No new policy at rootsweb it is the combo of AOL and my computer. Computer heats up and WAOL goes beserk and does very very strange things to my access to the WWW. Awesome experience, I tried 8 different URL and got drop kicked to Kansas and no Toto to make it better ..... One woman did have a similar problem and another had a lovely suggestion about the browser (get a different one), hehe, but .... Lord, it has been a long year so far. Thanx, folks, I didn't have any idea what was going on. Suz G
I was going to do a search at the www.rootsweb.com, and ..... 1. nothing except they wanted to download a file 2. I can't use the file 3. I can't get into www.rootsweb.com 4. I have 5-6 useless files 5. and if I -- an AOL user -- hit the x box, which shuts that screen, AOL kicks me out of my entire system all the way back to Windows95 and I'm no longer online. Does anyone know what's going on?? Suz G

His name....good question! :) He has three marriage records...can't find the first one...but have found the next two. 1. In his first marriage record from Doddridge Co. WV on Sept. 12, 1861 he is listed as David Jones, age 45, widower, of Ohio, son of George and Margaret Jones. married to E.A. Overfield, age 33, single, of Harrison Co. VA, dau. of Martin Overfield. 2. In his second marriage record of Doddridge Co. WV on Sept. 13, 1861 he is listed as William S. Jones, age 45, widower, of ohio, son of George and Margaret Jones. married to E.A. Overfield, age 33, single, of Harrison Co. VA, dau. of Martin Overfield. Obviously one of these marriage records was recorded incorrectly but I do not know which one is which. I do believe the two had children in Doddridge Co. WV.... I found in the Doddridge Co. WV birth records a Mary F. Jones born to a David and E.Jones in 1861....could this be them? another Jones baby also born to this David and E. sometime later. It is then said that he and wife Elizabeth Ann Overfield (Betsey?) went back to OHIO...but where & when I do not know. Thanks Julie ______________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html

Many, many people came to Doddridge County from Monroe and Belmont Counties in Ohio. If you are looking for your David and Elizabeth Overfield JONES in that state, those would probably be good counties to start in. I see the Overfield family in Doddridge County in the 1850 census. Elizabeth seems to have a brother named William S., who was 6 at the time -- though I don't see what that would have to do with the marriage record you questioned. Probably a coincidence. Even by 1861, William S. Overfield would have been only 17 -- not likely to have been a bond signer or marriage witness? Mary Ann Wamsley

Hello everyone. (: I am writing to the list hoping to find information for my dad, Frank Cyphers. He was raised around War, West Virginia. He would like to find some of the Stevenson family members and asked that I try through this list. The names of some of the folks he would like to find are: George, Geraldine, Evie Stevenson and/or their family. He said that they may be living in or around Tampa, Florida now - but that they knew each other while growing up in West Virginia. Would anyone happen to know them or how to get in touch with them, etc.? I'd appreciate any help on dad's behalf. (: Thanks so much! Benita Cyphers
This is the former "insane asylum" at Weston, WV: William R Sharpe Jr Hospital Weston, WV 26452 (304) 269-1210 I hear from someone on another list that there was supposedly another asylum at Fairmont, WV. If so, I suspect that one may have later been changed to Fairmont Emergency Hospital and then Fairmont General Hospital. There may have been other possible hospital locations. Strict laws governing the release of psychiatric records make it impossible for anyone to simply view lists of patients, regardless of how old the records are. In fact, even if you know the name of the patient, they are not allowed to even confirm the fact he was ever there unless you can present an overwhelming reason of necessity to a Judge of the Circuit Court and get a Court Order. If these records are important to you (for family medical history), you'll have to narrow down the name of the patient first and then file a Petition with the Court. I've already been through this (successfully) and will be glad to help out (privately) if you wish. Having no idea of the source of the quote you offered about the patient you seek, I'd like to offer two thoughts for everyone when you hear reports of an ancestor that was institutionalized in an "insane" asylum: 1. Keep in mind how little was known in the field of psychiatry back then, and that many people were "put away" for a wide variety of reasons which may or may not have been linked to actual mental illness...many which (for better or worse) would not be institutionalized today. (Obviously, your ggg-uncle, a physician, didn't become "insane" just from the use of tobacco...yet the quote would indicate he may have had a serious problem.) 2. In light of today's knowledge in the field of psychiatry, a history of mental illness in a family a century ago may explain the various family members since then who may never have been declared mentally ill but have had "significant difficulties" living their lives successfully. It's unfortunate that the same laws that are meant to protect individuals and relations from the stigmas and repurcussions associated with mental illness (still present, though not as bad today) make it so difficult for descendants to have a vital part of their family medical history...especially with the knowledge that many mental illnesses can be hereditary, and many can also be successfully treated. Good Luck. Diane John Ballard wrote: > Does anyone know where the 19th-Century records of Weston Asylum are > kept? Does anyone know where the 19th-Century records of Weston Asylum are kept? Looking for surname PELL the following information and data can be found in: VIRGINIA Northern Neck Land Grants Volume 111 1775-1800 Compiled by Gertrude E. GRAY Accordinding to the data compiled by Gertrude E. GRAY the following was found. Vol. 111, pg. 80, "T-232: Henry Hardman 164 A. (18 Sep 1780) in Hampshire Co. on Stoney Run of Mill Cr. adj. William Pell. 6 Mar 1789" Vol. 111, 183 "W-597: T.W. 9020=16 Nov 1781 Robert Williams asne. of William Pell 100 A.(25 Oct 1792) in Hampshire Co. adj. Robert Allen, Thomas Buffington, Half Mile Run of Cabbin Run. 23 Sept 1795 This is all I found on PELL in all of the books. I know it doesn't seem like much but it does give a place to look for more and if you want complete copies of the documents which gives more detail that isn't in the book, they can be obtained by writing to the address the book gives with the following information: "Copies of the original grants may be secured from the Virginia State Library. Specify the nname of collection, name of grantee, volume and page number. Send a self addressed, stamped envelope for a price quote, limiting requests to two items per letter. Do notinclude money with orders. Write to: Virginia State Library, Capitol Square, Richmond, Virginia 23219-3491. The originals have more data not included in these excerpts from the original. I hope this helps a little at least. Thank you, Cathy Dorson
