Hi, I'm trying to help an oil company find descendents of Samuel L. Evey, m. Virginia (Jenny McMackin). He was b. 1851 in Mineral County, and d.1905. His children were Alonzo, Clara and Ellie May. They have a pretty nice genealogy of this family through all their research, they just can't find descendents. Apparently there is land of his that this company has possession of that was used for the Mineral Rights. If no descendents turn up, it will be sold for the taxes. I am aware that the counties mentioned in my note were not part of Va at that time, but Samuel was born about 1814. At that time, the area now known as West Virginia was still a part of the state of Virginia. However the fact that Thomas was born in 1854 and stated on at least one Census that he was born in VA clouds the issue. Even in the 1900 and 1920 Census Thomas is still saying his father was born in VA. However, that does not mean that he (Samuel) died in VA - that is just a theory, based on the fact that he never shows his head that we can find, after his son's birth in 1854 - and the fact that Thomas says that he (Thomas) was born in VA also. > Also, according to Ann Fenley in The Ohio Open Records Law and Genealogy > (Dayton, Ohio: Ohio Connection, 1989) the two types of death records known to > be in existence before 1867 are records of cholera deaths, registered during > some epidemics and veterans deaths. Pat do you know where I might obtain this in a book? I live in TX and would be willing to look it up, if it were available. If it were not extremely expensive, I would even consider buying it. We are truly desparate to get some trace on this section of our family tree. I personally have been looking for over ten years. I have broken down several other walls, but this one is the absolute immovable one. I am starting to have nightmares about Sam & Dee (Samuel and Delilah Figley Dixon). <gggg> I also want to thank each and everyone of you for your responses, both on the list and privately. There are no dumb answers - because each and everyone of them have happened to someone at some time. I appreciate all the thought that your answers have exhibited. Thank you all for trying to help me. Onward and upward - I now have some clues to follow up on and ideas to check out. Thanks again for being such a great list. Hello to all!! Does anyone have any info on the Westall/Bane families in the 1790 through 1824 time frame in the Harrison Co., Clarksburg general areas. I am searching for a marriage between Mary Hester Westall b ca. 1792 and Alexander Bane b ca. 1781. I believe they married on Mar 20, 1820 in Brooke Co. Mary Hester may have gone by her middle name Hester? Info on a Bane marrying a Hester Unknown would be appreciated also. Any info, even if it does not seem relevant would be appreciated. :-) A long search but no results. Bob Westall
Sandy, Yes, I remember that all that was Virginia back then, but if I remember correctly the time frame in Maryann's question was the early 1800's; thus that is was I based my answer on. Pat in Va.

Maryann, Harrison Co., Ohio, according to the Ancestry Redbook was never part of Virginia. It was formed in 1813 from Jefferson and Tuscarawas Counties Ohio. Jefferson County was formed in 1797 from Washington County. Washington County was formed in 1788 from unorganized land. Tuscarawas County was formed in 1808 from Muskingum County which was formed in 1804 from Washington and Fairfield Counties. Fairfield County was formed in 1800 from Washington and Ross Counties. Ross County was formed in 1798 from Adams, Hamilton and Washington Counties. Adams County was formed in 1797 from Hamilton and Washington Counties. Hamilton County was formed in 1790. Therefore, if the census lists your ancestor as being born in Virginia, then he was not born in Harrison County Ohio. I found the following information also in the Ancestry Redbook on Ohio. This might be of interest to you in your search. Rene' Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, the French explorer, traveled through Ohio land in 1667 and is thought to have been the first white person to see the Ohio River. Eighty years later, in 1747, the Ohio Company of Virginia was organized to colonize the Ohio River Valley, leading to the creation of the Ohio Land Company two years later. Great Britain gained control of the region following the French and Indian War in 1763 but lost it again in 1779. The establishment of the Northwest Territory in 1787 marked the beginning of a steady stream of migration. Scots-Irish from Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania settled mainly in Marietta in Washington County. New Englanders and Revolutionary War Soldiers, most of them from Massachusetts and Connecticut arrived in that same area followed by Essex County, New Jersey, people, who settled in Cincinnati in an area called the Symmes Purchase. French immigrants settled in Gallipolis, Gallia County from 1790 though 1791. Additional Connecticut migrations occurred in 1796-97, settling in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Others from Connecticut and Vermont settled in what became Geauga County three years later. Clermont County was the new home of those from Maine in 1796, the same year that emigrants from Scotland arrived in Montgomery County. In 1796 the Refugee Tract was established in Columbus for Canadians who sympathized with the American Revolution. Three years later Ohio Territory was created, followed in 1800 by the first Ohio Territorial census, and the opening of the first land offices at Marietta, Steubenville, Chillicothe and Cincinnati. The territory became a state in 1803. The influx of new settlers continued, with Germans and Welsh from Pennsylvania, plus additional migrations from Ky and Va. Statehood was rapidly achieved in 1803. Three years later the United Society of Believers of Christ's Second Appearing (Shakers) migrated to Warren County. Germans settled in Brown and Tuscarawas counties from 1814 - 1824. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 was an opportunity for those in the northeastern United States to migrate to Ohio. The Mormons arrived in Ohio in 1831. English and Irish emigrated to Ohio for railroad construction employment in the 1840's. By 1860, Ohio's extensive railroad construction provided more miles of track than any other state. Also, according to Ann Fenley in The Ohio Open Records Law and Genealogy (Dayton, Ohio: Ohio Connection, 1989) the two types of death records known to be in existence before 1867 are records of cholera deaths, registered during some epidemics and veterans deaths. Hope this information will be helpful for you in your search. Good Luck. Pat in Va.
Sometime after 1854 my gr. grandfather disappeared. Without a trace. Along with him we lost track of most of his family. His name was Samuel Dixon, bn. about 1814 in VA. Samuel Dixon md. Delilah Figley 3 Jan 1839 in Harrison Co, OH. They had the following children Albert, Joseph. William, Elizabeth , Adam, John, Samuel and Thomas bn. 7/6/1854. All of their children were apparently born in OH with the possible exception of Albert and Thomas. Albert is reported in the 1850 Census as born in VA. (Is it now WV?) Where? Who knows? I don't and have found no record of a Samuel that even looked promising from Va. Since he so mysteriously disappeared about the time of his youngest son's birth - also reported as happening in VA, I have wondered about epidemics in the area during that time frame. Is there a record (other than the one listed at: <A HREF="http://people.delphi.com/pamyates/epidemic.htm">Epidemics</A> or http://people.delphi.com/pamyates/epidemic.htm ) that specifically lists the epidemics of Monroe, Harrison, Meigs and Washington Cos. OH or in WV or VA during this time frame? Since we have been unable to find a grave, or other record for him after his son's birth, this seems possible or even likely. We have the 1850 Census records of him and his family, but can find nothing in 1860. By 1870, his wife was living with her brother Robert Figley and his wife Canzayda Woodyard Figley in Meigs Co. His youngest son (at 16) was living with the Clines in Monroe Co. After the 1870 Census, even the Figley family disappears along with Delilah. However we have traced some of that family to the OK/MO area in later years - but no trace of Samuel. If you have any ideas or suggestions, Please, please help! We are desparate for some kind of information that will help us to break down this obstinate brick wall.
