alert Subscription Form" on http://www.northernneckfamilies.com Happy Hunting. ___________________________________ Virginia Hamrick Association of Archival Transcribers mailto:virginiah@reflexnet.net http://www.northernneckfamilies.com

I did a fast www.google.com search on "Neal Plantation" and this is all I found aside from http://www.coastalconnections.com/wills-c.html which has some Neale in NC, Abstract of Wills Manuscript Department Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill SOUTHERN HISTORICAL COLLECTION #4370 NEAL FAMILY PAPERS Inventory http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/n/Neal_Family Neal, Aaron, d. 1869. INTRODUCTIONBiographical Note The two generations of the Neal family prominent in these papers lived between 1816 and 1915. Principal figures in the earlier generation included Moses, James, John, Aaron, and Mary (Timberlake), children of Moses Neal (d. pre-1830), planter of Franklin County, N.C. Other individuals who figure in the earlier portion of these papers are Aaron's wife, Elizabeth Fox; her relatives (probably siblings) Burrell, Robert, Richard, Martha, and William Fox; Richard Timberlake (Mary Neal's husband); and the slaves Sim Neal and Foxes Peney. In the 1820s, James and John Neal moved west, first to Alabama, then to Tennessee, to buy land and establish cotton plantations. Their sister Mary Timberlake and her family soon followed. By the 1830s, Burrell, Richard, Robert, and William Fox were in Mississippi setting up plantations, and their sister Martha and her family were homesteading in Tennessee. Aaron Neal (?-1869) remained on the family plantation with his mother. He later married Elizabeth Fox. Moses Neal was a merchant (and a bachelor) in Williamsboro (Granville County), N.C., until his death in 1853. The Neals, Foxes, and Timberlakes were all slave-owning planter families of at least moderate wealth. Those who went west all took slaves with them and had the cash to buy good farm land. A check of the Population and Slave Schedules of the Federal Census for Franklin County revealed that Aaron Neal in 1860 had real estate worth $15,210 and personal property worth $20,402, and was the owner of 18 slaves. Members of the second generation of Neals represented in these papers are the children of Aaron Neal, their spouses, and a few friends. The 1860 Federal Census for Franklin County listed Aaron's children as Transbry C. (20, male), Temperance B. (17), Mary E. (14), Lavinia (11), Moses (8), Charles I. (5), and Mit (2, female). Aaron had two older sons living away from home in 1860, Nathan (24), and James (26). Nathan was a student at the University of North Carolina in 1857, and during the Civil War worked in Alabama as a railroad construction engineer. His brother Transbry served in the Confederate Army in Virginia. After the war, Transbry returned to the family farm near Louisburg, but Nathan went west and settled in Waxahachie, Tex., (about 30 miles south of Dallas) where he remained until his death. Nathan eventually married and raised a son, Garrett, who joined his father in the land surveying business. Aaron Neal died in 1869, and his wife apparently died earlier. The 1870 Federal Census for Franklin County listed Transbry Neal, age 30, as head of household with the following family members (all his siblings): Temperance (26), Lavinia (21), Moses (17), Charles (15), and Stilla ? (10). The Civil War had nearly impoverished the Neal family: the 1870 census listed Transbry's real estate as worth $5000, and his personal estate $300. Abstract: Members of the Neal family were planters, businessmen, and farmers in Franklin, N.C.; Fayette and Henderson counties, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Hinds County, Miss.; Waxahachie, Tex.; and other areas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among them was Aaron Neal of Franklin County, N.C., who died in 1869. Correspondence, and financial, legal, and other papers of Aaron Neal, his siblings, in-laws, and children, and other members of the Neal family. Most of the correspondence relates to the antebellum era and consists primarily of letters from family members in the Old Southwest that describe to relatives in North Carolina the everyday problems associated with moving west, buying land and slaves, and establishing profitable cotton plantations. There are also letters, 1857, to and from Nathan Neal, a student at the University of North Carolina. There are twelve letters from the Civil War years that describe camp life and combat experiences, mainly in the Virginia theater. Most postbellum letters pertain to late nineteenth-century farm life in North Carolina and to small-town life in Texas. Financial, legal, and other items date from both before and after the Civil War. I am still hunting for my elusive Barnhart ancestors -- specifically the parents of my ggg grandfather James Barnhart. James Barnhart married Anna ROSOLY on 4 April 1850 in Jackson County, VA/WV, according to Jackson County marriage records. While recently perusing Jackson County, VA/WV death records, transcribed by Linda Murdock, I found the following new information: BARNHART, Sarah 12/26/1873 87y. Parents are Jacob & Hannah Love. Born PA. Sarah BARNHART is found living next door to my ggg grandfather James BARNHART in 1860 Jackson County, VA/WV. Sarah is listed as a 66-year-old living in the household of Jesse HANSHAW & his wife Elizabeth. Sarah BARNHART's place of birth is listed as PA. My ggg grandfather James BARNHART's place of birth in the same census is also given as PA. The age in Sarah BARNHART's death record does not correlate with the age given in 1860 census records. She is 66 according to 1860 census data. So she should be circa 79 at the time of death instead of the 87 given in the death record. But I've found that ages in census records, death records, etc. aren't always reliable. (Seems that vanity was sometimes a major factor.) Also found in Jackson County death records is the following report of my ggg grandfather's death: Barnhart, James died 9/17/1902, 74y 11 months 20 days, died Goldtown, parents H & S Barnhart Given the proximity of the HANSHAW residence to my ggg grandfather James BARNHART's house, I am lead to believe that Sarah BARNHART may be the mother-in-law of Jesse HANSHAW, mother of James BARNHART & therefore the "S" of H & S BARNHART, who are listed as the parents of my ggg grandfather in Jackson County death records. Does anyone have a copy of the 1860 Jackson County, VA/WV Census that lists the relationship of Sarah BARNHART to head of household Jesse HANSHAW? Does anyone have in their records a PA nuptial between Sarah LOVE, d/o Jacob & Hannah LOVE, & a Mr. H______ BARNHART? Thank you in advance for any guidance or information. Thank you also for your patience in this matter. I look forward to reading your E-mails & hopefully learning the answers. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
----- Original Message ----- From: Donald Grant To: RONEY-L@rootsweb.com Cc: WVBERKEL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 12:11 PM Subject: MARIA RONEY Hello Again! Earlier I posted about the marriage of Maria Roney and Jacob Carper. I have been having some serious "perplexitations" about them. Maria was 7 years older than Jacob. I am wondering if she was a Roney widow and married Jacob after in 1849. Any marriages out there in the Winchester Va area between a Roney and a woman named Maria earlier than 1849??? Also cannot find a listing of her in the 1870 census in Berkeley Co.WVA on ancestry.com. I am wondering if she had died and Jacob remarried. This could explain the children winding up in Ohio without parents. I know that the ancestry listings are far from complete- Does anyone out there have access to the 1870 Berkeley co.WVA census that could help me out?? An interesting side note- while reading about the American Revolution I ran into a passage that said Virginia marriages between very old women of means and much younger men were not at all uncommon. The particular passage spoke of a man in his 20's marrying a woman of 83! The newspaper marriage notice stated that she was "a lively old tit". I had a good laugh! thanks- pamela grant
----- Original Message ----- From: Donald Grant To: WVBERKEL-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 9:23 AM Subject: Berkeley Co. Carpers Hello to all! Up till now I have only been 'almost certain' that my GGGrandparents were JACOB CARPER & MARIA RONEY m,14 AUG 1849 in Berkeley Co.This has now been confirmed by death certificate and family interview!! As of the 1860 census they show 3 sons- James V./John D./Jacob A. ( I have family hearsay -at this point- of 2 more, Mary and Joshua) It took 2 sessions with an elderly aunt to hit the motherload. I have learned that one talk just isn't enough. Apparently the first talk began to open the door to memories long forgotten and by the second talk they had time to filter up. So dont give up after just one family interview!! She also remembered that the bible buried with my grandmother was not THE family bible- another living relative has it! Can you imagine burying a bible like that though?? At this point I am very suspicious that Carper/Wolfersberg and Carper/Sharff are connected to my people. They are in place in Berkeley Co at the right time. any and all information about these folks woudl be greatly appreciated. I have been told that the Carpers were notoriously bad at keeping records and most of the information we have is due to other sides of the family keeping them! I have good information concerning the eventual move (between the civil war and 1880) to Ohio of Jacob and Maria's children. I feel that some family from Berkeley co. must have already been in place in Ohio to receive the children because my aunt says they moved without the parents. Jacob A. was married in Ohio in 1880- one of his daughters is my grandmother. should anyone be interested- my email is sundog01@home.com thanks- and sorry this was such a long post - but I wanted to be sure of my stuff before asking for help. Henry Hovatter was my gggrandfather. His son Elias was the father of my grandfather, Francis Clyde Hovatter. My father, Clyde Hovatter, is the fourth of twelve children. Elias was married to Alice Bertha Cozad. Henry deserted his family and went to Arkansas, where he took another wife and fathered other children. Elias was taken in by Henry's brother, David. Would be happy to correspond and find other connections. Debbie Larkins
