Need help with my elusive root: Known by the family as Henry Johile THOMPSON, but according to records used "Joseph" as an adult. Family tradition has that he was adopted and/or kidnapped and that's why we don't know his parents. the other family name to which he was tied was SHREWSBURY or ASBURY. He is said to be the cousin of Levi THOMPSON, son of Harvey THOMPSON and Matilda THOMPSON. Johile and Levi married sisters Margaret Tildy and Catherine DUDLEY. Johile was born on 14 May 1844 in Virginia. He was a Farmer in 1880 in Beaver Pond District, Mercer County, West Virginia. He owned 50 acres on 11 Oct 1905 in Ingleside, Mercer County, West Virginia. He resided at Ritchie Street in 1910 in Princeton, Mercer County, West Virginia and was a Wagoner, owning his own business. He died on 1 Jul 1914. He was buried in Mt. Horeb Cemetery, Princeton, Mercer County, West Virginia. He was married to Margaret Tildy DUDLEY in 1866. On the 1860 Census in 68th District, Wythe County, Virginia there are a Johili and Alexander THOMPSON working as farm laborers for Harmon NEWBERY. There are also a couple of Henry's in Wythe Co. about that time. No leads have panned out yet. Looking for any information that might be helpful. I'm trying to find out what happened to Nancy Jane WRIGHT. Nancy Jane WRIGHT was born about 1839 in Campbell County, Virginia. she was the daughter of Wilson M. WRIGHT and Elizabeth MAYBERRY. She was on the 1850 Census in Appomattox County, Virginia. She was in the 1870 and 1880 Census in Mercer County, West Virginia. She was also known as Mannie. On 29 Apr 1869 she married Lewis Abnor DUNAGAN from Surry Co. NC. She is listed as "Nancy J. MOSLEY, 30 yrs, widowed." I have no idea who the first husband was. Family tradition says they had one child possibly named Will who died also. She had one child with Lewis, Rosa Belle DUNAGAN who was born on 2 Jul 1870 in Mercer County, West Virginia. She married James Wilson JONES on 5 Aug 1886 in Mercer County, West Virginia. But in 1882 Lewis married Eliza WHITTAKER and Lewis is listed as a widowed. I can find no record about Nancy's death, searched teh Mercer co. court records myself, and I've spoken with some descendents of Lewis and Eliza to no avail. Anyone know anything? I am looking for the parents of James GARRETSON. They are John GARRETSON and Virginia (Surname unknown). James GARRETSON was born on 22 May 1798 in Virginia. He married Barbara (Surname unknown), and after her death married Lucretia BLANKENSHIP. Zurella Svillia GARRISON (da of Barbara) was born on 24 Dec 1835 in Tazewell County, Virginia. She appeared on the Census in Mercer County, Virginia from 1850 to 1900. She married Elisha Pluckett JONES on 20 Jan 1859in Tazewell Co., VA. She was a Farmer in 1900. trying to find any information at all on theodotia ann farrel born in baltimoreor charleston, w. virgin in 1852. I believe her father was nelson farell. no info on the mom. she married in 1870 in meigs co, ohio to joseph willliam stanneart (staneart). they lived in bedford twp until 1877-1878. moved to ottawa kansas. both are buried at blackburn, oklahoma. he died in 1899 and she died in 1935. Bob, According to "The Handy Book for Genealogists": Harrison Co., WV County Clerk has birth records beginning in 1853. (Of course back in the 1700s it was part of VA -- WV didn't become a state until 1863.) They would have been sporadic at best back then because it was not a law for births or deaths to be recorded. The law didn't take effect until 1917, but even then it wasn't fully complied with until probably sometime in the 1920s. I think you're out of luck on this request -- unless maybe you can find someone who has a Family Bible (if there was one). Sorry.
